MOLESCROFT PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 7th January 2020 Volume 19 Issue 5 £5391.43 to support children’s charities Dear Parents, Carers, Governors, Friends, Staff and Pupils Welcome back. I do hope you have enjoyed a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I also hope you have all enjoyed the range of Christmas experiences which were provided. I am very grateful to the entire team and the Friends Association for a most memorable end of the year. It seems a long time ago since the Christmas Tree Assembly which launched Christmas for our children. I certainly hope we created the magic of Christmas for them all. Christmas time as a primary child is unique and I’ve always wanted it to be special in the children’s hearts and memories, a gift they will wish to pass on to the next generation. Thank you all for your encouragement and engagement with the array of seasonal activities. Thank you for all your support and goodwill messages to the team. The cards and gifts are not expected but as always you are so generous and kind. Most of all thank you for your understanding and patience, hopefully safe in the knowledge that the only thing we all want is the best for your children. We look forward to an exciting 2020. As is tradition, we shall be hosting our own International Festival in February and details will be announced in an early February newsletter. Please do note however that Thursday 13th February 2020 is the big International Festival night; a date for your diary. The final event of 2019 was our Grand Assembly Party at which we announced the Charity Fundraising total and the children’s chosen charities. Congratulations to the pupils for an amazing fund raising total of £5391.43, £304.01 more than last year’s record, and therefore a new record. It is an astonishing total particularly when finances are so tight. It is recognition of the children’s generosity and ingenuity, but it is also clearly a reflection of the generosity of the children’s families and the support and encouragement that Parents/Carers and stahave given to pupils. The pupils raised the money and through their class councils made representations for the Pupil Council. The charities they have chosen to support are: RSPCA, Children in Need, Save the Children, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Age UK, Olivia’s Vision, Cancer Research. I think they are an excellent choice, diverse and wide reaching for causes here at home and internationally. A true reflection of their community spirit. As always we give an amount to Beverley Minster which pays for their work in the community, this is £330. Each of the chosen charities will receive £723.06. As is so often the case, I feel very proud of the children of Molescroft Primary School and I am sure you will join me in giving them hearty congratulations for the achievement and decisions made. So onwards and upwards we head into another exciting year and decade and Molescroft Primary School will endeavour to provide some exciting moments and surprises for all our families.

R GOVERNOR REPORT: Brian StillingsAlthough no longer required, the Governing Body has for years continued to publish an Annual Report. In 2020 this report is being published in “bite sized” chunks in the Monthly Newsletter. This month Brian Stillings has a report on the development of Modern Foreign Languages. Modern foreign languages continues to have a high priority in the school. Leaders and teachers make sure that pupils from the start of school either learn French or Spanish. Leaders explained that the statutory requirements in the National Curriculum for the teaching of languages is to cover the following: Teaching may be of any modern or ancient foreign language and should focus on enabling pupils to make substantial progress in one language. The teaching should provide an appropriate balance of spoken and written language and should lay the foundations for further foreign language teaching at key stage 3. It should enable pupils to understand and communicate ideas, facts and feelings in speech and writing, focused on familiar and routine matters, using their knowledge of phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary.

The requirement is for a language to be learnt from Key stage 2 (Years 3 to Year 6). Leaders and teachers exceed this requirement by teaching languages to pupils at Molescroft from the very start of school.

The languages leader (Mrs Henderson-Tucker) has worked with the Local Authority to train teachers across the county to improve teaching of languages. Many schools are at different stages of teaching pupils an additional language. Mrs Henderson-Tucker has used her expertise to set up a website which supports teachers with resources and ideas to teach French and Spanish. Mrs Henderson-Tucker has reported that the feedback from the training events has been very popular. The training has helped schools to improve their language provision.

SNOW POLICY: IMPORTANT The following is taken from the school’s Safeguarding Policy and should prepare parents/carers for what to expect when it snows. The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

Policy in Practice What the school does to assist in the event of icy weather conditions. It is not practical to grit the entire site, but as part of the gritting policy, safe routes round the site and across the South Playground have been identified and will be gritted before giving access to the site, thereby minimising the risks to children parents and visitors. The car park will also be gritted.

Children are not allowed to make slides on the playgrounds. Playgrounds are gritted if practical before 8:30am and when not, by morning break. At playtimes a decision as to whether children are to be allowed outside will be made by the senior teacher on duty in conjunction with a member of the Senior Management Team.

Children may not throw snowballs on the playgrounds. However if the field is covered by thick snow pupils may be allowed to play on the field in the snow, make snowman and throw snowballs. Those not wishing to throw snow (or indeed be hit by snowballs) should stay on the playgrounds. The school believes that playing in and throwing snow is part of a child’s life experiences.

In extreme cases the Headteacher may decide that there is no option but to close the school if there is presented a severe health and safety risk. This done, the Chair of

Governors will be informed and parents via text message. A severe Health and Safety Risk would be presented if insufficient staff could reach the school or indeed the health and safety of staff meant that they should leave early. Due to the location of the school it is expected that the school will be able to remain open. Closing a school at short notice including closing mid way through a day poses considerable difficulties for parents and will only be taken as a very last resort.

A complete heating failure in the winter and/or a loss of the water supply would however result in the school having to close.

Good communication is essential. Parents receive a copy of specific instructions during the autumn and winter months via the monthly newsletters and the website. Children have the processes explained to them in the classroom. It is expected that parents adhere to these instructions and pass all relevant information to friends and relatives who may also come to school to bring and fetch children. Parents/Carers are asked to be responsible and plan more time for their journey, suitable footwear for having to walk further, wrapping up to keep warm etc....Parents should not expect to be able to park close to the school at these times! Parents and visitors are expected to use the gritted paths rather than walk across the snow and ice.

Snow Policy and Procedures - information for teaching and support staff In the event of disruption caused by heavy snow the prime concern of the school must always be the safety of the pupils and staff.

It is expected that all staff will make every reasonable effort to undertake the journey to school. It is appreciated that the journey may take longer than normal and therefore some staff may not be able to arrive before the normal start of school time.

In the event of severe weather, a decision to close the school for pupils will be made by 7am. The Head Teacher will make arrangements for PARENTS TO BE INFORMED BY TEXT IF THE SCHOOL IS TO CLOSE.

Updates will be posted on the Twitter section of the school’s website. www.molescroftprimary.net

In the event of the normal timetable being suspended, a programme of activities will be organised for pupils who arrive at school. Teachers and Teaching Assistants will be delegated to supervise these activities.

Rather than a full closure it is more likely that the school will remain open on a reduced capacity. In such an event, parents/carers will be asked if it is possible to make alternative arrangements for pupils. Where this is not possible the school will remain open for those who need to come to school or for those who cannot go home in the case of an unexpected early closure. As the number pupils remaining decreases, they will be moved to other classes or the hall.

The school will only close without prior notice as a last resort. The Head Teacher or his representative will remain on site until the last child is collected.

R KEVIN’S DIARY It’s a school dog’s Life

Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful festive break. I had a lovely time with my family going on lots of long walks and playing in the park. I met a few of you at the park and you helped throw my ball for me to chase.

I was spoilt at Christmas and got lots of new toys. I got a new toy to play with when out for a walk/run and got some toys to keep me entertained whilst in Mrs. Jameson’s office.

This year I got used to all the festivities and learnt that I shouldn’t steal baubles off the Christmas tree. I enjoyed Christmas day as I got some turkey and some sausages in my lunch as a treat.

I am looking forward to seeing you all and hope you all have a fantastic start to the year.

Even Kev’ enjoys his Christmas Dinner and has a Christmas Jumper.

On Tuesday 3rd December twelve children from years 3 to 6 took part in the annual swimming tournament held at Beverley Leisure Centre. There were 7 schools competing in the tournament from across the East Riding including Keldmarsh, Walkington, Minster, Cherry Burton, St Nicholas and St Johns.

Henry K-H and Edward D started off the morning’s events with 1 length backstroke which they both swam with confidence. Both boys made it to the final of this event and earned well-respected 6th and 7th places. Following the fantastic swims from the boys, it was the girls backstroke event. Florence K and Jessica M stormed through their heats, both earning a place in the final. The final was a tough one and with a nail-biting finish, Jessica touched into 1st place earning herself our first medal of the tournament in a time of 19.46 seconds. Jessica was followed closely by Florence who finished in a fantastic 5th place.

Ben T and Edgar S were next, competing in the 1 length breaststroke event. They both swam with determination and finished well. Ben managed to secure a place in the final for this event and finished in a fantastic 3rd place in a time of 28.11seconds. Penny C and Ella B had a tough act to follow as they prepared for their breaststroke event. They did not disappoint and had terrific swims with Ella managing to secure a place in the final with well-earned 7th place.

Marcus L and Charlie W were up next in the 1 length front crawl, both gritting their teeth down the pool to the finish. Both boys secured places in the final with 4th and 8th places. Olivia M and Caitlyn followed earning themselves spots in the finals and finishing in brilliant 4th and 6th places.

There was some tough competition and the points were beginning to add up. The last individual race was the 2 lengths freestyle. Henry and Edward

were ready to swim again and Edward secured a spot in the final finishing in 6th place. The girls followed with Florence and Jessica securing a well-earned 4th and 7th place in the finals.

It was now time for the relays; it was all to swim for! The first relay was the 4x1 length freestyle where Marcus, Ben, Charlie and Edgar were competing. There were some tough and much older competitors and by the third leg the team was in 4th place. Ben set off on the last leg and sped down the pool with ease overtaking two swimmers to secure an amazing 2nd place! The girls followed with Olivia, Caitlyn, Penny and Ella whom all swam fantastically to secure a superb 3rd place.

Only two more events to go and the points were racking up. The next event was the 4x1 length mixed medley relay. The team of Henry, Jessica, Florence and Edward had a magnificent race and demonstrated their competitive nature and managed an outstanding 2nd place!

The last race was the 4x2 lengths mixed freestyle relay, it had been a long morning but the swimmers were still eager to race. Edgar, Ben, Caitlyn and Ella swam their hearts out and finished in a brilliant 5th place.
