Readers

Recommend Based on the stats from our “Secret Santa Reading Challenge” last

month, our January entryway display is “Readers Recommend.” All the titles showcased

are books that have been given a recent “thumbs up” by our library patrons. If you’re unsure about what books you’d like to cozy up with this winter, why not check out these recommendations?

Our second display is aimed at our teen audience – “Last Chance at the YA Diner.” The titles featured here

showcase the works of veteran YA authors such as James Dashner, Marissa Meyer, and Maggie Stiefvater, and first-time authors like Katie Coyle, Estelle Laure, and Kelly Loy Gilbert; these

particular selections are looking to get their first circulation at the Fairview Library. Help ‘em out by checking ‘em out!

Cover2Cover January 19 at 1:30. This month’s title: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. In nineteenth-century China, in a remote Hunan county, a girl named Lily, at the tender age of seven, is paired with a laotong, an “old same,” in an emotional match that will last a lifetime. The laotong, Snow Flower, introduces herself by sending Lily a silk fan on which she’s written a poem in nu shu, a unique language that Chinese women created in order to communicate in secret, away from the influence of men. As the years pass, Lily and Snow Flower send messages on the fan and compose stories on handkerchiefs, reaching out of isolation to share their hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. Together they endure the agony of footbinding and reflect upon their arranged marriages, their loneliness, and the joys and tragedies of motherhood. The two find solace in their friendship, developing a bond that keeps their spirits alive. But when a misunderstanding arises, their relationship suddenly threatens to tear apart –Amazon

Fiction Addiction The Fiction Addiction Teen Book Club will meet Monday, January 23 at 3:30 pm. This month’s title is Wrecked by Anna Davies. Ever since the death of her parents, Miranda has lived on Whym Island,

taking comfort in the local folklore, which claims a mysterious sea witch controls the fate of all on the island and in its surrounding waters. Sometimes it’s just easier to believe things are out of your control. But then a terrible boating accident takes the lives of several of her friends, and Miranda is rescued by a mysterious boy who haunts her dreams. Consumed by guilt from the accident, she finds refuge in late-night swims—and meets Christian, a boy who seems eerily familiar, but who is full of mystery: He won’t tell her where he is from, or why they can only meet at the beach. But Miranda falls for him anyway…and discovers that Christian’s secrets, though meant to protect her, may bring her nothing but harm. -Amazon
