    China Musical Instrument

    The !rhu $or Chinese iolin% is a kind oftwo)stringed bowed musical instrument. Itshistory can be dated back to Tang ynastyoer -, years ago. !rhu can be used as asolo performance as well as in small musicalgroups and large orchestras. It is one ofthe most popular bowed string instrumentsused by many ethnic groups in China.

    The Gu/heng is a Chinese plucked/ither. It is made of -0)12 or more stringsand moable bridges. +eople beliee that ithas been inented during the 3arring 4tates+eriod $567)11- 'C%. The performer pluckthe strings at the right portion with right

    hand, and left hand presses the string on theleft side of the bridge to produce pitchornamentation and ibrato. The skilledplayer can create sounds that can eoke thesense of waterfall, thunder, and een thescenic countryside.

    'ig rum is usually a stretched hide oer ahollow essel. +layer use two bamboo or woodsticks to beat the drum. 8rom ancient to moderntimes, 'ig rum has always been a folk musicalinstrument liked by people around the country. It iswidely used in the occasions of celebration, military,entertainment and festial, etc.

    The serunaiis a reed wind instrument. Theinstrument is hand)cared, and is usually highlyornamented with intricate detailing andpainting. Much like western reed instruments,the serunai is made in arying lengths whicha9ect its register. In western musicalterminology, these might be called #soprano,##tenor,# or #alto.# In Malay, the instrument isreferred to as anak $i.e. small or child%,

    or ibu $i.e. large or parent%. The design ofthe serunai reed is similar to that used in thebassoon or !nglish horn. The serunai is playedusing a techni:ue known a #circle breathing# or#cycle breathing.# In this techni:ue air is drawnin through the nose as it is simultaneously

    blown through the instrument. The resulting sound is constant note ordrone.

    The gambusis much like the #lute.# Its twelestrings $si; pairs of two% are plucked with aplectrum or #pick.# "nlike western instrumentssuch as the mandolin, the gambushas no frets.The gambus appears to hae eoled fromArabic instruments in appearance, tuning andperformance style.
