• The copula • Desu (pronounced as “de-ssss”)• Noun+desu• Ohta desu. “I am Ohta.”• Sensee desu. “S/he is a teacher.”

• If you are already talking about something (say, nationality of a group of people).
• Following a statement about one person,
• E.g. Obama-san wa Amerika jin desu.
• Simply, (Jaa) ______ wa? (with a rising intonation)

• If no preceding statement…
• Attach か at the end of the sentence (with a rising intonation)• おおた sensee wa Nihon jin desu.

How to answer the question?• Yes (thatʼs the case).
• はい。Or ええ。
• はい、soo desu/ええ soo desu.
• No (thatʼs not the case).
• いいえ。
• いいえ、soo ja arimasen.
