Message from the Artistic and Executive Director on behalf of thePresident, Chairman, and Board of Directors – Vancouver KiwanisMusic Festivals Society (VKMFS) Welcome to the 95th year of ‘Inspiring Musical Excellence’!Congratulations to everyone involved for their accomplishments and

commitment. The results of many hours of dedicated practice, discipline,focus, and investment will be showcased by the performers and leaders atthis year’s Jazz Band Festival.Our 2018 adjudicators are Dr. David Branter, Mr. Michael Perkins, and Mr.

Bob Rebagliati. They will provide valuable feedback, wisdom, andencouragement to more than 280 participating musicians. We invite you toread more about our adjudicators’ lifelong devotion to music education inthe following pages of your program book.The supporters and partners of the VKMFS have created the important

Vancouver Kiwanis Music Festivals Philosophy• To provide a festival that is student and director oriented;• To operate a festival that is musically and educationally focused;• To provide an environment and atmosphere for an exchange of musicperformance, listening, sharing and working together;

• To provide excellent performance examples which groups may strive toemulate.

Evaluation• All groups will be performing to a standard of excellence. A detaileddescriptor evaluation sheet shall be used by the adjudicators to indicatethe group’s performance. Each group will receive a certificate ofperformance/participation.

• Each group will receive a taped/written evaluation and a clinic with one ofthe adjudicators. Performances and clinics will be held in separate rooms.

• Each group will perform repertoire of the Director’s choice, performing amaximum of three selections.

• Music should represent the level and abilities of the group and shouldreflect the process of quality music education.

Dr. David BranterSaxophone

Dr. David Branter, currently Department Head at theVCC School of Music, performs as both a classical andjazz saxophonist. Dr. Branter performed the worldpremiere of John Oliver’s Cha$e the Money in July of2003 in Minneapolis and performed the work again withthe Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in April 2004. Heperforms regularly with jazz groups led by AlanMatheson, including the CBC Jazz Orchestra, and is

featured on Matheson’s newly released CD Intrada. Dr. Branter also playssoprano saxophone with the saxophone quartet Saxophilia. Saxophilia,established in 1996, has premiered works by Derek Charke, John Burke andothers, but has a wide ranging repertoire including French works theyperformed in 2007 for a CBC Radio broadcast. Dr. Branter is also saxophonist for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. In2007 he began to perform for Colin MacDonald’s Pocket Orchestra and theEast Vancouver Jazz Orchestra. He has also performed with John Korsrud’sHard Rubber Orchestra, including a concert in April 2009 featuring themusic of Louis Andriessen.Work as a conductor and band, jazz band and woodwind

adjudicator/clinician remain important activities. Dr. Branter participated inthe 2009 Cultural Olympiad as conductor of R. Murray Schafer’s Music forWilderness Lake for the Water’s Edge Festival. Dr. Branter directed,co-directed or co-produced four CDs; Midnight Sleigh Ride, Mazama, Festivoand Trajectories with the Pacific Symphonic Wind Ensemble and was, until2000, music director of that group. He premiered Fred Stride’s Caverns for tenor saxophone and band for their

invitational performance at the World Association of Symphonic Bands andEnsembles (WASBE) in July 2005 in Singapore.

Bob Rebagliati Clarinet, piano, percussion

Bob Rebagliati holds a Bachelor of Music degree, aTeaching Certificate from UBC, and a Master of Musicdegree from Western Washington University. While anundergraduate, Bob was involved in performances as aclarinettist, pianist and a percussionist. He writescurriculum in the areas of jazz rhythm section, jazzrehearsal techniques, jazz improvisation and concertband percussion.

For 33 years, in the North Vancouver School District, Mr. Rebagliatidirected many award winning junior and senior high school ensembles inboth concert band and jazz areas. As a music festival adjudicator andworkshop leader, Mr. Rebagliati has travelled throughout BC, Saskatchewan,Manitoba and Ontario. He is well known for sessions covering concertpercussion, jazz rhythm section, jazz interpretation, improvisation andrehearsal techniques. During the summer, Bob has been an active groupleader and teacher at music camps.At the 1991 BC Music Educators Conference, Mr. Rebagliati was

honoured with the annual Professional Educator Award. In December 1991,Bob was presented with a Distinguished Citizen Award by the District ofNorth Vancouver. In 1992, he was presented with a CANADA 125 medal byMary Collins, MP. In 1994, he received the North Vancouver MusicEducators’ Award of Excellence. In 2004, Bob received the Leadership InMusic Education Award from the Coalition For Music Education In BC “formany years of outstanding contributions to the music educationcommunity.” Bob holds memberships in the British Columbia Music Educators’

Association, Canadian Music Educators’ Association, British Columbia BandAssociation, Canadian Band Association, Coalition for Music Education inBC, Coalition For Music Education In Canada and Jazz Educators’ Network.Mr. Rebagliati is also Vice Chairman of Instrumental Jazz for MusicFest

Canada. Since 2005, Bob has auditioned the Vancouver Jazz Festival StudentBig Band for the annual TD Vancouver International Jazz Festival. EachAugust, Bob directs and teaches at the Douglas College Summer JazzIntensive.

Michael Perkins Trumpet

Michael Perkins has been a music educator andprofessional musician for over 40 years in both thepublic and private school systems. Having recentlyretired from teaching, Michael continues to be an activeperformer, clinician and adjudicator. He taughtsecondary school and directed many award-winningperformances.Michael currently performs as a freelance trumpet

player, clinician and adjudicator, working recently with the OkanaganSymphony, Kamloops Symphony, Michael Garding Big Band, BandidosCervesas, Nicola Valley Community Band, JG Jazz Quintet, Kelowna KiwanisMusic Festival, Okanagan Concert Band Festival and the BC Interior JazzFestival.

Scholarships and BursariesThe following scholarships and bursaries will be awarded at this year’sVancouver Kiwanis Jazz Festival:• Charter Member Scholarship – $200 for the most outstandingperformer in Senior Stage Band

• Dave Robbins Scholarship – $100 to the most outstandingtrombonist

• Vancouver Kiwanis Jazz Festival Scholarship – $100 to the mostinspiring jazz ensemble performance

• Berklee College of Music – four 50% discounts towards their fiveweek Summer Performance Program

• Douglas College – a $200 tuition bursary to the most outstandingrhythm section player, towards the Douglas College Summer JazzIntensive program

In addition, the TD Jazz Intensive and CYMC will contact Directorsregarding opportunities for summer performances and clinics. Thefestival also recommends groups to MusicFest.
