From the editor What is happening to Jazz Journal? Jon Hiseman, a convicted jazz-rocker, on the front cover, not to mention R&B mystic Graham Bond? Well, as Dave Gelly and Mike Tucker show in this issue, in interview and book review respectively, Hiseman strad- dled many styles from the beginning, moving from the New Jazz Orchestra to progressive rock with Colosseum and back to jazz with Paraphernalia. More importantly, his story, like that of many other players who came up in the 60s and later, illustrates per- fectly that jazz is a continuum washed this way and that by the sur- rounding culture. It was born a mon- grel and none of its forms has come into existence or thrived in a vacuum untouched by external influence. Humans like to name, categorise, sep- arate, almost always with imperfect results - how else can we order our world? But as far as musical judge- ment is concerned, perhaps our only sound criteria (to echo many a jazz great) can be “Do we hear freshness, do we hear communication, does it work?” History will look after the rest.
