Honors Program students helped to distribute eclipse viewing glasses as well as Moon Pies, Sun Chips and information sheets to onlookers in the Commons Courtyard. SOLAR ECLIPSE

HEART TO HEART

On Sept. 19, Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa students participated in a hygiene kit packaging event to benefit 2017 hurricane victims. Kits were sent to victims of Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Irma.

PUMPKIN CARVING

On Oct. 25 in the Commons Courtyard, the Honors Student Association, Phi Theta Kappa, CLEAR and All-In clubs co-hosted the annual Pumpkin Carving Event in preparation for Halloween. Pictured are students with their pumpkin creations.

EMPORIA HONORS CONNECTIONS CONFERENCEHonors students traveled to Emporia, KS on October 28th to represent JCCC at the Honors Connections Conference. Honors Program Students presented as well as watched other presentations, participated in activities.

DUTCH VISITOR LUNCHEONHonors Program students hosted a luncheon on Oct. 21 for exchange program visitors from the Netherlands. It was a great opportunity for students to learn about Dutch culture while enjoying authentic Dutch food.

LACE UP FOR LEARNINGOn Oct. 15, Phi Theta Kappa members participated in the fifth annual 5K run-walk, with proceeds benefitting student scholarships.

PHI THETA KAPPA LEADERSHIP CONFERENCEPhi Theta Kappa members attended the Leadership Conference at Kansas City Kansas Community College Sept. 22 and 23.

TRICK OR TREATThe Honors Student Association and PTK hosted a booth, featuring a Toss the Brain game, at the annual JCCC Trick-or-Treating Event hosted by Student Life. Families from the Johnson County Community were invited to come to a safe place for treats and games. Honors student Maria Martinez

ROCKETING TO NASA: JACK CONNERSHonors student Jack Conners participated in NASA’s Community College Aerospace Scholars Program. The culmination of the program was a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center Sept. 26 to 29, where Jack worked with a team to design, build and present a Mars rover in a competition with other teams. Jack had the opportunity to meet NASA engineers, learn about careers in engineering, and work with NASA employees and other students attending the program.

Jack specializes in astrophysics, and enjoys collaborating with other students with similar interests.

PEACE CONFERENCEOn Nov. 3 at Park University, Alejandro Mendoza presented a poster on Jorge Ramos and how he is “Bringing Peace into the Latino Community”. When asked about what Jorge Ramos brings to the community and why he decided to present this topic, Alejandro states that “He inspires me because he continually finds solutions toward the Latino community crisis... the servant leadership that Jorge Ramos displays is an excellent example of the leadership qualities a person should have.” Alejandro, like many of the Honors students, is involved in the Honors Leadership Course, and uses what he has learned about behavioral theories and servant leadership as it relates to Ramos’ work.

Graham Murphy presented his poster on Flint, Michigan, titled “A Journey to Flint, Michigan”.

In addition, Graham participated in the Kansas City One Health Day at the Kansas State University campus in Olathe, Kansas, on Nov. 1. Graham presented on his trip to the town of Flint and the pollution dangers he witnessed. Graham received the Undergraduate Poster Award for his work.

USED BOOK SALEThe Honors Program and Phi Theta Kappa student held a Used Book Sale Oct. 9 to 13 to raise money for student scholarships.

WASTE AUDITHonors students participated in a campus Waste Audit on August 25th, as part of a service project organized by Honors Program student Erin Kruse with assistance from Sanam Bezanson and Karen Rivera-Cobian.
