Dear Members,

It has been a rewarding and inspiring fall at the

MJCC. Our 2015 Jewish Literary and Cultural Arts

Festival is complete, and it was a huge success. The

Lemsky Endowment Fund at the Memphis Jewish

Federation funded a visit from

our first Israeli in Residence,

Shirel Horovitz, an artist whose

community workshops resulted in

an enlightening art installation in

the Shainberg Gallery in November.

As we move into the secular

New Year, there will be very

exciting programs happening at

the MJCC. Our third annual Health and Wellness

Expo will be on Jan 17. This year’s keynote presenter

is Mindy Mylrea, fitness guru and creator of Gliding

Discs, Tabata Bootcamp, and more. Mindy will

speak about her extensive experience in health and

wellness, and we are excited to welcome her as a

fitness teacher throughout the Expo, leading some of

her famous classes. You won't want to miss Mindy or

the assortment of vendors and sponsors of this year’s

Expo. You can find more information on page 24.

The next visitor in our Israeli in Residence series

will be scholar Abraham Silver. Abraham will be with

us to explore the Arab-Israeli conflict, Jewish Identity,

and more. He will also be visiting local synagogues

and organizations for smaller engagements

while he is in town. This is the second part in our

Israeli in Residence series, made possible by the

Lemsky Endowment Fund at the Memphis Jewish

Federation. See details of his events on page 14.

The 2016 Morris and Mollye Fogelman Film Festival

will kick off on Feb 17 and you can learn more about

it on page 13. This is our third year hosting the film

festival, and it's getting bigger each

time. We can't wait for you to see

what we have in store this year.

The Me and My Guy Sweetheart

Dance is back by popular

demand for your 4–9-year-old

girl and her special guy. More

information on page 5.

The Camp Carnival on March 6 will start the

camp season with a bang. Come sign up for

camp, meet new and returning staff, and enjoy

a moon bounce, popcorn, and face painting.

Be on the lookout for the 2016 camp brochure,

reaching your mailboxes in early February.

Whether you've been with us for years, or

you just joined, I'm glad you're a member of the

MJCC. We have a special community, and it's

because of people like you. Please let me know

if you have any questions or concerns. I can

be reached at [email protected].

Jin and John PowellDec 8–Jan 22A trained figurative artist, Jin Powell's work integrates transitional techniques with boundless modern thought in a mixed–media format. Each work projects the true feminine experience with elegance, a beauty that seems illusory, a surreal emotion. Each work is imbued with a sense of movement, capturing the heart with a smile.

As a sculptor, John Powell's art is a mirror of his thoughts – a reflection and outward manifestation of my physical and psychological journey. "Whether I'm working with wood, metals, or stone, and regardless of the nature of the experience , I end with something of beauty that captures a part of my being – my unpredictable life."

Tennessee Craft-SouthwestOpening Reception Feb 7 from 1–3pmIn the Gallery Feb 7–28Tennessee Craft-Southwest (formerly known as MACA, Memphis Association of Craft Artists) is a chapter of Tennessee Craft, a Statewide organization to promote fine craft and support craft artists in Tennessee.

Participating artists collaborate with a fellow artist who works in a different media and together they submit a piece for the show. In addition to the collaborative piece, each artist may submit work of their own.

Thanks to the generosity of the Lemsky Endowment Fund at the Memphis Jewish Federation, the MJCC will be hosting Israeli Scholar in Residence, Abraham Silver, and will offer his programs to the community at no charge.

After receiving a B.A. in History and Philosophy from SUNY Binghamton, Abraham moved to Kibbutz Ketura, a socialist pioneering settlement in Israel’s Negev desert, where he spent nineteen years as a date farmer.

Abraham received his army training as a Paratrooper and he was a reservist in the IDF. He is a licensed tour guide and senior Jewish/Israel educator. He has devoted the last twenty–four years to creating and implementing innovative informal Jewish and Israel education.

In his role as educator, he has helped people of all ages and backgrounds understand their connection to the land of Israel and the Jewish people. He is currently Educational Director of Israel Interactive, providing educators with inventive, attractive, DVD– and Internet–based instructional programs for Israel education.

He is co–author of the books Living the Dream: Israel at 50 and Israel at 60: People, Places and History, a three–volume set of DVDs. Abraham and his wife Elissa live in Tel Aviv with their two eight–year–old daughters, Shiri and Libi.

While he's here, Abraham will be leading various events for the Memphis Jewish community. Keep reading for information about the main ones that will be held at the MJCC.

The Arab-Israeli Conflict: A Historical PerspectiveWed, Jan 27 at 7pm We will discuss one of the most difficult problems on the world stage. Instead of disappearing as other international events wax and wane, the conflict seems to morph and mold itself according to each new global issue. We will gain a deeper perspective into the generations-long conflict, try to understand how the people involved have felt, and challenge ourselves on ways to move forward.

J-Ed Series with Israeli Scholar in Residence State vs Country: What does it mean that Israel is a Jewish state?Tue, Feb 2 at 7pmOn May 14th, 1948 in a small hall in the Tel Aviv Art Museum, David Ben Gurion created something that had not existed in almost two thousand years, an independent Jewish Commonwealth. Yet, as he read the Declaration of Independence, he did not declare “the State of Israel” but instead declared “a Jewish State in the Land of Israel.” We will explore the issues surrounding this event. What is the difference between the two? How did it determine the makeup of Israeli Democracy? How is it relevant today?

Nosh and Learn Breakfast with Abraham Silver: The Fight for Al Aksa MosqueThu, Feb 4 at 7:30amLast chance to come learn with Abraham Silver and enjoy a bagel with schmear.

Young Palestinians are willing to attack Israelis in the streets even though there is a good chance they will be killed. We will explore what is going on in Israel today. How did we get to this point? What is the feeling on the Palestinian street? What is the feeling on the Israeli street? What are the narratives given by both sides, including Abbas' incitement and Netanyahu's remarks about the Mufti. How can we move forward from these events? Is education towards tolerance and acceptance possible? We will explore all these concepts in a discussion/forum.

Spring into Jewish LearningA Jewish Lens on Romantic LoveAges 18 + A four-week course exploring the Jewish perspective

on romantic love, taught by Director of Jewish

Innovation & Engagement, Heather Kufert. Romantic

love is made up of so many different emotions.

In this class, we explore how participants look

at and consider romantic love through cartoons

and visual arts. We will then turn to the Jewish

wedding ceremony itself to understand the ways

in which both the indescribable highs of romantic

love and the more mundane commitments of

sustained, enduring love are present in this Jewish

ceremonial celebration. Join us again in the fall for

another class focusing on a different type of love.

First–time buyers get 3 one-hour sessions for just $99!

Wellness Staff Spotlight: Mandy Kelley, Fitness ManagerI started my journey at the MJCC over three years ago as I began my internship for a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Science, which I recently completed at the University of Memphis.

Conquering my own fitness issues has helped me to understand my own clients' struggles.

My passion for fitness and helping our members has grown stronger throughout the years I have worked at the MJCC. I currently teach several classes at the center and have even acquired

some new nicknames like “No Mercy Mandy!”

Classes I currently teach at the J range from Spin and Tabata to an assortment of HIIT classes. You may also find me teaching your children in our FitRanX classes. My hope is that the kids will learn to love exercise and will also learn the correct posture to execute the exercises.

It has been a dream come true for me to foster my passion for fitness at the Memphis Jewish Community Center. I absolutely love what I do and love the feeling of helping people become healthier and develop better habits as a lifestyle. No matter what your fitness goals are, I can help you reach them. My door is always open, and I would love the opportunity to meet and talk with you.

Through specific research–based curriculum, challengers will engage in new exercises each session that help them learn to enjoy fitness, test their limits, and “level up!” Each participant is allowed to test to level up after 12 workouts, and is invited to continue in classes for free after testing to the black band level.

Also, parents can join their young challengers for our Sunday workouts, helping further the commitment to setting healthy lifelong fitness goals.
