I t is my

pleasure to

welcome you to

read through our

M i s s i o n ’ s

newsletter for

the year 2014.

Our Mission

continues to play a critical role as a

vehicle for propagating Kenya’s

Foreign Policy through positive

engagement with our partners and

stakeholders in the region.

The Kenyan Diaspora has also been a

critical component in moving forward

our country’s economic objectives. In

this regard, the Mission, in

conjunction with the Diaspora,

successfully organized the 2nd Kenyan

Diaspora Conference in Paris on 31st

May, 2014.

It is clear that the ushering of a new,

youthful and dynamic jubilee political

dispensation in Kenya has brought

about a re-thinking of our diplomatic

values and strategies as a country. The

aim is to continue growing as an

economic leader in the region, more

Afro-centric in orientation. Globally,

Kenya strives to continue forging even

closer ties with her traditional

partners and friends.

While these initiatives and efforts are

bearing fruits, more needs to be done

to achieve Kenya’s socio-economic

development goals. Hence our

Mission’s Economic Diplomacy

strategy is to attract more investment

opportunities in Kenya.

This newsletter captures some of the

Mission’s different activities. Last year

for instance, our Mission launched the

‘’Friends of Kenya Association’’, which

is a group comprising of Heads of

French Companies with activities in

Kenya. Our objective is to spur an

even greater presence of French

companies in Kenya. My team and I

also made several visits aimed at

achieving the objectives of Kenya’s

Foreign Policy.

I hope that you will find this

newsletter useful and informative.

J ’ai le plaisir de vous inviter à lire le

bulletin de notre ambassade pour

l’année 2014. Notre ambassade

continue de jouer un rôle clé, en tant

que véhicule pour la propagation de la

politique étrangère kenyane, par des

interactions positives avec nos

partenaires et les parties prenantes

dans la région. La Diaspora kenyane

est aussi essentielle pour l’avancement

des objectifs économiques de notre

pays. A cet égard, l’Ambassade en

collaboration avec la Diaspora, a

organisé avec succès, le 2ème

Conférence pour la Diaspora qui s’est

tenue le 31 mai 2014 à Paris.

Il est clair que l’accueil d’un nouvel

ordre politique avec une jeune et

dynamique direction à sa tête a incité

le Kenya à réfléchir sur ses valeurs

diplomatiques et ses stratégies.

L’objectif est de poursuivre la

croissance en tant qu’un leader

économique de la région et avec une

orientation afro centrique. Sur le plan

global, le Kenya s’emploie à forger les

liens plus étroits avec ses partenaires

et amis traditionnels.

Bien que ces initiatives et efforts

portent leurs fruits, davantage

d’efforts sont nécessaires pour

accomplir les objecti fs socio-

économiques du Kenya . Par

conséquent, notre stratégie pour la

diplomatie économique est d’attirer

p l u s d ’ o p p o r t u n i t é s p o u r

l’investissement au Kenya.

Ce bulletin capture l’essence des

activités de notre ambassade. L’année

dernière par exemple, notre

ambassade à lancé « Les Amis du

Kenya », un groupe comprenant les

dirigeants des sociétés françaises qui

ont des activités au Kenya. Notre

objectif est de stimuler une présence

encore plus grande des sociétés

françaises au Kenya. Nous avons aussi

– mon équipe et moi – effectué

plusieurs visites dans le but de réaliser

les objectifs de la politique étrangère

kenyane.

Kenya began a new journey three years

ago with the promulgation of a new

constitution in August 2010. The first

major milestone was achieved by the

peaceful and successful 4th March general

election. With a historic voter turnout of

over 85%, the complex six-tier voting

ushered in a new generation to lead the

country. At its helm is President Uhuru

Muigai Kenyatta. His electoral running

mate is Deputy President William

Samoei Ruto.

They were both sworn

in during a colourful

inauguration ceremony

on the 9th of April 2013.

In his inauguration

speech, the President

h i g h l i g h t e d h i s

c o m m i t m e n t t o

devolution, peace and

economic growth.

Devolved governance is the cornerstone

of the new constitution and 47 counties

were created in this respect prior to

elections. In the same vein, elected

positions were created for Governors,

Senators, Country Representatives and

Women’s Representative. Together with

the pre-existing positions of Member of

Parliament and President they

constituted the six elections that were

held simultaneously. As a result, Kenya

now has a bicameral parliament, the first

time since 1966.

The President addressed the bicameral

parliament during the State Opening on

16th April 2013 and outlined nine pillars

that will guide his government:

Transparency, Fight against corruption,

Devolution, Protection of rights and

freedoms, Peace and security, Reduction

of unemployment, Streamlining

government, Service delivery and

Implementation of the new constitution.

A week later the President appointed

Cabinet secretaries, formerly ministers,

who were vetted by a Parliamentary

Committee of Appointments before

being approved by the National

Assembly. In total Kenya has 18 Cabinet

Secretaries, a significant reduction from

the previous coalition government which

had 44 ministers.

Le Kenya a commencé une nouvelle

ère, il y a trois ans, avec la promulgation

de la nouvelle constitution en août 2010.

La première étape capitale a été franchie

par l’élection pacifique et réussie du 4

mars 2013. Avec une participation

historique de 85%, l’élection complexe à

six-niveaux a accueilli une nouvelle

génération pour diriger le pays. A sa tête

est Président Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.

Son colistier électoral, William Samoei

Ruto, est le Vice-Président.

Les deux hommes ont été assermentés

lors d’une cérémonie d’inauguration

haute en couleurs le 9 avril 2013. Dans

son discours d’inauguration, le Président

a souligné son engagement à la

dévolution du pouvoir, la paix et la

croissance économique.

La dévolution du pouvoir est la pierre

angulaire de la nouvelle constitution et

47 comtés ont été créés à cet égard

avant les élections. Dans la même veine,

des postes d’élus ont été créé pour des

Gouverneurs, Sénateurs, Représentants

des Comtés et des Représentantes des

Femmes. Ces postes d’élus avec ceux

préexistants de Député et de Président

de la République, ont constitué les six

élections qui ont été tenues

simultanément. En conséquence, le

Kenya a maintenant un parlement

bicaméral, le premier depuis 1966.

Le Président a fait un discours devant le

Parlement bicaméral pendant l’ouverture

du Parlement le 16 avril 2013. Il a

présenté les grandes lignes de son

gouvernement : la Transparence, la Lutte

contre la corruption, la Dévolution, la

Protection des droits et des libertés, la

Paix et la sécurité, la Réduction du

chômage, la Rationalisation du

gouvernement, la Prestation de service

et la Mise en œuvre de la Nouvelle

Constitution.

Une semaine plus tard le Président a

nommé les ministres, qui ont été avalisés

par la Commission Parlementaire des

Nominations avant d’être approuvés par

l’Assemblée Nationale. Au total, le Kenya

a 18 ministres, une réduction significative

du précédent gouvernement de coalition,

qui avait 44 ministres.

A NEW VISION FOR A STRONG KENYA

Former United Nations Assistant Secretary General and Deputy

UNEP Executive Director, Ambassador Amina Mohamed was ap-

pointed Kenya’s first female Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs and

International Trade on 23rd April 2013. A seasoned diplomat with

over 25 years of experience in diplomacy, she has held senior posi-

tions in government including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry

of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs and Ambassa-

dor/Permanent Representative in the Permanent Mission of the Re-

public of Kenya to the UN in Geneva. Since taking the helm, she has

succeeded in invigorating Kenya’s foreign relations. She is determined

and committed to deliver on the promises of the Jubilee Government

and has set out to articulate and give new vision to Kenya’s Foreign

Policy. Seeing a lot of opportunities for Kenya in the global arena, she

has not hidden her ambitions to take the country’s trading relations a

notch higher by ensuring eradication of trade imbalances. In this re-

spect, of foremost importance in her blueprint is to guide and imple-

ment Kenya’s quest for success in promoting Economic Diplomacy.

She sees Kenya’s Embassies abroad as the appropriate vehicles to at-

tract investment into the country. She has ensured that this is a key

and specific mandate empowered to the missions abroad.

L’ancienne Secrétaire Général Adjointe des Nations Unies et Directrice

Exécutive Adjointe pour le PNUE a été nommée Ministre des Affaires

Etrangères et du Commerce Extérieur le 23 avril 2013, devenant la

première femme a occuper ce poste. Diplomate expérimentée, avec

plus de 25 ans d’expérience dans la diplomatie, elle a occupé des postes

clés dans le gouvernement y compris Chef de Cabinet du Ministère de

la Justice, de la Cohésion Nationale et des Affaires Constitutionnelles

et Ambassadeur/Représentante Permanente à la Mission Permanente

du Kenya à l’ONU en Genève. Depuis qu’elle a pris les rennes, elle a

réussi à dynamiser les relations extérieures du Kenya. Elle est détermi-

née et engagée à respecter les promesses du « gouvernement du jubi-

lé » et s’est fixée l’objectif d’articuler et de donner une nouvelle vision

à la politique étrangère du Kenya. Voyant beaucoup d’opportunités

pour le Kenya sur la scène mondiale, elle ne cache pas ses ambitions à

porter les échanges commerciaux du Kenya un cran plus haut en assu-

rant l’élimination du déséquilibre commercial. A cet égard, orienter et

mettre en œuvre la quête du Kenya pour réussir la promotion de la

diplomatie économique revêt une importance primordiale. Elle considè-

re les Ambassades du Kenya à l’étranger comme des instruments ap-

propriés pour attirer des investissements aux pays. Elle a veillé à ce

que ces missions à l’étranger aient ce mandat clé et spécifique.

LAUNCH OF FRIENDS OF KENYA - LANCEMENT DES AMIS DU KENYA

The Friends of Kenya initiative was launched at the Hotel

Pullman in La Défense, Paris on 11th September 2013. 15 heads

of French companies with business activities in Kenya were

present to support the initiative and discuss the business

environment in Kenya and in the East African Region. They

notably represented: AGS France, Air France, CIAN, Dassault

Systèmes, Egis International, Egis Kenya Ltd, Lafarge, Orange,

Oréal, Thales International Africa, and Wastes MECK.

French companies in Kenya have increased from 50 to 62 in

the last few years with companies such as Oréal and Pernod

Ricard setting up their regional headquarters in Nairobi. This

attests to the role and place of Kenya as a regional hub and as

the gateway to East Africa. Indeed, this motivated the opening

of a UbiFrance office in Kenya that has been operational since

September 2013. Kenya is also one of the priority countries

for the French Ministry of Foreign Trade whose Minister, Mrs

Nicole Bricq, led a high-level delegation on a trade mission to

Kenya in November 2012. It was her first official visit to Sub-

Saharan Africa.

During the launch, it was noted that French presence in Kenya

was below its potential. In this respect, Kenya’s Ambassador

to France expressed the hope that the Friends of Kenya

initiative would contribute to increased and improved

relations between Kenya and France while Mr Laurent Padoux,

Southern Africa Expert for CIAN (French Council of Investors

in Africa) added that the initiative is a welcome opportunity to

provide more information on a country that is not well known

in the French business community.

L’initiative des Amis du Kenya a été lancée le 11 Septembre

2013 à l’Hotel Pullman, à la Défense, Paris. Quinze chefs d’entre-

prises français ayant des activités commerciales au Kenya étaient

présents pour soutenir l’initiative et pour discuter de l’environne-

ment des affaires au Kenya et dans la région de l’Afrique de l’Est.

Ils ont notamment représenté AGS France, Air France, CIAN,

Le nombre d’entreprises Françaises au Kenya a augmenté de 50 à

gne du rôle et de la place du Kenya comme plaque tournante ré-

gionale et en tant que porte d’entrée à l'Afrique de l'Est. En effet,

cela a motivé l'ouverture d'un bureau UbiFrance au Kenya qui est

opérationnel depuis septembre 2013. Le Kenya est également l'un

des pays prioritaires pour le Ministère Français du Commerce Ex-

térieur dont la Ministre, Mme Nicole Bricq, a dirigé une délégation

de haut niveau pour une mission commerciale au Kenya en novem-

bre 2012. C’était sa première visite officielle en Afrique subsaha-

rienne.

Lors du lancement de l’initiative, il a été noté que la présence fran-

çaise au Kenya était inférieure à son potentiel. À cet égard, L’Am-

bassadeur du Kenya en France a exprimé l'espoir que l'initiative

des Amis du Kenya contribuera au renforcement et à l’ améliora-

tion des relations entre la France et le Kenya, tandis que M. Lau-

rent Padoux, Expert de l'Afrique Australe pour CIAN (Conseil

Français des Investisseurs en Afrique) a ajouté que l'initiative est

une occasion bienvenue pour fournir plus d'informations sur un

pays qui n'est pas bien connu dans les milieux d'affaires Français.

OUTREACH - ACTIVITES REGIONALES : LILLE

It is customary in France to give a name to a class of students

graduating at the same time. Thus the final year public service

trainees in the Regional Institute of Administration of Lille, chose to

have their class named after Prof. Wangari Maathai. H.E. Ambassador

Salma Ahmed accompanied by Mr Moni Manyange, Second Secretary,

Economic and Commerical Affairs, attended the 2013 class Open

Day. The Ambassador gave a key note address that exhaustively

situated the life of the Late Prof Wangari Maathai, the Kenya Nobel

Laureate. She also asserted that more needs to be done to address

the challenges of sustainable development whilst outlining Kenya’s

efforts in tackling the twin challenges of economic progress and

environmental protection.

The Ambassador held meetings with the Director of the Institute, Mr

Gilbert Elkaim and the Chairman of its Governing council, Mr

Dominique Lacambre. They discussed possibilities of cooperation in

training in decentralization à la française of various Kenyan officials

including Governors. It was stressed that this could anchor future

cooperation in public administration between the two countries in

the areas of skills development and training of public officials dealing

with policy implementation.

Finally the Ambassador, the Director of the Institute and the Deputy

Mayor of Lille planted a tree in the Lille Gardens in commemoration

of Prof. Wangari Maathai’s work in environmental protection.

La promotion de 2013 de l’Institut Régional d’Administration a

choisi le nom de Wangari Maathai. Ils ont organisé une journée

portes ouvertes à laquelle ils ont invité S.E. Mme Salma Ahmed.

Elle y a assisté accompagnée par M. Moni Manyange, Deuxième

Secrétaire chargé des Affaires Economiques et Commerciales.

L’Ambassadeur a prononcé un discours sur la vie de Wangari

Maathai, prix Nobel de la Paix en 2004. Dans son discours elle

a mix l’accent sur le besoin de faire plus pour relever les défis

du développent tout en exposant les efforts du Kenya pour

aborder le double défi de progrès économique et de protection

de l’environnement.

L’Ambassadeur s’est entretenue avec le Directeur de l’Institut,

M. Gilbert Elkaim et le Président de son Conseil d’Administra-

tion, M. Dominique Lacambre. Ils ont discuté des possibilités de

coopération pour la formation des divers membres du gouver-

nement kenyan, y compris des Gouverneurs, sur le thème de la

décentralisation à la française. Il était souligné qu’un tel échange

pouvait ancrer de futures coopérations dans le domaine de

l’administration publique entre les deux pays, notamment pour

le développement des compétences et la formation des agents

publics chargés de la mise en œuvre des politiques.

La journée s’est terminée aux jardins de Lille où l’Ambassadeur,

le Directeur de l’Institut et le Maire Adjoint de Lille ont planté

un arbre pour commémorer le travail de Wangari Maathai pour

la protection de l’environnement.

OUTREACH - ACTIVITES REGIONALES : BORDEAUX

H.E. Ambasssador Salma Ahmed, made an official visit to

Bordeaux in the Aquitaine region of France from 25th –

28th April, 2014. She was accompanied by Mr Moni

Manyange, Second Secretary and Head of Economic and

Commercial Affairs at the mission. The purpose of the visit

was to promote Kenya’s trade and investment

opportunities. In this respect the Kenyan Ambassador met

various representatives and heads of companies . These

companies included Interequipments, Tropalis, Bordeaux

Tradition, CEVA laboratories, Lafons, as well as the

Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry. H.E. the

Ambassador was also interviewed by Mr Pascal Rabiller of

Objectif Aquitaine a regional monthly magazine. During the

interview she fielded questions on Kenya’s foreign goals.

Bordeaux dans la Région Aquitaine en France du 25 au 28

avril 2014. Elle était accompagnée par M. Moni Manyange,

Deuxième Secrétaire, Responsable Affaires Economiques

et Commerciales à l’Ambassade. Le but de cette visite

était de promouvoir les opportunités d’investissement et

de commerce que présente le Kenya. A cet égard,

l’Ambassadeur a rencontré différents représentants et

OUTREACH - ACTIVITES REGIONALES : BORDEAUX

At the invitation of the Mayor of Bordeaux, Mr Alain Juppé,

(former Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs),

Ambassador Salma Ahmed visited Bordeaux from the 5th

to 6th June 2014. She was accompanied by Mr Moni

Manyange, Second Secretary and Head of Economic and

Commercial Affairs at the Mission. The Ambassador made a

presentation titled: “Africa Rising: the case of East

Africa” during the conference on “Africa, the land of

Good News”. Her presentation elucidated the East Africa

Community’s strategic drive. The conference was co-

organized by the City of Bordeaux and La Fondation

Prospective et Innovation. The Ambassador also met with Mr.

Jean-Pierre Raffarin, Vice Chairman of the French Senate

and former Prime Minister.

intitulé: « La Montée en Puissance de l’Afrique: le cas

OFFICIAL VISITS—PORTUGAL

At the invitation of the Government of Portugal,

Ambassador Salma Ahmed travelled to Lisbon from 15th

–16th January 2014 to attend the New Year Greetings

ceremony. It provides an opportunity for the Portuguese

President to pronounce the focus of the country’s foreign

policy in 2014. The Ambassador also took the

opportunity to hold meetings with high-level officials from

the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister to discuss the

actualization of an educational technologies project in

Kenya. Notably in attendance was Mr Mario Franco of

Millenium Edu, who is part of the consortium that

implemented the Portuguese model of education

technologies. The Ambassador was accompanied by Mr

Moni Manyange, Head of Commercial and Economic

Affairs of the Kenya Embassy Paris. He represented the

Ambassador during a meeting with Mr Pedro Madeira

Rodrigues, the Secretary General of the Portuguese

Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The meeting

acknowledged that there exists huge potential for trade

and investment between Kenya and Portugal that remains

largely unexplored. In this regard the meeting

underscored the importance of engaging aggressively to

exploit these opportunities.

deur Salma Ahmed, s’est rendu à Lisbonne du 15 au 16 jan-

vier 2014 pour participer à la cérémonie des vœux du nou-

vel an. Elle présente une occasion pour le Président Portu-

gais de présenter l’orientation de la politique etrangère du

pays pour l’année 2014. L’Ambassadeur a profité de cette

visite pour rencontrer des haut-responsables du Cabinet du

Premier Ministre Adjoint pour discuter l’actualisation d’un

projet de technologies éducatives au Kenya. Notamment

présent, était M. Mario Franco de Millenium Edu, qui était

membre du consortium responsable our la mise en œuvre

du modèle portugais de technologies éducatives. L’Ambas-

sadeur était accompagnée par M. Moni Manyange, Respon-

sable Affaires Commerciales et Economique de l’Ambassade

du Kenya à Paris. Il a représenté l’Ambassadeur lors d’une

réunion avec M. Pedro Madeira Rodrigues, le Secrétaire

Général du Chambre du Commerce et d’Industrie Portu-

gais. La réunion a reconnu qu’il y a un immense potentiel

pour le commerce et pour l’investissement entre le Kenya

et le Portugal qui demeure largement inexploré. A cet

égard, la réunion a souligné l’importance de s’investir pour

développer ces opportunités

The Kenya Embassy in Paris which is accredited to

Portugal and the Portuguese Chambers of Commerce

and Industry, jointly organized the first Kenya-

Portugal Trade and Investment Workshop in Lisbon

on 3rd July 2014. Ambassador Salma Ahmed gave a

key note address during the event. She was

accompanied by Mr Moni Manyange, Head of

Economic and Commercial Affairs at the Mission. The

event was attended by over 20 companies with an

interest in investing and/or doing business with

Kenya. The highlight of the workshop was a

testimony by a Portuguese company doing business in

Kenya. The event

L’Ambassade du Kenya a Paris, accrédité au Portugal, et la

OFFICIAL VISIT—SERBIA

Ambassador Salma Ahmed, made an official visit to

Belgrade, Serbia on 10th –13th March 2014. She

was accompanied by Ms Josephine Ibrahim, First

Counsellor and Mr Moni Manyange, Second

Secretary. The delegation from the Kenya Embassy

had meetings with various stakeholders aimed at

deepening Kenya-Serbia relations. They met with:

Mr Misko Subotic, Kenya’s Honorary Consul in

Serbia; Mr Goran Vujicic, Director of Africa and the

Middle East in the Serbian Ministry of Foreign

Affairs; Brigadier General Bojan Zrnic, Director of

The Kenyan government is cognizant of the contribution

that the Kenyan Diaspora makes to the development

agenda of our country and in particular the realization of

the Vision 2030. It is with this in mind that it has

incorporated Diaspora Diplomacy as one of the pillars of

Kenya’s foreign policy. The centre-piece of the

Government’s Diaspora policy is to facilitate the Diaspora

so as to unleash their potential. The Kenyan Embassy in

Paris has been sensitizing Kenyans in France, to look for

business opportunities for their personal development and

to a larger extent the overall development of our beloved

country. To consolidate this process and to move forward,

the Kenya Embassy invited experts in the business and

investment sectors as key

speakers in the 2nd Kenya

Diaspora Trade and

Investment Conference

which was held at the

Maison de l’UNESCO on 31st

May 2014. Speakers came

from the Ministry of Foreign

Affairs and International

Trade, the Kenya Investment

Authority, and the official

sponsors, the Bank of Africa.

Some members of the Diaspora also shared their

experiences on their venture into business and the

challenges that they faced. This year’s event was organized

under the theme “Wakenya, tujijenge kwa

biashara” (Kenyans, lets develop ourselves through

investment) It aimed to sensitize Kenyans in France and

Europe on the need to initiate investment opportunities

both in Europe and in Kenya by offering them an

opportunity to equip themselves with entrepreneurship

skills and to learn on the business opportunities available in

Kenya and in France.

couronnée Miss East Africa France 2014. La nouvelle Miss East Africa a

l’ambition de valoriser la création d’entreprises par les femmes et elle

aimerait créer sa propre ‘Maison de Couture’ en France pour établir un

lien entre le Kenya et la France. La première dauphine était Mlle Angela

Iradukunda du Rwanda et la deuxième dauphine était Mlle Maimona

Yusuf de la Tanzanie. Des créateurs de mode Africains ont aussi

présenté leurs créations, notamment, Martha Mpofu de Goddess House

of Fashion de Zimbabwe, Kashinde Mlenzie d’AfroTanzanite de la

Tanzanie, et Awa Daabo de La Reine du Sheba de Senegal. Les invités

d’honneurs comprenaient les Ambassadeurs de l’Afrique de l’Est à

savoir S.E. Mme Begum Karim Taj (Tanzanie), S.E.M Dieudonné

Ndabarushimana (Burundi) et S.E. Mme Nimisha Madhvani (Ouganda).

The 3rd edition of Miss East Africa Beauty Pageant was held on 7th

June, 2014 at the “Vedettes de Paris” boat at the foot of the Eiffel

Tower, Paris. The event was held under the patronage of Kenya’s

Ambassador, H.E. Ms Salma Ahmed, who is also the Chair of the

East African Community Group of Ambassadors. It was sponsored

by Kenya Airways, Bank of Africa, L’Oréal Paris and Suzie Beauty-

Kenya. The contest featured 15 contenders from the East African

Community Diaspora in France. Ms June Anyango Odhiambo, a

Kenyan second year Economics and Management postgraduate

student was officially crowned Miss East Africa France 2014. The

new Miss East Africa looks forward to empowering women to

start their own businesses and she would like to start her own

‘Maison de Couture’ in France to link Kenya and France. The first

runner-up was Ms Angela Iradukunda from Rwanda and second

runner-up Ms Maimona Yusuf from Tanzania. Fashion Designers

from Africa also showcased their creations. They included Martha

The Kenya Airways B787 Dreamliner made its

maiden flight on the Nairobi-Paris route on 4th

June 2014. It was flown by Captain Irene Mutungi,

the first African female B787 Dreamliner Captain.

Ambassador Lazarus Amayo, Kenya’s Director for

Europe in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and

International Trade was the passenger-in-chief of

the flight. Also onboard was H.E. Remi Maréchaux,

the French Ambassador to Kenya. The acquisition of this long

haul aircraft..is part of “Plan Mawingo” which aims to increase

the fleet from 47 to 119 by 2021 and the destinations from 65

to 115. Baptised “The Great Rift Valley”, the new dreamliner is

expected to encourage trade and tourism as well as other forms

of interaction between Kenya and France.

The Embassy of the Republic of Kenya in France and Kenya’s Permanent Delegation to UNESCO organized the

celebrations of Kenya’s 5oth independence anniversary at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France on 11th December

2013.

The festivities begun with the screening of a Kenyan movie «Leo», directed by Jinna Mutune. This was followed by a

debate on «The role of film education

and culture in Kenya». The debate was

moderated by Mr. Christian Manhart of

UNESCO.

The evening reception was attended by

over 200 guests including members of

the diplomatic corps, representatives of

the French Government, members of

the French Business Community and

Kenyans in France.

The guests were served with Kenyan

delicacies as they enjoyed Kenyan music.

The speech by H.E. Ms Salma Ahmed,

Kenya’s Ambassador to France,

captured the essence of the

celebrations. She traced Kenya’s journey

over the last 50 years while echoing the

milestones attained by the people of

Kenya.

In tune with the festive mood, a 50th

anniversary cake was cut and served to

guests. Guests left the event with Kenyan

roses courtesy of Redlands Roses. The

largely successful event coincided with

the start of Kenya@50 festivities that

were officially launched by President

Uhuru Kenyatta in Nairobi, Kenya. It is

expected that another major event will

be held before the golden jubilee year

ends.

L’Ambassade de la République du Kenya en France et la Délégation Permanente du Kenya auprès de l’UNESCO ont

organisé au siège de l’UNESCO à Paris, les célébrations pour fêter les 50 ans de l’Indépendence du Kenya, le 11 décembre

2013.

Les festivités ont commencé avec la

projection d’un film kenyan «Leo»

réalisé par Jinna Mutune. Le film a

été suivi par un débat sur «Le rôle de

l’éducation et de la culture

cinématographiques au Kenya». Ce

débat était animé par M. Christian

Manhart de l’UNESCO.

Plus de 200 invités étaient présents

à la réception en soirée dont des

membres du Corps Diplomatique,

des représentants du gouvernement

français, les entrepreneurs français

et des kenyans vivant en France.

aux invités sous un fond de musique

l’Ambassadeur du Kenya en France, a

exprimé l’essence des célébrations. Elle a

retracé le parcours du Kenya ces 50

dernières années tout en rappelant les

étapes atteintes par le peuple Kenyan.

En harmonie avec l’ambiance festive, un

gâteau du 50ème anniversaire a été coupé

et servi aux invités. Les invités sont partis

avec des roses du Kenya gracieusement

offertes par Redlands Roses. Cet

évènement largement réussi

correspondait au début des festivités

« Kenya@50 » qui ont été officiellement

lancé par le Président Uhuru Kenyatta, à

Nairobi, au Kenya. Il est prévu qu’un

autre évènement majeur aura lieu avant la

fin de l’année du 50ème anniversaire de

l’indépendance du Kenya.

S.E. Mme Salma AHMED a invité les Kenyans à

prendre un thé à la Chancellerie le 28 mars 2013. Le

thé, appelé Thé Trimestriel, a lieu tous les trois mois et

présente une occasion pour les kenyans résidant en

France de rencontrer l’Ambassadeur et le personnel

de l’Ambassade et de discuter avec eux des sujets qui

les préoccupent en France.

Pendant cette réunion, l’Ambassadeur a évoqué les

élections kenyanes qui avaient eu lieu le 4 mars 2013. Elle

a encouragé les kenyans en France à patienter et à

maintenir la paix tout en attendant la décision de la Cour

Suprême sur la validité des résultats.

Elle a réaffirmé la nécessité pour la Diaspora Kenyane en

France de s’unir pour créer une association. Cela leur

permettrait de bénéficier d’aide et d’autres avantages

dont jouissent les diasporas d’autres pays qui sont

organisés en associations.

De plus, l’Ambassadeur les a encouragé à investir au

Kenya aussi bien qu’en France. Elle a lancé le défi de créer

des entreprises tels que des tour opérateurs ou des

restaurants kenyans en France et s’est engagée à soutenir

de telles initiatives.

QUARTERLY TEA - THÉ TRIMESTRIEL

H.E. Ms Salma Ahmed hosted Kenyans to tea on 11th July

2014 at the Chancery. The tea, dubbed Quarterly tea, is a

forum held every three months as a way of bringing Kenyans

living in France to meet with the Ambassador and Embassy

officials to discuss issues affecting them in France.

The Tea was also attended by some Kenyan Members of

Parliament who were on an official visit by the Procedure and

House Rules Committee led by Hon. Justin Muturi, Speaker of

the National Assembly. Among the issues discussed were

notably the role of the Diaspora in Kenya’s development

including the possibility of voting in the next General Elections,

and the possibility of being represented in the Kenyan

Parliament. For her part, the Ambassador underscored the

importance of Diaspora investments in Kenya and re-iterated

that the Embassy would facilitate business skills development

among the Diaspora.

Kimbia* Kenya is a charity trail race which is held in the heart

of the Rift Valley in Kenya. In February 2014, 57 participants

including the famous marathoner Dominique chauvelier, set off

on this exceptional trail. They enjoyed magnificent landscapes

and discovered the Naivasha region during a safari in Lake

Nakuru National Park, a boat ride on Lake Naivasha to see the

hippopotamus… The high point of the week was certainly a day

spent in a Maasai village, discovering the way of life of an isolated

community: participants cooked with the women and men from

the village, worked with them to improve the infrastructure of

the local school before being welcomed by families. The human

dimension is at the heart of Kimbia Kenya with a charity

programme dedicated to education. Four schools located on the

path of the race were assisted in a substantive way: two water

reservoirs for two schools, renovation of two classes and the

purchase of school textbooks. The participants also largely

contributed to this programme having carried in their luggage

school supplies, clothes and sports equipment that they gave

away in the schools during discussion and recreational time with

the children.

The next edition is scheduled for 6th to 14th February 2015.

SPORTS TOURISM—LE TOURISME SPORTIF

Kimbia* Kenya est une un trail solidaire qui se déroule au

Kenya, au cœur de la Vallée du Rift. En février 2014, ces sont 57

participants, dont le célèbre marathonien Dominique Chauvelier

qui se sont élancés sur ce trail exceptionnel. Ils ont profité des

paysages somptueux et pu découvrir la région de Naivasha lors

d’un safari dans le parc national du Lac Nakuru et d’une sorte en

bateau sur le Lac Naivasha pour aller voir les hippoptames… Le

point d’orgue de la semaine fut certainement la journée passée

dans un village Masaï, à la découverte du mode de vie d’une

communauté isolée: les participants ont cuisiné avec les femmes

et les hommes du village, travaillé avec eux pour améliorer les

infrastructures de l’école avant d’être reçus par les familles. La

dimension humaine est d’ailleurs au cœur de Kimbia Kenya avec

un programme solidaire dédié à l’éducation. Quatre écoles

situées sur le parcours de la course ont pu être aidées de façon

concrète: deux réservoirs d’eau pour deux écoles, rénovation de

deux classes et achat de manuels scolaires. Les participants ont

aussi largement contribué à ce programme, en apportant dans

leurs bagages des fournitures scolaires, des vêtements et du

matériel sportif qu’ils ont offerts dans les écoles, à l’occasion des

temps d’échange et de jeu avec les enfants.

La prochaine édition est prévue du 6 au 14 février 2015.

As part of the Mission’s Sports Diplomacy, the Kenya Embassy

in Paris led by Ambassador Salma Ahmed was at the 38th

edition of the Paris International marathon on the 6th of April

2014. . The Kenyan Diaspora also came out in large numbers to

support Kenya’s elite runners. Flomena Cheyech did us proud

coming first in the women’s category of the race (2:22:44),

followed by Faith Cheamoi (2:31:59) who came fourth. The

Kenyan male runners dominated the top 10 led by Luca Kanda

(2:08:02) who took third position followed by Robert Kwambai

(2:08:48), Jackson Limo (2:09:06), Gideon Kipketer (2:09:06),

Mike Kigen (2:10:36) who took the 4th to 7th positions

respectively, and Mark Kiptoo (2:13:59 who finished the race in

9th position. Out of over 40,000 registered participants, Kenya

had 16 athletes half of whom finished in the top 10 of the men

and women’s categories. On the margins of the event, the

Kenya Tourist Board in Collaboration with Kenya Airways also

promoted Kenya as a sports tourism destination during the

Running Expo held for two days prior to the marathon.

KENYAN COLOURS IN THE PARIS MARATHONEDITION

Dans le cadre de la diplomatie sportive, l’Ambassade du

Kenya, menée par Ambassadeur Salma Ahmed était présent

lors de la 38ème édition du marathon international de Paris, le

6 avril 2014. Les membres de la Diaspora kenyane sont venus

en grand nombre pour soutenir les coureurs élites du Kenya.

Flomena Cheyech nous a rendu fiers en gagnant la catégorie

féminine de la course (2:22:44), suivi par Faith Cheamoi

(2:31:59) qui a fini en quatrième position. Les coureurs

kenyans étaient bien représentés dans les dix premières place

avec Luca Kanda (2:08:02), 3ème, Robert Kwambai (2:08:48),

4ème, Jackson Limo (2:09:06), 5ème, Gideon Kipketer

(2:09:06) 6ème, Mike Kigen (2:10:36), 7ème et enfin Mark

Kiptoo (2:13:59), 9ème. Sur 40,000 participants enregistrés, le

Kenya avait 16 athletes dont la moitié a fini parmi les dix

premiers dans les categories hommes et femmes. En marge de

cet évènement l’office du tourisme du Kenya en collaboration

avec Kenya Airways a assuré la promotion du Kenya en tant

que destination du tourism sportif pendant les deux jours du

Running Expo, juste avant le marathon.

Kenya once again proved itself to be the international

marathon champion during the 23rd edition of the La

Rochelle Marathon.

Kenyan Isaac Kosgei came first clocking 2:12:28 followed

by fellow compatriot Wilfred Murgor with 2:14:00.

Ethiopian Haylu Abebe came third, recording a time of

2:14:28.

The Kenyan Embassy in Paris was present at the

marathon to support the athletes as well as to promote

Kenya as a sports tourism destination.

Members of the Embassy’s staff manned the stand and

distributed promotional material to the public while

taking time to answer questions about the country.

Particular emphasis was placed on the promotion of the

Standard Chatered marathon in Nairobi as well as

Kimbia Kenya a trail run that takes place in the Naivasha

region.

KENYA SHINES AT THE LA ROCHELLE MARATHON

marathon international lors de la 23ème édition du

L'Ambassade du Kenya à Paris était présente au marathon

pour soutenir les athlètes ainsi que pour promouvoir le

tourisme sportif au Kenya .

Les membres du personnel de l'ambassade ont rencontré

le public dans un stand où ils ont distribué des brochures

et répondu aux questions sur le Kenya.

Un accent particulier a été mis sur la promotion du

marathon de Nairobi ainsi que de Kimbia Kenya une

course nature qui se déroule dans la région de Naivasha.

This was an opportunity to meet

Global Affairs and Mr Alain Lemee,

Director of International Sales and

Civil Aircraft, both from Dassault

Systems.

She then visited the company’s various pavilions and was

shown developments in the areas of Avionics engineering

and electronics.

The Marché Africain in Nogent-sur-Oise, on the outskirts

of Paris, is an annual event that aims to showcase the

riches of Africa. It provides a unique opportunity for Af-

rica to champion and celebrate its people, culture and

potential. As the country of honour, Kenya occupied the

largest space among more than 15 countries represented,

selling potential Kenyan manufactured exports and handi-

crafts, distributing documentation on Kenya and serving

tea and coffee to exhibitors and visitors alike.

The representatives of diplomatic missions were received

by Mr. Jean François Dardenne, the Mayor of Nogent-sur

-Oise with whom the Kenyan Embassy representatives

held bilateral talks about the potential for cooperation in

education, export and investment. After the Official

opening of the event, the Mayor hosted a lunch in

Kenya’s honour.

The Kenya Embassy was represented by Second Secre-

taries, Mr Moni Manyange and Mrs Mildred Kinyaga

Otunga as well as Ms Jacinta Onyango. They worked

hand in hand with the Diaspora to capitalize on the bene-

fits of the “Marché Africain” Day.

Le Marché Africain à Nogent-sur-Oise est un évènement

annuel qui a l’objectif d’être une vitrine pour les richesses

de l’Afrique. Il offre une occasion unique à l’Afrique de

promouvoir et célébrer son peuple, sa culture et son po-

tentiel. Comme pays d’honneur, le Kenya a occupé le plus

grand espace parmi plus de 15 pays représentés. On y

trouvait des exportations potentielles du Kenya ; des pro-

duits finis et des objets artisanaux ainsi que de la docu-

mentation sur le Kenya. Les visiteurs et les exposants ont

pu déguster du thé et du café du kenya.

Les représentants des missions diplomatiques ont été re-

çus par M. Jean François Dardenne, le Maire de Nogent-

sur-Oise avec qui les représentants de l’Ambassade du

Kenya ont discuté des possibilités de coopération dans les

domaines de l’éducation, des échanges commerciaux et de

l’investissement. Après l’ouverture officielle de l’évène-

ment, le Maire a offert un déjeuner en l’honneur du Kenya.

L’Ambassade du Kenya était représentée par les Deuxiè-

mes Secrétaires, M. Moni Manyange et Mme Mildred

Otunga ainsi que Mme Jacinta Onyango. Ils ont travaillé

main dans la main avec la Diaspora kenyane pour tirer

profit de cette vitrine.
