    Southern Gospel originated in

    the 1800s and 1900s. It was a

    mix of Christian Gospel lyrics,with bluegrass, and jazz. This

    type of music was first sang by

    slaves in order to communicate

    with each other. But, as soon aschurches discovered this type of

    music, traveling preachers

    began to speak about it and

    many people, especially African

    Americans, took a liking to thisnew style of music. It soon

    became the most popular music

    in the South and its churches.

    A very popular song that slaves

    sang during the era of Southern

    Gospel was, Wade in the Water.

    This song was sung by slaves to

    convey what to do when running

    away from their masters. Back

    when slaves escaped, they did it

    during the night to make it difficultfor their masters to find them.

    However, the slave owners would

    get their hounds to hunt down and

    find the slaves using their scent.

    The song, Wade in the Water,was made to tell slaves that,

    when theyre attempting to run

    away, they should wade in the
