The Baptism of the Lord— This Has to Do with Me How?

The Christmas Season officially comes to an end with the Baptism of the Lord. This year, since Christmas was on a Sunday, this lands on Monday. I do, however, think the Lord’s baptism merits comment. We transition back into

ordinary time until Ash Wednesday, which is late this year, March 1. The Lord’s baptism marks his transition into public ministry. We are done listening to readings about the wonder of the incarnation, and we now focus our attention to what Jesus actually did in leading him to the cross.

In his baptism, Jesus leads by example. He did not need to be baptized for his own sake. John’s baptism was one for people to show repentance. Jesus did not need to repent, since for him, there was nothing to repent from. The baptism we receive washes away the stain of Original Sin. Jesus was born without the stain of original sin; so his baptism was not for that purpose. Through our baptism, we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. While scripture states that the gift of the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove, my sense is that this was for our benefit. If we are to be followers of Jesus Christ, we must follow his example. He did not need baptism, but Jesus shows he is willing to do everything he requires us to do. He wants all his followers to be baptized. The benefit of us knowing the Holy Spirit descended on Jesus like a dove shows us the payoff of what will happen with us when we are baptized.

Jesus’ baptism was a transition for him into public ministry. That is the way our sacraments work for us. Each sacrament is a transition for us, a call into a deeper relationship with God and to serve God and God’s people. Now obviously, a newborn baby that was just baptized would not immediately afterward start preaching, teaching, and healing. That would be a silly notion. But still, there is a transition that happens: from being born of original sin to being welcomed into the Christian community. Parents and the Christian community, as a part of our baptismal call to preach and teach and heal, have a responsibility to form each baptized child in the faith. This formation is not just dumping the kid off here at school or on Wednesday nights for the Religious Education Program. If that is all we do for the child, we are doing a disservice to God, to the child’s development, and to our call to pass the faith on.

While teaching the lessons Jesus taught us, teaching the Bible, teaching the Catechism of the Catholic Church, and preparing the kids to receive each sacrament are all good things, if the kids do not have good examples to follow, it will be difficult for them to grasp and understand that all this we do here in Church actually matters, that it is a necessary part of their lives. Starting with his baptism, Jesus taught by example, doing all the things he calls us to do. If

parents really want their children to grow up to be good Christian adults, just like Jesus, they must teach by example. This means praying with them, taking them to Mass every Sunday, loving God and neighbor, and really show that the Catholic faith is an important gift to always hang on to.

What does Jesus’ baptism have to do with me? It means everything. This is where he got started. It is a reminder to all of us that we need to have that outward love and to serve the Lord, all the way until we eventually face our own personal cross. —TB
