MEET KATE SENTER Get to know the 2014 JCI UK

President

JCI London Issue 7 July 2014 5

Name: Kate Senter

JCI position: JCI UK National President

Why and when did you get involved in JCI: I joined JCI in September 2008, thanks to a friend suggesting I attend an open night for po-tential members to find out more. Within a mat-ter of weeks I was signing up for the 2009 local council team and it’s been non-stop from there!

Occupation: Senior Internal Communications Manager at GlaxoSmithKline

Biggest Personal Achievement: Completing my first marathon – I was never sporty when I was younger but have found a passion for pushing my mind and body beyond its limits. Describe JCI in three words: Passion, friendship, impact

Describe yourself in three words: Determined, open-minded, enthusiastic

Favorite inspirational quote: “The miracle isn’t that I finished. The miracle is that I had the courage to start” – John Bing-ham. It applies in all aspects of life

Do you haev a funny/inspirational story that you want to share? In 2013 I was fortunate enough to go attend the JCI Acadamy in Fukuyama, Japan. This is an academy for incoming National Presidents from all over the world and as part of the ex-perience, we visited an elementary school. The

children had been planning our visit for some time and had made posters with our pictures on and lots of facts about our home country – it was surreal to walk into a school on the other side of the workd and be greeted by your face! During the visit we had a buddy to look after us – my buddy was a fabulously cheeky young man of 8 years of age. Although we couldn’t communicate verbally, we got on famously and the language barrier was forgotten. Later that week we saw the children again as we took part in a treasure hunt. My buddy raced down the street, waving a crammed plastic bag full of what looked like bits of coloured paper. The teacher explained that he had spent all week making paper cranes so he could give to me as they are a sign of happiness, peace and luck. I carry one of the cranes in my wallet, to remem-ber everything I learnt from my Japanese hosts and buddy.

What is most rewarding about being part of JCI and taking on a leadership position? It’s funny, when you start on the leadership journey in JCI, you start off by thinking about how you will develop and what you will learn. The further along the journey, you realise that the most rewarding part of being given such an opportunity is the privilege of being part of development journey of others. This is why, af-ter 6 years, I continue to get excited about our organisation.

Why is JCI worth your time? I would absolutely not be where I am today without JCI. Personally, I was the always the girl at the back of the room...hiding in the toilets to wait until the speaker had started so I could sneak in without having the torture of having to

Page 6: JCI London Magazine July 2014

speak to people I didn’t know. Professionally, I was happy but couldn’t really see a way to get new experiences out-side the remit of my role and I could only see a long slow trudge up the career ladder.

JCI tipped all of this on its head. The person I am today is unrecognisable and through the opportunities I have had, I am confident, I have self belief and I no longer dread walking into a room of strangers! Professionally, I have moved leaps and bounds to where I am now and my current employer is quite open in saying that it was the leadership experiences that I had gained through JCI that got me through the door for an interview...enabling me to showcase all the other skills JCI has allowed me to develop!

The JCI UK Annual General Meeting (AGM) is going to happen very soon in September. Tell us what is JCI UK AGM all about? The AGM is a flagship national event which brings to-gether all of our local presidents and deputies to national council – the meeting where decisions about how we run JCI UK are taken. Local presidents have an important job to do in representing their members and shaping the fu-ture of our organisation. During this meeting we will hold the AGM which will see a number of the 2015 team elect-ed – it’s very exciting! The incoming National President will give a speech about the year ahead and it’s a great way to speak to those who will be on the team next year....or even talk to them about joining them!

Tell us why JCI London members should attend JCI UK AGM this year? We would love to have members attending this event – as spectators, you will have the privileged position of watch-ing how our national council meeting plays out, hear first-hand about the changes that are being made and hope-fully, be inspired to consider taking roles at a local or national level! After the formalities (and a spot of lunch), our Community Director, Katie Ogley will be presenting all of the sunglasses collected as part of Shade Aid to the Flamingo Foundation and we will also have a planning forum – come and feed in to the 2015 plan of action! As if that isn’t enough, JCI Southampton are also hosting their 50thAnniversary Gala Dinner! So get you glad rags on and come and join us for a corker of a weekend!

PEACE DAy 2014 We all put our differences aside, come togeth-er to celebrate and promote peace, for one day, then two days, then always! September 21st is World Peace Day. A day that promotes Peace all over the world with temporary ceasefires in combat zones to allow humanitarian help. In Afghanistan from 2007 to 2010 Peace One Day and the United Nations were able to stop the ongoing conflicts and vaccinate over 4.2 million children. This day is not only a way to promote Peace all over the world, but it can easily become a way to reach out and to experience what Peace can to/do. The motto or better to say the ques-tion JCI London is asking that day is: “Who will you make Peace with?”. What exactly did we plan? Well it is a day filled with Peace. In the morning there will be a

conference at UCL with amazing speakers that work around Peace. Such as Camilla Schip-pa, Director of the Institute for Economics and Peace who will answer the question “What We Can Learn From Measuring Peace” or Nairy McMahon & Dorothy Atcheson from CRR Global with their talk about “Connecting from Peace”. But the conference is not all that we have planned. There is going to be a flashmob at Trafalgar Square (watch video from last year: http://bit.ly/1nRYAFS) as well as many Human Peace symbols with free style dance across the world. The team has already man-aged to get 53 countries to participate and we aim to get all of the JCI countries involved. Last year the conference already managed to spread the world about peace and we had the Olympic drummers involved. This year we will make it even bigger with your help - spread the word and get involved!

Watch Jeremy Gilley, Founder of Peace One Day message to JCI at Global Partnership Summit 2014 in New York on YouTubehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2eldL9D-ju_Q&channel=JCILondon WHAT IS PEACE ONE DAY & HOW DID IT START? Well as a lot of things, it started with one per-son, Jeremy Gilley an actor turned filmmaker, who in the late 1990s became preoccupied with the issue of peace. He decided to explore these through the medium of filmmaking, and specifically, to create a documentary following his campaign to establish an annual day of ceasefire and non-violence. In 1999, Jeremy founded Peace One Day, a non-profit organisation, and in 2001 Peace One Day’s efforts were rewarded when the Member States of the United Nations unani-

mously adopted the first ever annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence on 21 Sep-tember – Peace Day.Inspired by him and the organization that Jer-emy has started, JCI London wanted to do its part as well and join Peace One Day as a part-ner to help them promote Peace. We just felt it was a perfect fit - JCI is an international organ-ization and as such one chapter can reach out easily and start a dialogue with fellow Jaycees all over the world. Last year with only a little team and a short amount of preparation 5 JCI chapters from Eu-rope and Africa got involved. Building on what we started last year, with longer preparation time and a larger team JCI London aims to in-volve Chapters in 100 countries to participate, to raise awareness for peace at an internation-al level! We need your help to spread the message of peace! What are you waiting for?

There are the countries that already joined the flashmob and the talk around Peace - follow the map as it grows: https://mapsengine.google.com/map/u/0/edit?mid=z-X6n8VBKzvA.kSSCblqITvKo

THe peacemakers - meet the team

Having grown up in post world war era, I think a lot of people (including myself) are quite ignorant about war and what we can do about it. In fact, conflicts at home or at work are like little war zones around us and we always have a choice who we want to make peace with. Peace to me is not about having one voice for all but allowing diffe-rent voices with mutual respect. By involving in this project, I hope I can raise the awareness of peace day and bring more people to make peace around them. - Winnie

I joined the Peace Day team because I wanted to continue the Peace Day effort from 2013, I loved being involved last year and felt that we could repeat the project in a bigger and better format, in 2014. fingers crossed that we do :-) - Matt

I believe peace is necessary for progress, respect of human rights and happiness. In developed countries like the UK, we have the chance to enjoy peace. Unfortunately this is not the case for many of our human fellows in several countries, notably in Africa, The Middle East, Eastern Europe, etc. Pe-ace should become widespread to the entire world. I dre-am of a day when peace will be prevalent and war will only be mentioned in history books. This will happen one day, it might take time but it will happen. JCI London‘s involvement to raise awareness about peace and Peace One Day is our modest contribution to the advancement of this ideal! May everybody on earth live in peace and let‘s all work toward that worthwhile goal! - Rafael

we aked them why they got involved and

why they believe Peace one day is important

December 2013 I have first heard of JCI from a dear friend Ko Barclay. Peace Day Project instantly caught my eye and I de-cided to commit my time and energy to help event organizers to make it happen for a second year. I have always been very passionate about justice, Human Rights and peace in the world. I cannot begin to describe how insanely powerful Peace day event is and benefits it is bringing not only to me, as an organizer, but also to people who will be attending the event. Our today‘s society is very egoistical and sometimes it forgets what is truly import-ant. Therefore, It is truly refreshing to be a part of. something bigger than yourself. - Egle

Peace one day project helps to raise awareness about cur-rent affairs and reminds that we all need to take a step forward towards peace. Every single one of us can contri-bute to finding solutions to major conflicts. We have power in our hands, we have media, we can access all sorts of information, we can make decisions and spread the right message that would help to make a ceasefire in all coun-tries for good. This is a long way, but with POD we have the ability to save lives, protect the vulnerable and the more people join this project the bigger power we have against fighting structures. Let‘s start from where we stand right here, right now. - Ilona

I’m on my way home after one of my most interesting evenings I have had in JCI, I’m not sure how Soraya and Rafael managed to fit everything into the session but it was a fantastic event.

In traditional JCI London style the event was both educational and interactive The event began with an introduction to JCI, its history, its core beliefs and some interesting facts. I was amazed to find out JCI has over 200,00 members in over 100 countries

Rafael Tselikas JCI London Training Director

Next up Soraya the current JCI London Deputy President told us her story. She has had the op-portunity to make new friends, learn new skills, travel to different countries and meet Tim Camp-bell(MBE) the first winner of the TV show The Apprentice.

Then came the interactive part, a series of leadership quotes were placed all around the room and we were asked to stand next to one we felt most defined our idea of good leadership, all the quotes were impressive but we you could only choose one and then share with the group our thoughts and experiences on leadership.

LEADERSHIP Take the lead, have fun and achieve!

Page 15: JCI London Magazine July 2014

JCI London Issue 7 July 2014 15

Andy sharing his leadership thoughts

Finally we went thru all the various positions on the partnership which all members will be encour-aged to put themselves forward for when the board elections come up later this year. You will be interested to know that you don’t necessarily need to have the experience for a particular partner-ship role just a passion for whatever it is you want to do. Don’t despair if you couldn’t make it to this event as this is the first of a series of events covering the leadership roles in JCI London. Keep your eyes open for more events coming up soon, where you can learn all about how JCI London can help you develop your leadership skills.

Remember the difference between

a boss and a leader; a boss says “Go!”

a leader says “Let’s Go!”

JCI World conGress 2014 Two tell us why they have registered to attend World Congress in Leipzig in November.

Rafael Tselikas

1) Have you ever attended a World Congress or another JCI conference before?

I have attended the JCI European Congress in Monaco in 2013 but not yet a World Congress!

2) Why are you going?

I am going to experience the international side of JCI, meet new friends, attend great trainings and much more!

3) What are your expectations? Are you look-ing forward to something in particular?

I really look forward to meet JCI Members from other countries, discuss about the projects they are running, share experiences. I also look for-ward to the training sessions, the various work-shops and the community engagement activity.

Page 17: JCI London Magazine July 2014

Svenja Koeppe

1) Have you ever attended a World Congress or another JCI conference before?

Yes I have my first ever international event was the World Congress in Brussels 2011 - it really made me realise how big the JCI community is and what kind of impact we have! Something people tell you often is that you will get addicted to conferences and it is true. Since then I was at at least one conference each year. One of the best was the World Congress and also really good was the Americas Conference in St. Louis where JCI was founded.

2) Why are you going?

I am as I said kind of a junkie when it comes to conferences because the atmosphere, the peo-ple and the programme are just great. It is al-ways fun and there are so many new people to meet. I am also going because I am German and it is only the second World Congress in Germany since 1981 in Berlin and we Germans are known for good conferences and parties in JCI.

3) What are your expectations? Are you look-ing forward to something in particular?

Even though I am German I have never been to Leipzig so getting to know the city a bit through the programme is what I am looking forward to. I also expect good parties and training. Looking at the programme on the website it is going to be a memborable conference.

What is a JCI World Congress?

Every November, members from across the globe come together for the peak of the JCI year at JCI World Congress. At this global forum international officers will be elected for the upcoming year. JCI Members also explore ideas for international initiatives and recognize the achievements of outstanding active citizens. With JCI in more than 100 countries and territories, members have the opportunity to meet fellow citizens from highly diverse backgrounds. JCI Members will share experiences and find new ways to create positive change on both local and global levels. At this event, JCI’s critical mass of young people will unite to magnify the positive impact of the JCI movement.
