It appears winter may be finally moving on! We’ve had our share of snow which is the most I’ve seen since moving to the island. Time to start getting our cars prepped for a busy season. Already in 2017, we have had the annual Polar Bear run, organized by Malcolm and Janet Hargrave, and an after-noon of ten-pin bowling, organized by Marilyn and Roger Tarry. Upcoming events include a car run on March 19

th around

Nanaimo, Wagonmaster needed, and wine tasting and olive oil sampling at the Wine Works and Olive Branch Tasting Bar, organized by Marilyn Tarry. Our first General Meeting of 2016 was on January 19

th,

Joe Smith won his 2017 membership dues in the Early Bird draw. Following the meeting Brian Collings put on a presentation on engine tuning with a quite large, interested crowd. Our February meeting was held on February 16

th, and the presentation by Brian Collings was a

slide show, provided by Peter Tyler, on his visit to the Haynes Museum in Yeovil and the Cots-wold’s Museum at Bourton-on-the-Water. A large crowd enjoying the many vintage car photo-graphs and calling out the models as they appeared. A great trip down memory lane and many thanks to Peter for sharing pictures of his trip with the group. Paul Mansell and Terry MacFarlane received their Long-Distance awards for 2016. Hopefully, branch members have already completed their registration for the 2017 Long Dis-tance Award. We have a busy year ahead with hosting the AGM on July 8

th at the Nanaimo Curling Club. This

is also the 150th Birthday of Canada and will be our theme throughout the weekend. Brits On

The Beach on July 9th and don’t forget the Meet and Greet on July 7

th at Boston Pizza. Check

the calendar for details. We also need volunteers to assist with planning the various events over that weekend as well as a 2-3-hour time commitment during the Brits car show to ensure suc-cess. Contact myself with your availability. More events will be added to the calendar as spring and summer arrive, check the calendar reg-ularly for details on upcoming events. Happy motoring and look forward to seeing you out there. Regards, Steve Roebuck - CIB Chair.

th annual Polar Bear Walk at Neck Point Park

Although the weather was cold, we had a lovely dry morning to walk around Neck Point Park. We were very impressed that 2 members brought their old English cars – Norm Hall with his TR7 and Len Smith with his MGA. We had many people dressed in fancy Hawaiian costumes, and Howard was the only one to actually brave wearing a pair of shorts! Approximately 40 members walked around the park and went for lunch at the ABC Country Restaurant. The food and ser-vice were very good, and it was great to have the use a private room for our event. While we were eating the weather changed to snow, so we were very fortunate to have such a dry morning. As in previous years, we did a raffle for the adoption of OH-ECC, our Branch’s WWF polar bear, and this year it was won by Sylvia Sparke, who now has the honour of look-ing after him for the next 12 months. In addition to the bear, Sylvie won a pineapple and wildlife calendar. Two other pineapples were raffled off to Judy Unia and Brian Col-lings. The winners of the best Hawaiian costumes were Howard Lockhart and Marilyn Tarry, with Steve Roebuck as the runner-up. We collected a total of $107.00 for the raffle, and after expenses, we were able to do-nate $90.00 to the Canadian Federation of Wildlife for their polar bear protection pro-ject. Thanks everyone! Malcolm & Janet Hargrave
