The Doug Talley Quartet, based in Kansas City, recreates that same excitement and verve for concert audiences of today. Talley is influenced strongly by such leg- ends as Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter, and has put together a quartet of musicians also studied in the ways of the masters. Learning from jazz history, this group expands the old parameters. The quar- tet breathes new life into standards and originals with colorful har- monies and strong rhythms, creating its own voice — a hall- mark of great acoustic jazz. And that is the “hook” of this group. The Doug Talley Quartet, with its straight- ahead, post-bop sound, is building its own tradition of Kansas City jazz, bringing America’s classical music into the 21st Century. THE QUARTETDoug Talley has performed with such jazz lumi-naries as Jay McShann, Bob Mintzer, Claude

“Fiddler” Williams, BobbyWatson, Randy Brecker andGary Foster. He is a familiar facethroughout the Midwest as ajazz performer and educator.

Talley is a Selmer saxophoneartist and clinician and hasappeared at numerous highschools and colleges, including theUniversity of Minnesota, Coe College(IA), Kansas State, Peru (NE) State,Central Missouri State, NorthwestMissouri State, Southeast OklahomaState, among many others. A faculty

member/clinician at the 2003 IAJETeacher’s Training Institute, and faculty member of the

Great Plains JazzCamp since 1988,Talley was fea-tured at the 1996MENC conventionin Kansas Citydirecting theShawnee Mission(KS) Honors JazzBand. He was aclinician at the1997 InternationalAssociation ofJazz Educators

conference in Chicago and honored by Kansas City mag-azine as one of the “40 Under 40 Who Move and ShakeKansas City in Business, Politics and the Arts.”

Wayne Hawkins, piano, is one of Kansas City’s mostin-demand keyboard artists, album producers and filmsound track composers. He has appeared with Grammyaward-winner Diane Schuur, and two-time Grammyaward winner Paquito D’Rivera, as well as the KansasCity Symphony

Tim Brewer, bass, is a graduate of the University ofMissouri-Kansas City. Tim is a gifted composer andperformer and has appeared with many artists, includ-ing Bobby Watson and Eddie Harris.

Keith Kavanaugh, drums, is a graduate of BerkleeCollege of Music in Boston. He has performedwith Diane Schuur, Phil Wilson, JoshuaBreakstone, Scott Robinson and many musi-cians on the Kansas City jazz scene.
