1 Feliz Año Nuevo Bonne Année Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils Welcome back. I do hope you have enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I also hope you have all enjoyed the range of Christmas experiences which were provided. I am very grateful to the entire team and the Friends Association for a most memorable end of the year. It seems a long time ago since the Christmas Tree Assembly which launched Christmas for our children. I certainly hope we created the magic of Christmas for them all. Christmas time as a primary child is unique and I’ve always wanted it to be special in the children’s hearts and memories, a gift they will wish to pass on to the next generation. Thank you all for your encouragement and engagement with the array of seasonal activities. Thank you for all your support and goodwill messages to the team. The cards and gifts are not expected but as always you are so generous and kind. Most of all thank you for your understanding and patience, hopefully safe in the knowledge that the only thing we all want is the best for your children. We look forward to an exciting 2016. Schools are being challenged more than ever to reach an ever higher bar. At times this is stressful and we must do all we can to ensure that the stress isn’t felt by the children. But nor should we underestimate them. When we witnessed the performance of Cats I was reminded once again, that what can seem a dream can become reality. In the Minster 200 pupils organised and conducted themselves with absolute professionalism and coordination and without a rehearsal. Together we shall achieve what is required of us. As is tradition, we shall be hosting our own International Festival in February and details will be announced in the next newsletter. Congratulations to the pupils for an amazing fund raising total of £4659.52 This is our highest on record topping the 2014 total. It is recognition of the children’s generosity and ingenuity. It is also clearly a reflection of the support and encouragement that Parents/Carers and staff have given to pupils. Each class made representations to the Pupil Council which decided on the charities to receive donations. Each will receive £629.93 and they are as follows:

As is so often the case, I feel very proud of the children of Molescroft Primary School and I am sure you will join me in giving them hearty congratulations for the achievement and decisions made.

5 meals for a fiver!Winter Warmer Special Offer

For one week only Crofty’s Restaurant is offering a special Winter Warmer Deal. As parent/carers are aware, there is already a special deal of £9.20 for five meals taken in any one week. This is a saving of £2.30 on the week. On Monday 11th January however for one week only, pupils taking a meal every day up to Friday 15th January

will only be charged £5 for 5 dinners. This is a saving of £6.50 and is equivalent to £1 per dinner. Don’t forget parent/carers and grandparents can join us for dinner any day (except Christmas Dinner and on Sporting Tournament Days) by phoning school before 10 am to book a meal. Places are limited and booking can be made up to a week in advance. Adult meals are £3.30. In addition when there is a four day week as is the case in the first week back, the charge will be only £6.90 for four days rather than the £9.20 due.

We believe our school meals are among the best in the country.

R KEEPING SAFE WEEKA timely reminder

Every January in class and in assembly we focus on safety. This year we are looking again at hidden dangers encompassing the dangers on line through computer and phone. Cyber bullying and manipulation are easy traps for pupils to fall into at either end of the scale. It is so easy to underestimate the dangers that present themselves to children through on line contact and it may shock parents to know that there have been examples of pupils at this school being contacted by unknown individuals in their home and cases of cyber bullying.

Now would be a good time to look at the advice which our website links to; see the home page. It is so easy to presume all is well and protected when the reality is not.

POPPY APPEALRemembrance Gives HopeThe Royal British Legion have asked me to thank the children for the £108.41 collected through the Poppy Appeal at school.

STARTING SCHOOL IN 2016?The Application Window is closing

Do you have a child aged 3 to 4 years old? Was your child born between September 1, 2011 and August 31, 2012? If so, then he/she should start school in September 2016. You can apply for a school place online NOW using the electronic form on the council’s website:www.eastriding.gov.uk or you can get an application form from the Admissions Team. Application forms are available now. The deadline for receiving applications is January 15th 2016. You should make sure that you complete and return an application form online or a paper form to the Admissions Team at County Hall, Beverley by that date. If you have any  ques>ons  please  contact  your  local  school  or  East  Riding  of  Yorkshire  Council:  Admissions  Team  –  telephone  (01482)  392100

SOUP KITCHEN CONTINUES

From Wednesday 6th January we welcome the return of the morning soup kitchen.

Children will be selling the homemade vegetable soup every morning break from the Friends’ Garden. 30p per cup.

FAIRTRADE FRIDAY

On Fridays however we shall be selling Fairtrade Hot Chocolate at the same price in the same place. This is another suggestion from the Pupil Council.

R SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANTThe following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows. The  school  will  only  close  without  prior  no8ce  as  a  last  resort.    The  Head  Teacher  or  his  representa8ve  will  remain  on  site  un8l  the  last  child  is  collected.

Policy in Practice

What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions

It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and

safety risk. This is done by the Chair of Governors and the local radio stations will be informed. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff

In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be

able to arrive before the normal start of school time. In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for day pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will contact Radio Humberside and Viking Radio to ask them to broadcast the information.

PARENTS WILL BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.

Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The  school  will  only  close  without  prior  no8ce  as  a  last  resort.    The  Head  Teacher  or  his  representa8ve  will  remain  on  site  un8l  the  last  child  is  collected.

R A DIRECT APPEAL TO THE PARENTS/CARERS OF MOLESCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL FROM THE EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE COUNCIL

The Local Authority has sent the following text and requested that I include it in this newsletter. I urge all parents/carers and staff to read it very carefully. This is an appeal for help from East Riding of Yorkshire Council Environmental Enforcement Team. Concerns have been raised with the Enforcement Team regarding parking on the streets around Molescroft School, particularly during drop off and pick up times.

We are increasing concerned about not only the safety of children but the needs of our local residents and effect this inconsiderate parking is having on their daily lives.

It has been reported that

- Cars are being parked too close to the school endangering children

- Cars are parking on pavements. This causes an obstruction and makes it very difficult for pedestrians, particularly the elderly and people with young children and pushchairs

- People park over residents driveways – this is unfair and inconsiderate

- Cars are being parked on verges causing damage. Damaging verges in this way is illegal. Grass verges are not designed to cope with vehicles overrunning and parking on them. During winter months the verges are often soft and soon become rutted and unsightly

Parking restrictions around a school are vital. They are there to ensure your child arrives safely at school. Current national statistics by the group “Road Safety Analysis” show that with a 500 meter radius of a school, nearly 1,200 children are injured by motorists every month in the UK. This is a shocking figure. Enough children were injured every two years to fill the KC Stadium in Hull. Is this the price we want to pay to avoid been 5 minutes late?

Local Authorities believe this is too higher price to pay and try and reduce this human cost by introducing speed restrictions and keep stationary traffic away from school entrances. These steps allow motorist to see children well in advance and at a speed were they can react quickly and safely. Also children have a clear view of the traffic and have a safer area to cross the road if necessary. Any vehicle stopped in these areas nullifies the efforts of the Authority and places all children entering or leaving the school at risk of becoming another name to be added to the list of 1,200 children injured every month.

So the next time you park or speed near a school, just ask yourself “am I endangering someone else’s child to get my child safely to school?” and “is 1,200 injuries per month a price you’re willing to pay?”

School Meals are Excellent Value.

Adult Guests for dinner.I am delighted that our meal service is so popular with not only our pupils but also with adult guests. There is however a limit to capacity for visitors. If you intend to come to school to have lunch, please do not promise your child that you are coming unless you have a definite booking reserved. We can take bookings up to a week in advance until capacity is reached. I thank you for your understanding.PUPIL DINNERS MUST BE PREPAID, no more than £2.30 will be accepted in arrears. Money must be sent to the classroom in a labelled envelope. PLEASE DO NOT SEND LOOSE MONEY. Each room has a post box through which letters and money (providing it is in a labelled sealed envelope) can be sent to the school office.

Meals are advertised on the website and there is always the salad with two wraps option.

Children can self serve salad, vegetables and fruit salad and can have second portions.

* Please note; there are occasions e.g at Christmas, during the show week, and on sporting tournament days when it is not possible to accommodate extra adult guests at lunchtime. The same applies on the first week in September when the priority is to reestablish systems for our pupils particularly our new starters.

RSPB Big Garden Bird Watch During January we will be joining in the Big Schools’ Bird Watch and getting closer to nature. Why not join us Join us and help support the RSBP by taking part in The Big Garden Bird Watch and contribute to the world’s largest wildlife survey! Full details can be found on the RSBP website.

Make your own bird cake for the garden. These bird feeders not only attract birds to your garden but they’re fun to make. These are a great way of feeding birds throughout the winter when bugs and berries are scarce. What you need: (makes several) •5 digestive biscuits

•1 cup bird seeds or peanuts

•Half a pack of lard

•Pine cones (optional)

•String (optional)

How to make the bird cakes There are several ways to make these cakes. If you’d like to hang them from a tree, you need to form the cakes around knotted string or pine cones.

To make the bird cake mixture •Crush the biscuits in a mixing bowl

using the back of a wooden spoon – and set aside.

•Do the same with the seeds or peanuts.

•Cut the lard into small pieces.

•Mix the biscuits, seeds or peanuts and the lard together in the bowl.

Take handfuls of the mixture and form into small cake shapes with your fingers. Or pack around the pine cones or string.

Put them in the fridge to harden, then place outside ready for the birds.
