This in-depth examination presents an insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, and often beleaguered artist. Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote to her parents over the years, many of them made public here for the first time. Narrated by musician Cat Power, this is an absorbing documentary that gives an intimate voice to one of the most important women in the rock music pantheon. Dir Amy Berg, USA. January 20, 21, 22, 23 LIKE CRAZY (M) 118min Hugely acclaimed and balancing its complex characters with honesty, humour and true emotional depth, this is a touching and unique take on friendship, freedom and mental illness. Beatrice is a motor-mouthed fantasist, a self-styled billionaire countess who likes to believe she’s on intimate terms with world leaders. Donatella is a tattooed introvert, a fragile young woman locked in her own mystery. A story of the unpredictable and moving friendship that develops between the two women as they flee the psychiatric clinic they are housed in, in search of love and happiness in the open-air nuthouse - the world of sane people. Dir Paulo Virzi, Italy. English subtitles. January 13, 14, 15, 20, 22 MAHANA (M) 103min 1960s, East Coast of New Zealand. Two Maori sheep-shearing families, the Mahanas and the Poatas, are longstanding enemies and commercial rivals. 14-year-old Simeon Mahana, the youngest son is in conflict with his traditionalist grandfather, Tamihana (Temuera Morrison). As Simeon unravels the truth behind the old family vendetta he risks not just his own future prospects but the cohesion of the entire tight-knit society. From the author of Whale Rider, the screenwriter of Master and Commander, and the producer and director of Once Were Warriors, comes a profound and enduring tale of rural family life. Dir Lee Tamahori, New Zealand. January 9, 13, 14, 15, 20, 22, 23 P.T.O. FOR SPECIALS & EVENTS » QUEEN OF KATWE (PG) 124min From director Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding) this jubilant film charts the rise of an unlikely chess prodigy from the Katwe slum in Uganda. Ten year old Phiona Mutesi (newcomer Madina Nalwanga) is introduced to chess when she wanders into a club that has been set up in Katwe by soccer-player-turned-mis- sionary Robert Katende, and it becomes immediately obvious that Phiona is a prodigy. Katende decides to mentor her, and enter her in chess competitions in Uganda and further afield. But resistance comes in the form of Phiona’s mother Harriet (Lupita Nyong’o), a cautious and fiercely protective woman. A triumphant feel-good film. Dir Mira Nair, USA. HAPPY NEW YEAR! RED DOG: TRUE BLUE (PG) 89min Following 2011’s much loved Red Dog, a hoard of home-grown talent gathers to tell the back-story of one of Australia’s most lovable canines. It shows the early events leading up to Red Dog’s discovery on the road to Dampier, and his ultimate rise from ordinary dog to Australian legend. When eleven year old Mick (Levi Miller) is shipped off to his grandfather’s (Bryan Brown) cattle station in the remote Pilbara region of WA, he prepares himself for a life of dull hardship, but instead finds myth, adventure and friendship with a scrappy, unique dog that will change his life forever. A classic boy-and-his-dog tale with a big heart and bundles of charm. Dir Kriv Stenders, Australia. January 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 15, 16 FESTIVAL EXPRESS (M, 2003) 90min In 1970 a train journeyed across Canada carrying some of the greatest rock bands of all time. Janis Joplin, The Band, The Grateful Dead, Buddy Guy and others lived (and partied) for five days, giving concerts where and when they stopped. The train was called the Festival Express. Planned as a festival with a difference – it would be portable – the event had an aura of magic; a large number of the performers signed on despite being offered fees substantially below their going rate. The musicians thought the train ride sounded like the party to end parties. Wildly and joyously entertaining, with some great footage of Janis Joplin. Dir Bob Smeaton, USA/Canada.
