916 2916.— Hand Tools— Co-ordination of Common User Types

(N.S. 35673/43.— 17 Feb. 1944.)

A Co-ordinating Committee representing all Government Departments concerned has now issued a Schedule of common user and other hand tools of trade patterns used by the Admiralty, War Office, Air Ministry, Royal Ordnance Factories, and General Post Office.

2. Of the tools considered about five hundred were eliminated as a war-time measure to facilitate production, either because they were duplicates of other tools in use, or were o f sizes not in common trade supply.

3. In preparing the Schedule, the Committee was guided by the following considerations :—

(а) that the designation should be that commonly used by the trade, orshould describe the tool in such a manner as to leave no doubt as to its purpose, size or shape.

(б) that size ranges o f tools in normal trade supply should conform withcivilian trade or war utility ranges.

(c) that unessential polishing and finishing should be eliminated.

4. Copies of the Co-ordinated Schedule have been distributed to all Dockyards and R.N. Store Depots.

5. Appendix (a ) to this Order shows the co-ordinated tools and indicates, where applicable, the equivalent Rate Book Pattern numbers. Where a Rate Book pattern is shown in parenthesis the Directorate o f Hand Tools’ pattern is the nearest tool now obtainable.

6. Appendix (6) shows the Rate Book items of which no further purchases will be made. No co-ordinated patterns or alternatives are available.

7. Appendix (c) shows the major changes of designation. In addition, the designation of spanners and wrenches has been changed in some cases.

8. The Rate Book patterns which are not mentioned in the appendices are not affected by these changes.

9. All future purchases of co-ordinated patterns will be made under the Director of Hand Tools’ co-ordinated numbers and descriptions. Deliveries should be taken on charge and accounted for under the new numbers, etc., which should be shown by ships, etc., when demanding requirements. Items shown in appendix(a) which have no previous Admiralty pattern number are not to be demanded unless instructions concerning individual patterns are issued subsequently.

10. This Order does not cover Tool K it tools of the 8000 series of pattern numbers shown in A.F.O. 1414/43 for R.N. Air Personnel, or R.A.F. pattern tools as used for naval aircraft purposes. A further Order concerning these will be issued in due course.

11. The Authorised List of Naval Stores and the Establishments of Naval Stores concerned will be amended.
