I would like to think that most peo-
ple in the world would help some-
one who was suffering if they had
the chance. I guess my op&mism
starts to take a hit when I consider
that in some cases the cost will be
higher for that help than in others.
To help someone with a meal or
transport someone to a doctor is
one thing. To offer oneself com-
pletely, all of one's money or &me,
is quite another.
Of course, there have been famous
examples of this type of giving. The
recently canonized St. Teresa of
Kolkata comes to mind. But I per-
sonally know of others who have
given everything for another.
Friends who have adopted an older
child, gone to live as missionaries in
a far off land, or added on to their
house in order to care for an aging
parent are all examples to me of
those who answer the call without
coun&ng the cost.
I am not concerned with not being
able to follow the examples of
these stewardship heroes. What
concerns me is becoming too com-
fortable and not no&cing the Laza-
rus that may be in my midst. Living
a life of Everyday Stewardship
means not only answering the call
when it is obvious and when we
have the chance to truly do some-
thing amazing, but also when it is
less obvious and the need not as
easily no&ceable. Who doesn't
want to help the starving child they
see on a late night infomercial? But
the sad reality is that some&mes
there are children lying at our pro-
verbial door that fail to gain our
a$en&on.
So, I pray to see with the eyes of
Jesus. I ask that I may be ever more
mindful of those in need who cross
my path. I pray to see Jesus in
them. I pray to be Jesus to them. I
pray that I may answer the call.

CYCLE C SEPTEMBER 25, 2016
26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"'My child, remember that you
received what was good during
your lifetime while Lazarus like-
wise received what was bad.'" To-
day's Gospel reading is Jesus' par-
able about a "rich man," whose
name we do not know, and a
"poor man," named Lazarus. The
story shows both men after death,
the rich man in torment, and Laza-
rus enjoying the comfort that he
was deprived of during his earthly
life.
It's important to understand that
this teaching does not imply that
having wealth leads to eternal
punishment. Rather, we look at
how the rich man USED his wealth
and see there the cause of the
problem. As Jesus says, this man
"dressed in purple garments and
fine linen and dined sumptuously
each day." Clearly, he had abun-
dant wealth and focused it all up-
on serving himself. To further the
accusation against him, all the
while "lying at his door was a poor
man ... who would gladly have
eaten his fill of the scraps that fell
from the rich man's table." But
the rich man paid Lazarus no
heed, and THIS is why he now suf-
fers. Because he would not deign
to "suffer" at all during his life by
sharing his linen clothing or feed-
ing his poor neighbor covered
with sores.
This selfishness became the rich
man's SELF-condemnation. He put
himself in torment because he
blatantly disobeyed God's law to
love his neighbor. This challenging
parable urges us to examine our
own behavior and ask how WE use
our wealth--whatever size our
bank account may be. Are we will-
ing to assist our neighbors in
need? Or do we walk by the poor,
excusing our own comfort? Let us
heed Christ's warning today that
such earthly comforts are, in the
long run, short-lived.

“Far too many Catholics are not familiar with the
basic content of Catholic social teaching. More fun-
damentally, many Catholics do not adequately un-
derstand that the social teaching of the Church is an
essen!al part of Catholic faith. This poses a serious
challenge for all Catholics, since it weakens our ca-
pacity to be a Church that is true to the demands of
the Gospel.” from USCCB.ORG
RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
US policy should promote reli-gious liberty vigorously, both at home and abroad: our first and most cherished freedom is rooted in the very dignity of the human person, a fundamental human right that knows no geographical boundaries. In all contexts, its basic contours are the same: it is the "immun[ity] from coercion on the part of individuals or of social groups and of any human power, in such wise that no one is to be forced to act in a manner contrary to his own beliefs, whether pri-vately or publicly, whether alone or in association with others, with-in due limits." (Dignitatis Hu-manae, no. 2). In the United States, religious freedom general-ly enjoys strong protection in our law and culture, but those protec-tions are now in doubt. For exam-ple, the longstanding tax exemp-tion of the Church has been ex-plicitly called into question at the highest levels of government, pre-cisely because of her teachings on marriage. Catholics have a particular duty to make sure that protections like these do not weaken but instead grow in strength. This is not only to se-cure the just freedom of the Church and the faithful here but also to offer hope and an encour-aging witness to those who suffer direct and even violent religious persecution in countries where
the protection is far weaker.
