Jayhawk Talk Jayhawk Talk Jayhawk Talk Online Online Online With Valentine’s Day in February, the heart is already in the forefront of everyone’s minds. It only makes sense for February to be American Heart Month as well. Programs across the nation will get to the heart of the matter with the goals of education about and prevention of heart disease. One major heart initiative in February is the American Heart Association’s “Go Red for Women” campaign. Heart disease kills one in three women (approximately one every minute!) each year, and this initiative wants to set the facts straight about the misconceptions of heart disease in women. Using the tools on the “Go Red for Women” website, you can assess your risk factors, learn ways to become more heart healthy, and read stories from heart disease survivors. Learn how to be “one in a million” this Heart Month with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Million Hearts TM Initiative. Launched in Sept. 2011, it is a collaboration of the CDC and the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services with the goal of preventing 1 million heart attacks and strokes by the end of 2016. If you are looking for something a little closer to home, the Wichita chapter of the American Heart Association will host its Wichita Heart Ball on Saturday, Feb. 16. Are you a survivor of heart disease or stroke? Do you know someone who is? Have you lost a loved one to cardiovascular disease? The American Heart Association wants to honor survivors and remember those lost by including photos and names in a special PowerPoint presentation at the Ball. If you’d like to be included, e-mail [email protected] to submit a photo, name, and brief details about the individual. To learn more about this opportunity or about how to attend the Ball, call (316) 265-4238. Robert “Bob” Knuth has been hired by KU Endowment as the Development Director, School of Medicine–Wichita, effective Thursday, Feb. 14. Bob joins us from The Blake School in Minneapolis, Minn., where he was the Director of Institutional Advancement. We’re looking forward to Bob’s arrival!

Do you know what to do if a fire alarm sounds while you are on campus? Every fall, we conduct an annual fire drill to ensure that everyone on campus knows what action to take in the event of a fire. Unfortunately, many people are not on campus when we do these drills and they are losing out on information that is very valuable. Each department has assigned floor monitors who are responsible for assisting in evacuating their work areas when the fire alarm sounds. The floor monitors wear a distinctive orange vest for identification during an

emergency (or drill). Employees should make themselves aware of the possible evacuation routes from their work areas. Keep in mind, when the fire alarms sounds, the elevators will not work. Additionally, you should look for alternative routes out of the building before there is a fire or other emergency evacuation ordered, in case your normal evacuation route is blocked. Also, look for evacuation routes from other areas on campus you may visit regularly. Once outside the building, you should to go to your department’s designated evacuation site (if possible) so that you can be accounted for. If you are separated from your department during an evacuation, contact the floor monitor at the evacuation site where you are located so they can account for you. For more information concerning fire safety, visit the Facilities Management website.

The outgoing mailbox located in the lobby is no longer in use. But, you may have noticed that it hasn’t been removed. If you’ve tried putting a letter in it, you’ve discovered that the mail slot has been permanently sealed. Instead of removing the box from campus, the postal service has decided to leave it, in its disabled state. So, from here on out, it can be considered campus art.

The second-year class has created a publicly available Facebook page to educate teens and young adults about the value of immunization against human papillomavirus. The page was created in response to a class assignment on how to communicate effectively with young patients who have little or no knowledge of basic biology. The creative artwork, graphics, and text are all the work of this group of eight imaginative students.
