January Guest Speaker: Gail Garber

We’ll start 2009 on the right foot with New Mexico quilter and hawk rescue worker, Gail Garber.

Ms. Garber is an internationally recognized contemporary quilt artist. She is a published author, lecturer, workshop leader and avid quilt designer; best known for her colorful free form flying geese and medallion style quilts and wall hangings. The Thursday, January 8th lecture will be How Do I Get There: Every Quilter’s Journey. Gail describes the lecture this way: “We all have to start somewhere! This light and lively trunk show shares both triumphs and tragedies learned in the natural growth process of quiltmaking.”

Gail’s workshops are a great hit wherever she goes to lecture. We’ve chosen two special workshops for her visit here:

Sensational Stars (Friday) Explore the design process used to create one-of-a-kind, circular stars. Students will learn drafting, color

selection, and stitching techniques as they create their own original design star. The Goose Is Loose! Piecing Free-Form Shapes (Saturday) Learn the drafting and piecing techniques for flying geese in the round, loose curves, or swirls. They can be simply designed and easily stitched using paper piecing techniques. Both workshops will have design

process instruction as well as creating and stitching original designs which have the possibility of becoming wall hangings or jacket panels. The sky is the limit. Patterns ($7.00) and fabric kits ($35.00) are optional. Check her out her website at www.gailgarberdesigns.com for a peek at what’s in store!

Why not start the new year by learning a new technique, shared with fellow quilting friends?

Guild AwardsEach year, the Quilter’s Guild of Dallas honors four special members who have gone “above and beyond” during their

years of service to the Guild. This year, President Marcia Hampton announced the following award recipients:

Founders AwardRichard Larson

Richard joined the Dallas guild in 2001. He was Quilt Celebration chair for 2007 and 2008. Richard’s contributions to the guild have been many and varied. He has most willingly given of his time over the years. Not only has he served in many official roles with the guild but he offers his shop as a meeting location for the board meetings, serves as a central drop off location for deliveries from vendors and guild members, and he also orders fabric and supplies for guild projects. Currently his job for Quilt Celebration 2009 is entries chair.

Richard enjoys piecing and designing his own quilts. His mom, Joyce Larson, told us that he has been working on a hand appliqué piece for about 3 years now.

Richard was born at Chanute Air Force base in Rantoule, Illinois. Richard and his family moved to Texas when he was 6 years old, and he came to Dallas right after high school. He has been involved in sewing and designing for many years. He began sewing for his family at the age of six. During his junior and high school years, he earned money for college by making prom wear for the local school kids. Richard graduated from Wade’s Fashion Merchandising College, earning a degree in Fashion Design and Textiles. In the early 70’s and 80’s, he worked in two different design houses in Dallas where he designed women’s After Five apparel.

With the encouragement of his mother, Richard has been quilting professionally since 1998 when he purchased a Gammill long-arm quilting machine and has been hooked ever since. He is the owner of Quilting Design Studio in Plano and is a respected long-arm quilter.

Silver Thimble Award RecipientsJoy Elam

Joy has been a member of the guild since 1993 and a consistent volunteer. She is a member of the Nimble Thimbles and Going to Pieces friendship groups, the Mesquite guild, and an informal group that meets on Thursday morning just because they want to. Joy and husband Frank have helped with Quilt Celebration for many years hanging quilts.

Joy received the Yellow Rose award in 2000 and has volunteered in membership, Covers for Kids, stocking project, admissions, miniature quilt auction, quilt angel, volunteer coordinator, staff lounge, vendor runner, set up/take down and show office.

According to her friends, Joy does beautiful appliqué work.

She worked for Anheuser-Busch for 30 years before retiring. She then worked at Southwest Airlines for 3 years and retired again. Joy and Frank have been married for many years and have 2 children - daughter Elizabeth and son Frank.Bili Grozier

Bilidene - who goes by “Bili,” has been a member of the guild since 1990. She has performed a variety of duties for the show. As chairman for Advance Ticket Sales and Bus Tour coordinator, she boosted ticket sales considerably by faithfully going to area quilt shops every week and making sure they were fully supplied with tickets, picking up the sales money and keeping detailed records.. This year she is co-chair for the judges committee, a role she has performed many times in the past. Bili has also co-chaired the Entries Committee.

For Community Service, she has participated in Covers for Kids workshops and made stocking for the

Stocking Project. She was a member for a long time of the Sew What’s friendship group. She likes to hand quilt, but recently bought a new sewing machine for piecing.

Bili stepped up early in the Quilt Mania process to offer her assistance. She served as the tour bus leader for the two quilt crawls during Quilt Mania I and is repeating her hostessing skills during the three quilt crawls for Quilt Mania II. Said Quilt Mania organizer, Dr. Marian Ann Montgomery, “Her professionalism, her calm demeanor in the middle of chaos, her can-do attitude and overall pleasant personality have made her an essential member of the team.”

Bili was instrumental in getting the Terrell quilt show up and running and served as Show Chairman for several years.

Bili is from Carrollton, TX. She and husband Joe have lived in many places over the years, and currently live in Terrell, Texas. They were married in 1959 and have 2 daughters, Kelly and Leann, and 5 grandchildren; 2 boys and 3 girls. She attended East Texas State Teachers College, currently known as Texas A&M - Commerce.

Bili is one of those people that quietly goes about getting her job done without fanfare and always works in an efficient manner. Terry Reese

Terry has been a member of the guild since 1993, having joined at Quilt Celebration. Terry has served in many positions with the guild, most notably as vendor committee chair for several years. After passing on the reins for that duty, she took over as staff lounge committee chair. This year, she will continue as part of the staff lounge team, feeding hungry show volunteers and vendors. She is also serving on the set up committee.

Programs & Workshops: What’s Coming to a Guild Meeting Near YOU!Marilyn Dickson Vice President, Programs & Workshops

In February, we’ll welcome quilter John Flynn. Many of you will recognize John from his frequent visits to judge at Quilt Celebration, or his booth at many quilt shows, demonstrating the Flynn Quilt Frame system.

Mr. Flynn didn’t start out as a quilter. He began his career as an engineer who built bridges. His curiosity was sparked by watching his wife, Brooke, quilt. He decided to try his hand at quilting and the rest is...well, you know. Besides creating his own breath-taking quilts, John also shares his talents with others as a world renowned teacher. After several years of quilting, John sold his construction company and began Flynn’s Quilt Frame Company, selling not only frames that John designed, but also John’s books, templates, and template making supplies.

His lecture for our Guild is “The Perfect Cover,” Says John, “My son’s buddy thinks I’m really a secret agent and that traveling as a “quilt teacher” is my cover.” Hear stories “from the road” and slides of quilts and quilters from all over the world.

The Friday workshop will be

“Quilting at Windmills,” a workshop of triangle spirals that is graphic and dramatic. (see photo to left)

The Saturday class will be “Tempestad Perfecta,” an exciting variation of the classic pattern, Storm at Sea. While most Storm at Sea quilts utilize a blue and white color scheme, the pattern takes on a whole new spin when done in dramatic vibrant colors. All the cuts and seams are done in a straight line but the overall effect is one of curves. (see photo to right)

Don’t forget – if you pay for the workshop at least 30 days in advance, you’ll $AVE money!

Help Wanted: Guild Store ManagerHave you often thought you’d like to run a store? Were you once that over-achieving Girl Scout who led her troop

in cookie sales? Or have you secretly wanted to help pick out the items that the Guild sells at meetings and at Quilt Celebration?

After several seasons as Guild Store Manager, Theresa Cunningham will be stepping down from that position after Quilt Celebration 2009. We are looking for someone to take over the reins and this is really the perfect time for the right person to try the job on for size.

Most of the merchandise for sales at Quilt Celebration (the really big money-maker event) is already ordered. Here is an opportunity to work the store at the meetings, meet more new and interesting people and work off and on with Theresa through Quilt Celebration 2009 to then take over fully when the show is over.

Here’s what Theresa, the current store manager had to say: “I originally volunteered shortly after joining the Guild, and am ready to move on to a new volunteer challenge. I have enjoyed the getting to “shop” and scout out new items, bringing a variety of merchandise to the Guild Store.” It’s a great way to meet people and help market the Guild.

Interested? Think about it and contact Vice President for Ways & Means, Mary Jane Burton via email with questions or for further details:

January Guild Store Shopping Alert:You will notice that the person working the store in January has shorter

hair, looks like they’d rather be holding fishing tackle than that show t-shirt, and doesn’t really resemble Theresa, our regular store manager at all!

That’s because it ISN’T Theresa... She is currently in Michigan helping care for an uncle who is seriously ill. Therefore, Theresa’s husband Ed has volunteered to take her place for the evening.

If you’ve ever been to a meeting when Ed is minding the store, you know he is very good at giving you that “Pretty please with sugar on top???” sales face. So...

Please drop by the Guild Store area, thank Ed for volunteering to help, and SHOP ‘TIL YOU DROP!

(Ed really would love to sell out and not have a thing to carry home... )

New Year: Starting it Right Bonnie McElearney Mary Lord Co-Chairs, Miniature Quilt Auction

(The following was written by Bonnie)If you are like me, you spend some

time reflecting at the end of the year about what you accomplished. Some years I feel more productive and satisfied than others and that usually has to do with how I started the year.

Sometimes I make new years’ resolutions that go off to the wayside, usually because I am unable to see tangible results or the fruits of my labors. So last year, I decided to make resolutions that will give me bang for my buck and things I can look at on New Year’s Eve and feel good about my accomplishments.

Take a look at the list I’ve put together for myself---please feel free to adopt or plagiarize. I guarantee if you adopt one or two or more of these you will deserve that extra glass of champagne or at least a few more kudos from fellow guild members. (Maybe you can help me add to my list.)

At the January meeting, put myself down to Volunteer eight hours at the Quilt show.Make a mini-quilt for the auction to benefit the Ronald McDonald House.Donate some fabric for Covers for Kids.Come early to one guild meeting and make a new friend.Sign up for one workshop.Hold up my hand to assist the VP for Programs and Workshops with whatever is needed.

Security at Quilt CelebrationDebbie Tribble, Security Chairman

Ladies and Gentlemen it’s that time again! Time that we are turning our thoughts towards our Quilt Celebration. We are all looking forward to a fantastic show this year. Your show committee has been hard at work planning and implementing for many months. This year I am asking for you, our members, to keep your eyes open hoping to ensure that our vendors don’t become victim to shoplifters. Those of you working the show please be sure to utilize our member services. You can check your personal items in the special member’s area to ensure you don’t lose any of your belongings. We are taking extra measures this year to ensure a successful and safe Quilt Celebration and appreciate your cooperation.

Quilt Celebration 2009Val Hubbard, Vice President - Show/Chairman of Quilt Celebration 2009

We look at the calendar and think, “Well, Thanksgiving is over, Christmas is coming, and soon we will be looking at New Years.” (Is it a long weekend for you?). What have I done this past year; what am I going to do in 2009? Many of us know what we will be doing from March 13 – 15 (and many days before); We will be at the 28th Annual Quilt Celebration. and I sure hope that is on your agenda too. But before that there is so much to do. Do you have your quilt entry completed (deadline January 8, 2009)? Have you thought about volunteering at the show or on any one of the committees that need help before the show? Now is the time to start planning. Remember we need all of you to make the show a great success.
