Pedal To The Metal “Pedal To The Metal” is a heavy-duty industrial

strength swinger by Hollywood & TV composer Lenny Stack. This chart features plenty of big band licks at a very brisk tempo and includes an awesome shout chorus with a few meter changes thrown in for good measure!

A Los Angeles native, Lenny Stack, has written arrangements for the Tonight Show Band of Doc Severinsen, The Buddy Rich Big Band, and the Louis Bellson Big Band. Lenny has composed original songs for recording artists including Diana Ross and Dionne Warwick. He has been musical director for many television series, specials, and motion pictures, and he received an Emmy Award for his arranging work on the “Screen Actor’s Guild 50th Anniversary Special.” There Is No Greater Love

"There Is No Greater Love" is a 1936 jazz standard composed by Isham Jones, with lyrics by Marty Symes. It was the last hit song for Jones's orchestra before the bandleader turned the orchestra over to Woody Herman. The song is often played as a ballad; however, this new setting by Eric Richards pays tribute to the master arrangers: Sammy Nestico and John Clayton.

This arrangement opens with one chorus of contrafact from a “small band” of alto, tenor, baritone, trumpet, and vibes followed by the rhythm section presenting the actual melody. The tune quickly opens up to hard hitting impact points and intertwining melodic lines before returning to a tranquil finish. When I Fall In Love

"When I Fall in Love" was written by Victor Young and contains lyrics by Edward Heyman. It was introduced in the film One Minute to Zero. Jeri Southern sang on the first recording released in April 1952 with the song's composer, Victor Young, handling the arranging and conducting duties. The song has become a standard, with many artists recording it, though the first hit version was sung by Doris Day released in July 1952.

Arranger, Alan Baylock writes, “Amazingly, this arrangement was premiered by the University of North Texas One O’clock Lab Band as an opener. The audience, expecting the standard high-fast-loud opener, was completely blown away by the band’s performance of this deeply pensive, evocative chart. “

Afro Blue Percussionist Mongo Santamaria's "Afro Blue" has

been one of the most widely interpreted pieces in the field of Latin Jazz, blending a melody, which simulates an African tribal chant, and driving Cuban rhythm. Santamaria initially recorded his piece in 1959 as a member of Cal Tjader's group in a live set at “Concerts by the Sea” before taping it himself just a few months later. Although many instrumental interpretations by other artists have been released by artists like Roland Kirk, McCoy Tyner, Steve Nelson and Emily Remler, John Coltrane's recordings for Impulse helped put the stamp of approval on the song, though the saxophonist was inexplicably credited as its composer on both of his Impulse albums which contained it.

Today’s performance will feature guest artist, Bob Rummage, on drums.

Big Dipper Recorded by the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra

on the Central Park North record, this classic swinger has all the Thad Jones-isms: Unexpected, interesting counter-parts, lots of solo space, and inventive sounds for those not playing lead. His ensemble voicings produce an impact that leaves the listener breathless.

Thad wrote his first jazz arrangement at age 13 when he was a trumpet player in his uncle's band along with brothers Hank (piano) and Elvin (drums). In the 1940's he served in the army, led a band of his own, and played with other bands before joining the Count Basie band in 1954. In 1965 Thad and drummer Mel Lewis formed their award-winning jazz orchestra. For the next 13 years this amazing band became an American jazz institution.

Today’s performance will feature guest artist, Jeff Helgesen, on trumpet.

Things Ain’t What They Used To Be In 1941, there was a strike against the American

Society of Composers Authors and Publishers, of which Duke Ellington was a member. Due to the strike, he could not air his compositions on the radio. Instead, he used songs written by his son Mercer and pianist Billy Strayhorn. Mercer wrote "Things Ain't What They Used to Be” in 1942 and his father then arranged the song for the band.

Arranger, Alan Baylock, currently holds the position of Chief Arranger for the renowned "Airmen of Note" jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force Band in Washington D.C. In addition, he is in demand as a freelance composer, arranger, producer, instrumentalist, clinician, and adjudicator, and is the leader of the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra.

Today’s performance will feature guest artist, Jeff Helgesen on trumpet.

EVANSTON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ PROGRAM

The Evanston Township High School JAZZ BAND, directed by Matthew P. Bufis, is the cadet big band at Evanston Township High School and is intended for developing jazz musicians. This group builds on and expands the fundamentals established in Lab Band while performing more advanced jazz literature and exploring improvisation more thoroughly. The Jazz Band performs multiple times per year, including several festival performances and local gigs.

The Evanston Township High School JAZZ LAB BAND, directed by Mr. Lehman, is our entry-level big band. No prior jazz experience is necessary; however, proficiency on your instrument is required. This group rehearses two days per week and emphasizes the fundamentals of tone production, ensemble sonority, jazz articulation, and beginning improvisation. The Jazz Lab Band performs several times throughout the year, including two festival performances.

JAZZ COMBOS at Evanston Township High School emphasize improvisation, jazz music theory, arranging, and composition. Jazz Combos are open to students in grades nine through twelve, and all members also participate in a big band. These groups perform many times throughout the year at festivals, gigs, as well as school and community functions.

Each spring the Evanston Township High School Jazz Program hosts a comprehensive jazz festival. Established in 2004 as a non-competitive, all-day jazz immersion event, the EVANSTON TOWNSHIP HIGH SCHOOL JAZZ FESTIVAL hosts nearly 50 middle and high school jazz groups from around the region. Students of all levels are inspired by professional musicians, enlightened by our clinics,

lectures, and master classes, and encouraged to take their playing to the next level. This educational and cultural jazz festival has earned its distinction by providing the opportunity to showcase local, national, and international artists. It is the mission of the Evanston Township High School Jazz Festival to provide an important supplement to the students’ pursuit of jazz by highlighting the enduring elements and important innovations of this distinctly American music. Paul Clarke I am a junior and this is my second year in the Jazz Ensemble. I started playing saxophone in fourth grade, but didn't get the chance to play jazz until the seventh grade in the Nichols Middle School Jazz Band. I liked it, but didn't initially realize the expressiveness of jazz and improvisation in particular. Now improvising and playing creative music are some of my absolute favorite things to do.

Jasper Davidoff I wasted no time jumping into a life of music; at the age of 5, I saw a children's choir and immediately insisted that I wanted to do that. I've been singing since then, as well as playing piano and sax. Since I came to ETHS two years ago I've been having lots of fun in a bunch of musicals, some other theatre, marching band, a cappella, and jazz! I'm so grateful to Mr. Lehman and the whole jazz faculty for giving me the opportunity to perform in Jazz Ensemble this year - it's been amazing to learn from the great range of what we play and from all of the extremely talented people whom I get to play with every week.

Noah Pearson I'm a senior in high school and I've been playing saxophone for 7 years. What made me want to play jazz was my first time listening to the Mingus Big Band play Moanin' for the first time. The idea of improvisation was captivating to me and I decided to pursue it. While I still play in the school Wind Symphony and learn classical sax rep on my own, jazz is the most appealing genre to me. I plan to become a music educator.

Thomas Wee I'm currently a junior and I've been playing jazz for about three years. My middle school band teacher, Mrs. Philbrick was my inspiration to start playing jazz; she handed me an alto saxophone one day in middle school and told me I should try it out and join the jazz band. I enjoy playing jazz because there is an amazing amount of room to express your own ideas and also to interpret old ideas in completely new ways. My hope is to continue playing jazz through the rest of high school and into college and hopefully even farther into the future.

Simon Lequar I am a sophomore and this is my second year in the Jazz Ensemble. I was first inspired to play jazz in 4th grade after hearing the high school band play a concert. I was finally able to start jazz in 6th grade, and I've been playing jazz ever since. My favorite jazz artists are Paul Desmond and Charlie Parker. In addition to jazz, I play in the Wind Symphony and the Marching Band, and I participate in the Math Team.

Sophia Hachten I am a sophomore, and I have been playing trumpet for over five years. I started playing in jazz band at school when I was in 6th grade, and I have been playing jazz ever since. I also play in the ETHS Wind Symphony and the ETHS Symphony Orchestra. Apart from music, I am a swimmer. In school, I am interested in math, science, and history.

Evan Foley I am a senior in high school, and this is my second year in the Jazz Ensemble. I have been playing trumpet since fifth grade. I enjoy every aspect of playing, from the social to the musical aspect. I plan to continue to play music in college, but plan to study economics. I am an Eagle Scout and an avid baseball player.

Seth Bearman I'm a senior and three-time member of the ETHS Jazz Ensemble. I'm a huge participant in the music programs at school, as well as an avid player outside of school. I started playing trumpet in the 4th grade, and since then have taught myself piano, guitar, harmonica, and several other instruments. I have an intense passion for playing music.

Adam Marquardt I’m a sophomore in the Evanston Jazz Ensemble, and I’ve been playing the trumpet for 8 years, jazz for about 4. I first started playing jazz in middle school, at the suggestion of my private instructor, and it became my primary musical interest. Jazz is easily my favorite music to play because of the power and history of the music. Playing jazz is a transition from pure technicality to more creativity. I also play in the Evanston Wind Symphony and sing in various vocal groups. I’m also involved in our school’s theater program, along with the speech and debate team.

Jazz Ensemble Members T R U M P E T S

Michael Werner I am a senior at ETHS and started playing the trumpet in kindergarten. My classical teacher inspired me to play jazz. I enjoy playing with others to create music that I couldn’t create on my own. After graduation I am taking a gap year to play music in the Chicago area and then I’m off to Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Ezra Brown I am currently a senior at ETHS. I began playing trombone in 4th grade and began playing jazz in 6th grade at Haven Middle School. I am inspired by the music of Frank Rosolino, Carl Fontana, and J.J. Johnson. I have been a member of the Marching Band, Pep band, the Jazz Ensemble, and Jazz Combos for all of my four years at ETHS. I am also a member of the Midwest Young Artists Symphony Orchestra. I look forward to continuing my pursuit of the many musical outlets offered at The University of Michigan next year.

Dorothy Greene My name is Dorothy Greene and I am a freshman. I started playing trombone in 4th grade, and I started playing jazz in 6th grade. I participate in Concert Band, Pep Band and Jazz Ensemble. I like being in Jazz Ensemble because of all the venues that we get to play at and the clinics we get to participate in. I also love photography, drawing and cross-country skiing.

Joey Parker I'm a senior and have been playing piano most of my life, but I started trombone in 4th grade and tuba in 6th. When I was about 10 years old, I saw the Willie Pickens Trio at the Jazz Showcase and it sparked my interest in jazz. Bass trombone, while not my primary instrument, is (in my opinion) the most exciting instrument in the band. You gotta love the honk! The thing I most like about playing jazz, however, is playing my primary instrument, piano, in a combo setting. I'm currently preparing for college auditions on jazz piano to be a jazz performance major. At school, I play in the Wind Symphony, Marching Band, Symphony Orchestra, and in a jazz combo. .

Zoe Ryan-Hubbard I am a senior at ETHS and I participate in our schools Jazz Ensemble, Wind Symphony, Marching band, Pit Orchestra, and our student written comedy show YAMO. I started playing trombone in 10th grade and Euphonium in 8th grade. I was inspired to learn how to play trombone so that I can participate in our schools jazz program because I love the amount of freedom that you have when you play jazz. There's so much emotion and interpretation that you can add when you play jazz music that you just can't find in classical music.

Elisabeth Finkel I’m currently a junior; I’ve been playing percussion since fourth grade, and classical piano for two years longer. I started drumming in middle school, but switched to vibraphone this year because I wanted to combine my love for jazz with my background in reading music—It’s challenging but very rewarding, since I like both the theory and the instrument. When I eventually graduate and go to college, I plan to major in a STEM field and minor in music, or possibly to double major if I’m feeling ambitious. Right now I’m on the math team and I participate in concert band, orchestra, marching band, pep band, and probably the school musical.

Lily Finnegan I am a senior at ETHS and this is my first year in the Jazz Ensemble. Playing music is my life's passion and how I express myself. I especially love playing jazz because of the improvisation and the interactions with other people through music. I can't wait to see where music takes me in my life and I don't plan on putting down the drumsticks anytime soon. .

Joey Bonansinga I am a junior and this is my second year in the Jazz Ensemble. I started playing rock on electric bass in 4th grade, and started playing classical upright in 6th grade. When I heard the older kids in my middle school perform in the jazz band, I knew I wanted to play jazz. I started playing jazz and funk in 7th grade, and jazz has been my passion ever since.

Jonah Karsh I am currently a sophomore at ETHS, and I have been playing piano since Kindergarten and clarinet since 4th grade. Jazz piano appeals so much to me because in my role in the band, I have freedom beyond notes on a page. This is part of the reason I want to study jazz piano in college and become a professional musician. In addition to Jazz Ensemble, I am part of the Jazz Combo program, play clarinet in the Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, and mentor five other students on piano and clarinet. Outside of music, I compete on the ETHS Scholastic Bowl (trivia) team.
