Overview In this presentation we would like to share ourexperiences in Japan.
The extent of damage by the disaster to the affected
areas we visited. The efforts made by the Japanese people to reconstruct
and restore Japan.

Recovery and Reconstruction
Debris Approx. 18.2 million tons of debris generatedby the earthquake(equivalent to general solid wastegenerated over 23 years in the prefecture)-Disposal byApril 2014
All the emergency shelters have been closed down andpeople have been moved to temporary houses.
All the main ports and Sendai airport have been
reopened. 40% of the farmland restored
Roads and railways almost all restored.

housing.
All the products are screened for radioactivity. 500,000 tons (22%) of 2.28 million tons of debris have
been transported to storage sites.

One of the three scenic beauties of Japan Made up of a lot of different islands The islands in the bay area protected Matsushima from major
damages Tourist spots were closed because of the disaster and it
affected the tourism.

Death toll exceed 3500 people
The tsunami damaged the rice cultivation farms
Over 22000 buildings were totally destroyed with anadditional 11000 buildings with major or minordamages.

The volunteers of this organization shared their effortstowards helping the victims
The difficulties they faced while trying to provideeffective aid.
Temporary housing for the victims-7153 Since many people are suffering from psychological
trauma, through regular checkups they checked thevictims conditions.

Exchange programs with the students of the university.
The students talked about their experiences on the day
of the disaster and their recovery.
They also shared about disaster safety and emphasizedon disaster preparedness.

Cultural exchange programs with the students
Discussed our action plan and our own experience of the2004 tsunami.

Schools Hibari Kindergarten, Ishinomaki
Visited this Kindergarten in Ishinomaki city and the
kids performed for us.
Wada Elementary School, Tokyo
Had a cultural exchange program.
We discussed about differences between elementaryschools in Maldives and Japan.
Played some traditional Japanese games with the kids.
We additionally performed a traditional dance for the
students

Broadcasts to aid evacuation efforts and also toconnect friends and families.

Ikebukuro Life Safety Learning
Center
This is a center in which people can learn about damagescaused by disasters such as earthquakes, floods, or fire aswell as how to prepare for mitigation of damages.
We ourselves learned about safety measures andexperienced a simulation model of the Great East Japan
Earthquake.

Japanese People
Their kind, gentle demeanor. Their consistent efforts in bringing Japan back to its
place.
Their incredible strength to go through such an ordeal
without faltering is truly incredible
Their devotion to educate people about such disastersare so commendable.
Their patience in times of despair is so inspiring. Their cheerful faces, even though they have been
through so much.

Tips for earthquake safety
Always keep emergency supplies, i.e water, food. Protect yourself first!
Keep calm. Check all fire sources, put them out quickly
Dont Panic!
Make sure you have a way out; open doors andwindows.
Dont rush out in a panic. Watch out for falling objects!
Keep away from gateposts and walls
Get the right information and take the right action. Make sure your family and neighbors are safe.
Work together on rescue and first aid.
Make sure electricity and gas are off before evacuation.
