Hello NVPians,

Diversity is beauty; be it a religion, faith, culture, or weather. Embracing the changing world is an art, and we continue to learn this through our lives. The phenomenon pushes us to come to a deeper understanding of what it means to live in a tolerant, diverse society. It also pushes us to feel proud of what we have created! Life has colors to reveal on every next turn. Some people use these opportunities more effectively than others, who get frustrated and abstain from benefiting from them. The former are more likely to be happier than the latter because they understand the essence of life; expecting change and being open to accepting it.

Live your life to the fullest and with that joy do not leave behind those deprived around you. Do what you can in your capacity because they are counting on you! Illustrations of these will be seen in this issue through the examples of NVP volunteers working tirelessly to elevate the living standards of our society.

Enjoy the read!

Coca-Cola has launched the Dasani Discovery Challenge (DDC) in Pakistan. It is a nationwide competition targeting plastic waste management.

The challenge is to submit creative, innovative, cost-effective ideas within the domain of plastic waste management, i.e. collection, sorting of waste, and recycling. Dasani supports 100% environment friendly and cost effective ways to recycle its Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

Abdul Bari Mentor - TCF Rahbar

Sometimes you just come across through a life changing experience that makes you think with a different perspective. I served as a ‘Rahbar’ at TCF. I told the children about Abdul Sattar Edhi’s philanthropic work, his endless dedication to donating and working with all the resources he had.

A few days later, one child came to me with 29 rupees to donate, although she was herself financially deprived. This indicates the impact volunteering can create in communities, creating a shared sense of responsibility around common welfare.

VolunteerTestimonials

Batool Abdullah I was placed at First Hand Foundation in the capacity of website development associate. I learnt a number of skills from my mentor and he helped us whenever we faced obstacles. My skills were polished with this internship and for that I would like to extend my gratitude to NVP.

Sajid Ali Currently, I am enrolled at Karachi University for a Bachelors in Sociology. My regret is not knowing about NVP earlier; I could have given more time to volunteering for Special Olympics Pakistan and other organizations. It is never too late, however, and I am happy to continue community service.

Sufyan khalid I with my team revamped First Hand Foundation’s website to make it more user friendly and attractive. With the help of NVP internship, I got to upgrade knowledge by learning new software languages and a platform to practice my existing skill-set. Other than this, I also got equipped with soft skills like communication, coordination and presentation skills. This was all possible because of NVP!

Vikram Kumar This was my first volunteering experience and I am ready for more! I recently worked with Special Olympics Pakistan. We shared a certain happiness with the children and left no stone unturned to teach them new skills and values. Thank you NVP for this opportunity.

TCF accomplishes Rahbar 29th Cycle

Special Olympics Pakistan had their final session in the month of December. Volunteers found it a joyful experience. The session helped Dewa students work on their fitness and provided our volunteers with a chance to become their mentors. A number of our volunteers at SOP performed very well and received a paid opportunity to work for the next season of 2019.

The 29th Rahbar cycle has come to an end with great learning for both mentors and mentees. The programme runs for seven consecutive Saturdays, three times a year at selected TCF Schools across Pakistan.

The key feature of the programme is the ‘Thought to Destiny’ outlook which serves as the guiding principle. It inspires young minds to think of themselves as creators of their own destiny rather than victims of difficult circumstances.

Besides serving as sports coach, these volunteers counsel kids in their matters, giving them a hope and support and never let them feel left out.

The Raana Liaquat Craftsmen's Colony (RLCC) setup a free Medical camp on the 20th of December in partnership with various pharmaceutical companies. People in nearby localities received free medical services including blood pressure, sugar control, BMI check ups etc. NVP Volunteer Dr. Farhan Rauf rendered his services at the camp as a Consultant.

Making health facilities accessible

Bilal and Wajahat are corporate professionals and due to official commitment they could not afford to come on Saturdays to attend orientation sessions.

As Petroleum Engineer, Bilal works at ENI as Project Trainee while Mohammad Wajahat works at InterMark as Sales Engineer. Looking at their commitment level we discussed different options to ensure they could get a chance to sign off forms and submit credentials, as the process is essential for any individual who wants to work as a volunteer.

The friends drove to the NVP office after work- hours one evening, and sought a discussion with NVP team to reach a volunteer opportunity of their choice We signed them up for Robin Hood Army campaign and currently they are serving graciously!

We rise by lifting others

Wasta Fatimah is one of our most consistent volunteers who worked on two assignments simultaneously. She worked at Street To School (STS) and Robin Hood Army (RHA).

Wasta is receiving appreciation certificate, a day before departing for U.S.

KNOW ABOUT WASTA? Glow of voluntary services before she departs for higher studies in U.S.

Earlier, Wasta completed her A level studies from PAF chapter in 2016-17 to apply for higher studies in engineering at the United States. During her career she felt it was critically important to contribute to her society and looked for an opportunity that suited her interest and availability. Wasta joined our team in November last year and decided to contribute most of her available time for NVP campaign.

She has been very passionate about community service.

She picked two portfolios:EDUCATION & LITERACY - This supported her keen interest to working with children.COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT - This supported her desire to give back to society in the convenient way that NVP offers.

On her departure in January to Dallas, U.S.A. to study mechanical engineering at the University of Texas, she talked about her volunteering experience and how it helped her build a strong network of friends from various institutions.

community services

I learnt a lot from NVP and SOP. I was blank before joining these organizations. I developed a deep understanding of volunteerism. I can’t describe this feeling in any words. After extensive hard work and dedication, I was offered paid employment at SOP. It was an auspicious journey of my life which I hope continues.

I was appointed as a Graphic designer. It was a home-based paid assignment. I designed an informative booklet of 10 pages. The aim of the booklet was to educate people in the dyeing profession about environmentally safer processes and abolishing existing ones that cause hazard to both the individual and the environment. This project equipped me with a skill of designing with Urdu which I didn’t have experience with before. Thanks to volunteer supervisor for helping me on every move.
