    Welcome to Jazz Vespers. For centuries, people have asked God for guidance and care as day turns to

    night. This night, we ask God to refresh, inspire, and call us to action. Enter into the songs, silence, and

    Scripture as you feel so moved. Breathe deep, be still, and know that you are beloved. May God bless you

    in this time of prayer.

    One: Let us pray.

    All: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace,

    who brings good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’ Listen! Your

    sentinels lift up their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to

    Zion. Break forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem;

    for the Lord has comforted the people, and has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has bared this holy arm

    before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see

    Jazz Meditation God Bless the Child

    Taize Chant: Bless the Lord, My Soul

    One: Let us Pray

    All: Forgiveness does not relieve someone of responsibility for what they have done. Forgiveness does

    not erase accountability. It is not about turning a blind eye or even turning the other cheek. It is not about

    letting someone off the hook or saying it is okay to do something monstrous. Forgiveness is simply about

    understanding that every one of us is both inherently good and inherently flawed. Within every hopeless

    situation and every seemingly hopeless person lies the possibility of transformation.

    Desmond Tutu

    Spiritual Song: Spirit of the Living God

    Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me (2x).

    Melt me, mold me, fill me, use me.

    Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

    Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 One: From now on, therefore,

    All: We regard no one from a human point of view; even though we once knew Christ from a human

    point of view, we know him no longer in that way. So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation:

    everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! All this is from God, who reconciled us

    to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was

    reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of

    reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we

    entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no

    sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

    An extended time of silence

    Night Prayer

    All: Lord, it is night. The night is for stillness. Let us be still in the presence of God. It is night after a

    long day. What has been done has been done; what has not been done has not been done. Let it be. The

    night is dark. Let our fears of the darkness of the world and of our own lives rest in you. The night is

    quiet. Let the quietness of your peace enfold us, all dear to us, and all who have no peace. The night

    heralds the dawn. Let us look expectantly to a new day, new possibilities. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen

    God Comes to Us as One Unknown

    Benediction

    One: Go out into the world in peace. Have courage, hold on to what is good. Return no one evil for evil.

    Strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, help the suffering, honor everyone. Love and serve God,

    rejoicing in the power of the Spirit. And may the blessing of Almighty God be with you now, and remain

    with you always. All: Amen.

    Blessing for the Journey: Go now, in peace. Amen.

    Postlude: Improvisation

    As ensemble in residence at the Washington National Cathedral, Theodicy Jazz Collective is committed

    to making justice real through the creative, spiritual power of music. The group believes that music has

    the power to promote understanding in society and that the jazz principles of community, flexibility, and

    listening can help the church thrive in our rapidly changing world. Inspired by jazz, blues, gospel,

    traditional hymns, and world music, Theodicy believes that the diverse cultures that gave rise to this

    music deserve utmost respect. And, because Jesus sought voices from the margins of society while

    embracing his own heritage, we seek to expand liturgical tradition without abandoning it. This worship is

    offered to the glory of God and with thanksgiving for the Episcopal Church in Minnesota.

    Morning Prayer

    Lake Superior, with Madeline Island in the distance.

    Prelude: Maiden Voyage by Herbie Hancock

    The congregation stands. One: Lord, Open our lips. All: And our mouth shall proclaim your praise. Glory to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God. As it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. One: Let us pray. All: How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who announces peace, who brings

    good news, who announces salvation, who says to Zion, ‘Your God reigns.’ Listen! Your sentinels lift up

    their voices, together they sing for joy; for in plain sight they see the return of the Lord to Zion. Break

    forth together into singing, you ruins of Jerusalem; for the Lord has comforted the people, and has

    redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has bared this holy arm before the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends

    of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. (From the 52nd Chapter of Isaiah).

    One: Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid,

    cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you

    and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ our Lord.

    All: Amen.

    One: Dear people of God, for whom and for what do we pray?

    All: A time of open prayer, both spoken and silent.

    When the time is right, the congregation prays the Lord’s prayer, using the words closest to the heart.

    Psalm 24

    One: The earth is the Lord’s

    All: And all that is in it, the world, and those who live within it; For God has founded it on the seas, and

    established it on the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in this holy place?

    Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false, and do not

    swear deceitfully. They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their

    salvation. Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

    gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord,

    it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of

    Noonday Prayer

    Dwelling in the Word: Psalm 104: 13-19, 24-30, 33-34

    O God how many are your works. In wisdom you made them all. You set the earth on its foundations, so

    that it shall never be shaken. The earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work. You cause the grass to

    grow for the cattle, and the plants for people to use, to bring forth food from the earth, and wine to

    gladden the human heart, And bread to strengthen the human heart. You have made the moon to mark the

    seasons; The sun knows its time for setting. The earth is full of your creatures.

    Yonder is the sea, great and wide, Creeping things are innumerable there, living things, both great and

    small. We all look to you to give us food in due season. When you give to them they gather it up; when

    you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

    Love One Another

    A Reading from the Gospel of John (13:12-15, 34-35) All: After Jesus had washed their feet, had put on his robe, and had returned to the table, he said to them, ‘Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord—and you are right, for that is what I am. 14So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you. Sung Response All: Jesus said, “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Sung Response

    Morning Prayer

    Prelude: Improvisations

    Opening Hymn: Love One Another

    The congregation stands

    One: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

    All: Let the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, our strength

    and redeemer.

    One: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

    An extended time of silence (standing or kneeling)

    One: Most merciful God,

    All: we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.

    We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we

    may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

    One: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all our sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in

    all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

    All: Amen

    Leader: Lord, open our lips.

    All: And our mouths shall proclaim your praise: Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit:

    as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

    Psalm 95

    All: [Antiphon] The earth is the Lord’s in its beauty and holiness: Come let us worship the Lord.

    All: Come, let us sing to the Lord; let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before

    God’s presence with thanksgiving and raise a loud shout with psalms.

    For in God’s hand are the caverns of the earth, and the heights of the hills. The sea belongs to the Lord,

    the one who has made it, whose hands have molded the dry land.

    Come, let us bow down, and bend the knee, and kneel before the Lord our Maker. We are the people of

    the pasture and the sheep of God’s hand. Oh that today you would hearken to this voice.

    All: [Antiphon] The earth is the Lord’s in its beauty and holiness: Come let us worship the Lord.

    Dwelling in the Word: Mark 8

    In those days when there was again a great crowd without anything to eat, he called his disciples and said

    to them, ‘I have compassion for the crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have

    nothing to eat. If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way—and some of them

    have come from a great distance.’ His disciples replied, ‘How can one feed these people with bread here

    in the desert?’ He asked them, ‘How many loaves do you have?’ They said, ‘Seven.’ Then he ordered the

    crowd to sit down on the ground; and he took the seven loaves, and after giving thanks he broke them and

    gave them to his disciples to distribute; and they distributed them to the crowd. They had also a few small

    fish; and after blessing them, he ordered that these too should be distributed. They ate and were filled; and

    they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full.

    At the conclusion of the conversation,

    One: The Word of the Lord.

    All: Thanks be to God.

    The congregation stands.

    Prayers and Suffrages

    Sung Prayer Response:

    Hear our prayer, hear our prayer, hear us holy one.

    Hear our prayer, hear our cry, hosanna.

    One: Show us your mercy, O Lord;

    All: And grant us your salvation.

    One: Clothe your ministers with righteousness;

    All: Let your people sing with joy.

    One: Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;

    All: For only in you can we live in safety.

    One: Lord, keep this nation under your care;

    All: And guide us in the way of justice and truth.

    One: Let your way be known upon earth;

    All: Your saving health among all nations.

    One: Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;

    All: Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.

    One: Create in us clean hearts, O God;

    All: And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

    Sung Prayer Response:

    Hear our prayer, hear our prayer, hear us holy one.

    Hear our prayer, hear our cry, hosanna.

    One: God, the author of peace and lover of concord, to know you is eternal life and to serve you is perfect

    freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your

    defense, may not fear the power of any adversaries; through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. God, you

    have made us one, all peoples of the earth: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you.

    All: Amen.

    Sung Prayer Response…

    One: Creator God, you have given us grace and promised that when two or three are gathered together in

    Christ’s name you will be in the midst of them. Grant us in this world knowledge of your truth.

    All: Amen. Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine:

    Glory to God from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen

    One: Let us bless the Lord

    And also with you.

    Bishop Prior offers a collect and the people respond, Amen.

    The people are seated for the reading and psalm.

    Lesson: Genesis 1:26-31

    Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image, according to our likeness; and let them have dominion over

    the fish of the sea, and over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the wild animals of the earth, and

    over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.’
 So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.
 God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the air

    and over every living thing that moves upon the earth.’ God said, ‘See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every

    beast of the earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the

    breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.’ And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and

    indeed, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

    A period of silence follows the reading.

    Hear what the Spirit is saying to God’s people.

    Thanks be to God.

    Psalm 24

    The people recite the psalm verses.

    The Earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it, the world, and those who live within it; For God has founded it

    on the seas, and established it on the rivers. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in

    this holy place? Those who have clean hands and pure hearts, who do not lift up their souls to what is false,

    and do not swear deceitfully. They will receive blessing from the Lord, and vindication from the God of their

    salvation. Such is the company of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob.

    The people repeat the sung antiphon.

    The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

    Glory to you, Lord Christ.

    Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the

    kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I

    was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and

    you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” Then the

    righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and

    gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked

    and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” And the king

    will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my

    family, you did it to me.”

    The Gospel of the Lord.

    Praise to you, Lord Christ.

    Homily: The Rt. Rev. Brian Prior

    The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. Of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God,

  • 26

    Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

    The Prayers of the People

    Sung:

    Hear our prayer, hear our prayer, hear us, holy one.

    Hear our prayer, hear our cry, hosanna!

    Spoken:

    Show us your mercy, O Lord;

    And grant us your salvation.

    Clothe your ministers with righteousness;

    Let your people sing with joy.

    Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;

    Lord, keep this nation under your care;

    Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;

    The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them unto the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give God thanks and praise.

    Bishop Prior offers our thanks to God for the grace and mercy made available to us in Christ, and in

    response we sing:

    Bishop Prior gives thanks to God for the reconciling work of Christ’s passion and resurrection and prays over the bread and wine.

    Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever.

    Post Communion Prayer Almighty and ever living God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.
