So Prince Fire-fade did as he wastold, and every thing came to passjust as the Wise Old Man of theSea had told him. As soon as hewas come to the Sea-King's palace,he made haste, and climbed up intothe cassia-tree, and sat there. Thencame the maidens of the PrincessPearl, the Sea-King's daughter, car-rying golden water-pots. Theywere just going to draw water, whenthey saw a flood of light upon thewell. They looked up, and there in

Without tasting the water,the Prince took the jewel that hungat his neck, put it between his lips,and let it drop into the golden cup.It stuck to the cup, so that themaidens could not take it off; so theybrought the cup, with the jewel onit, to the Princess PearlWhen she saw the jewel, the

he dropped this jewel from his lipsinto the cup, and we have broughtit to you." Then Princess Pearl,thinking this very strange, went outto look. She was delighted at thesight. He made him come down, andled him into the palace, where heseated him upon a throne madeof sea-asses7 skins, and silk rugs,eight layers of each. Then a greatfeast was spread, and every onewas so kind to Prince Fire-fade,that the end of it was, he marriedPrincess Pearl, and lived in thatland for three years.

Now, one night, when the threeyears had almost passed, PrinceFire-fade thought of his home, and

one deep sigh.Princess Fearl was grieved, and

told her father, saying; "We havebeen so happy these three years, andhe never sighed before, but, lastnight, he heaved one deep sigh.What can the meaning of it be?"So the Sea-king asked the Princeto tell him what ailed him, andalso what had been the reason ofhis coming to that land. Then PrinceFire-fade told the Sea-King all thestory of the lost fish-hook, and how

So all the fishes said; "The tai*has been complaining of somethingsticking in his throat, and hurtinghim when he eats, so perhaps he hastaken the hook."

So they made the tai open hismouth, and looked in his throat,/and there, sure enough, was the

fish-hook. Then the hook waswashed and given to Prince Fire-fade.The Sea-King also gave him twojewels. One was called the tide-flowing jewel and the other wascalled the

he said then to the Prince; "Gk>home now to your own land, andtake back the fish-hook to yourbrother. In this way you shallplague him. If he plant rice-fieldsin the upland, make you yourrice-fields in the valley; and if hemake rice-fields in the valley, doyou make your rice-fields in theupland I will rule the water sothat it may do good to you, butharm to him. If Prince Fire-flashshouH be angry with you for this,
