OverviewThe California Jazz Conservatory
is an innovative nonprofit organi-
zation dedicated to the study and
performance of jazz — America’s
indigenous art form — and related
styles of music from around the
world. Founded in 1997, the
institution has recently been
granted accreditation by the
National Association of Schools
of Music (NASM), making it the
only accredited, stand-alone
conservatory devoted to jazz
studies in the United States. The
school is located in the heart of
the vibrant Downtown Berkeley
Arts District, home to Berkeley
Rep, the Freight & Salvage and
many other arts organizations.
Hailed as one of the nation’s most
comprehensive schools of jazz
and related styles of music, the
CJC offers instrumentalists and
vocalists of all ages and skill levels
a broad spectrum of performance
ensembles, lectures, workshops
and private instruction. Courses
are designed for the professional
musician, the serious student
and the jazz aficionado seeking
personal enrichment. A multi-
faceted institution, the CJC
comprises several key

Student TestimonialsPerhaps the best measure of
our impact is found in the very
favorable student remarks among
virtually all course evaluations.
Here are just a few examples of
the praise routinely earned by
the esteemed CJC and JCMS
faculty.
“ I think Seward McCain is a brilliant teacher. He makes concrete suggestions that immediately improve student performance.” — EMMET EILAND
“Kasey Knudsen has a real knack for teaching at a level that’s comfortable for everyone in the class. Great to have professionals that can not only play at a very high level, but teach very professionally as well.” — CURTIS UEJO
“ Marcos Silva could play and demonstrate what was needed on EVERY instrument in the ensemble. It was challenging but worth it.” — NICK KOUTSOUKIS
“Ellen Johnson is terrific. Very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, challenging and encouraging — a perfect blend. Overall, on a scale of 1 to 10, I give Ellen an 11.” — ANONYMOUS
“I do not think I could have made it this far, both artistically and professionally, without the support and encouragement of the superb Jazzschool instructors.” — ANDREA CLABURN
“ You have a real gem in Jennifer Jolly!!!!” — BRENDA PADDON
Enroll online at cjc.edu 7
“Rob Ewing took inert lumps of clay, molded them into musician-shaped figurines, breathed life into them, and now they can play music together in a group — a feat nothing short of miraculous. I stand in awe.” — ANONYMOUS
“Mimi Fox is like a national treasure. We’re so lucky to have her… Anything she chooses to teach, I’m there.” — JOE COHEN
“I like the Jazzschool because the faculty is top notch. My bandmates have commented on how my playing has improved.” — LUIS ROJAS
“Frank Martin is a beast (in the best way). He is the man.” — ANONYMOUS
“Peter Horvath is a phenomenal jazz pianist and an excellent teacher. I feel very fortunate to be learning from such a sophisticated player.” — LENA JOHNSON
“THE JAZZSCHOOL HAS
REALLY HELPED MY PLAYING.
I CAN’T RECOMMEND IT ENOUGH.
THE SCHOOL IS A GREAT VALUE!
YOU CAN’T GO WRONG.”
— MICHAEL MENDUNO
“This school is truly a blessing. You aren’t just taught by professional teachers who play music, you’re taught by professional musicians who teach!” — DYLAN HABEGGER

JAZZ THEORY AND IMPROVThis course provides a comprehensive
overview of jazz theory and its application
to improvisation and composition.
Topics include chord and scale theory,
7th, 9th, 11th and 13th chords, harmonic
progressions (chord changes), basic
reharmonization, form and analysis. Class
time is used to explain and demonstrate
suspensions and slash chords, bebop
and pentatonic scales, blues changes and
rhythm changes. The course also includes
advanced techniques of playing outside
the changes. Stylistic analysis of various
jazz masters supplements theoretical
material and guides students in applying
this knowledge to improvisation. Handouts
provided. Prerequisites: knowledge of basic music theory, including chord construction and the II–V–I progression.

COMPOSITION & ARRANGING
SONGWRITINGStudents explore melody writing, basic
harmony, more adventurous chord
progressions, song form, rhyme schemes,
and cultivate the instrumental component
of songwriting — all with the purpose of
honing each student’s unique songwriting
voice. In-class and at-home composition
and listening exercises are assigned each
week, while students begin the daily
practices of “morning pages” and transcrip-
tion of melody and harmony. Most impor-
tant, students develop two or three songs
over the course of the 10-week session, to
be presented and refined in real time.
Saturdays 11:45am – 1:15pm9/27 – 12/6 (10 weeks)

ARRANGINGA hands-on course packed with invaluable
information! Longtime producer, arranger
and keyboardist Frank Martin guides
students in creating fresh arrangements
of jazz standards. A wide range of
compositional techniques and musical
devices are explored and applied to class
assignments including: the use of different
rhythmic feels and grooves; reharmoniza-
tion; form changes; innovative intros,
outros, codas and vamps; and alterations
to melody and lyrics. Students sing or play
selected repertoire in a variety of styles
and learn how to make even the most
common standards sound new.

FALL 2014 CALENDAR
Dear JYMP students and parents,I’m really looking forward to the beginning of the new
school year! It’s an opportunity for me to hear all of
the young musicians who are either returning to the
program or participating in the Young Musicians
Program for the first time, and I really enjoy hearing
where everyone is in their musical development.
My goals are to find a place for all of the musicians who audition and put together the
best possible combination of musicians; musicians who will challenge and inspire each
other and respond to the leadership of their ensemble coaches.
This fall, we’ll have our excellent faculty returning, including Dave Eshelman leading
the Studio Band, Michael Zilber and myself coaching the Advanced High School
Jazz Workshops, as well as Rob Ewing, Kasey Knudsen, Colin Hogan and Joe Bagale
and myself coaching middle and high school ensembles, with Kyra Gordon and
Kenneth Helman leading vocal performance classes. I’m thrilled to create as many
exciting and musically-enriching situations as possible for the young musicians
in the program, and looking forward to a great and musical school year.

FACULTY PROFILE Colin HoganColin Hogan is a San Francisco native and began studying drums in the first grade, then, after a short stint with guitar, settled on piano. A former Jazzschool student, Colin is currently a very active performer and teacher around the Bay Area and internationally. He shares his thoughts about how to develop as a musician.
How long have you been teaching at the Jazzschool?
II’ve only been teaching at the
Jazzschool for one year but I’ve
already seen my students grow, both
as individuals and as ensembles, and
am really looking forward to helping
to continue that growth this coming
year. This is especially rewarding
because I studied at the Jazzschool
myself when I was in high school.
How did you first get started in music?
I am lucky to have been born into a
very musical family! Both my parents
and both my brothers are all musicians
as well so I pretty much started in the
womb and never looked back!
What are the benefits to playing in an ensemble?
Learning to play music in an ensemble
is an invaluable life lesson. Through it
we learn communication, cooperation,
problem solving skills, diplomacy and
how to react in the moment. When
all of these abilities are mastered to
make beautiful music, the feeling is
truly transcendent.
How can a student make the most of his/her time at the Jazzschool?
Jazzschool is an incredible resource
with many high-caliber instructors
from a variety of backgrounds. I
would encourage students to stretch
out of their comfort zone and take
full advantage of the very supportive
community.
What projects are you looking forward to this fall?
I’m actually excited about a couple
of performances I have coming up at
the Jazzschool venue. On Aug. 22nd
I’ll be backing up current California
Jazz Conservatory student Jenelle
Roccaforte along with my two
brothers, Steve and Julian, during
a “Rising Star” performance. Then
on Oct. 18th, I’m performing with
one of my favorite projects, the
local “avante-groove” group Klaxon
Mutant All-Stars.

Jazzschool Young Musicians ProgramThe Jazzschool Young Musicians
Program is a year-round compre-
hensive music education and
performance program designed
for instrumental and vocal
students between the ages of
11 and 18. The Young Musicians
Program has been at the center
of the Jazzschool’s educational
and artistic goals since 1997. Its
curriculum provides students
with the opportunity to work
with professional jazz artists
and educators, strengthening
performance skills, expanding
knowledge of jazz theory and
improvisation, and learning
more about the foundations of
jazz and related styles of music.
Students participate in after-
school classes, master classes
with nationally known jazz
artists, and are featured in public
performances in venues through-
out the San Francisco Bay Area
and beyond.
2014 PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
JYMP ensembles require a commitment
of three quarters (fall, winter and spring).
Students unable to commit to a full school
year are still encouraged to audition,
however, priority will be given to those who
can remain in the program for the entire
school year. Students wishing to audition
mid-year will be placed in the program
based on availability of open spots in
ensembles and the student’s ability level.
Please note that we may not be able to
accommodate all students but it is our
mission to find a place for everyone if
at all possible.

ADVANCED RHYTHMIC PHRASING with Jon ArkinOne of the challenges many musicians
encounter in improvisation is in learning
how to free up their rhythmic phrasing. This
two-part workshop provides concepts and
exercises to help you move beyond the usual
tendencies in 4/4 and 3/4 time, through the
study of polyrhythm and polymeter. In the
first session, written examples are provided
for various rhythmic patterns (with an
emphasis on learning how to count them),
and an overview of how to superimpose
these patterns over the most common
meters and forms. The second session
focuses on the application of these rhythms
to music through playing & listening, as
well as introducing a variety of advanced
exercises, concepts & practice routines.
This type of ear training is essential in
developing recognition and comfort within
the advanced rhythmic environment of
modern music — and ultimately, enables
new levels of expression and interaction in
any musical context. Examples are shown
on drum set, but all musicians who want to
develop their rhythmic sense are welcome.

THE IMPROVISOR’S SEMINARwith Clark SuprynowiczThis workshop series explains how to
improvise with a lead-sheet using real-
world examples from solos by John
Coltrane and others. It departs from the
often-used approach of “see this chord,
play this scale” and gets into the actual
vocabulary of jazz in a way that is easily
understood and accessible. Visiting
musicians demonstrate some of the
approaches under discussion, and
students listen to audio recordings.
No need to bring instruments to this
seminar.
Discussion topics include:
• How to play on standards.
• What it means to “play in a key.”
• How to recognize the key you’re in,
even if it’s not obvious.
• How playing in a key, rather than from
chord-to-chord, is part of the jazz
tradition.
• How to practice so all this gets more
intuitive and more fun.

NEW MODALITIES IN JAZZ COMPOSITION with Jason LevisThis two-part lecture series focuses on
strategies to expand your approach to
jazz composition and improvisation by
utilizing techniques from 21st Century
classical composition, including orchestra-
tion techniques of the French spectralists,
heterophonic practices of the post-war
avant-garde, layering principles in new
complexity, and extended techniques in
musique concrète instrumentale.
PART ONE explores approaches to modal
jazz using techniques from French
spectralism. Employing simple tools such
as instrumentation, register, and dynamics,
we explore ways of varying timbre and
harmonic color while retaining harmonic
function. We also look at how this
can be reflected in structures used for
improvisation.
PART TWO discusses the use of counter-
point in modern jazz. We begin with a
brief introduction to the basic principles
of counterpoint and review examples from
jazz repertoire by composers like Dave
Holland and Henry Threadgill. Utilizing
tools such as rhythmic independence,
heterophony, and linear melodic layering,
we explore ways to extend ensemble
interplay in both written and improvised
contexts.
Saturdays, October 18 and 25, 3:15 – 5:15pm$60 advance • $75 day of workshop
Jason Levis holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Composition from UC Berkeley and a B.A. in Music, Naropa University. FACULTY PROFILE Mimi FoxMimi Fox is a 6-time DownBeat magazine International Critics Poll winner who has performed/recorded with Diana Krall, Branford Marsalis, Joey DeFrancesco, Abbey Lincoln, Kurt Elling, David Sanchez and Stevie Wonder among countless others. She discussed her experiences and advice for musicians.
How long have you been teaching?
I have been teaching almost as long
as I have been playing. I started
playing guitar when I was 9 years
old and by the time I was 11, I was
teaching all the teenagers in my
neighborhood how to play Beatles
songs!
How and when did you start with the Jazzschool?
I was invited to be one of the first
faculty members in 1997 and have
been with the school ever since.
What makes the guitar program at the Jazzschool special?
When we started the program, Susan
asked us to design courses that we,
ourselves, would have loved to have
taken as students. We have a well-
rounded guitar program because we
cover all the important modern guitar
styles: jazz, blues, flamenco, Brazilian.
The faculty are all world-class artists
I’m proud to have as colleagues.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to play the guitar but isn’t sure where to start?
Find a guitar that’s comfortable to play and
that you enjoy playing so that you will enjoy
practicing. Also, make sure you can commit
to putting in the time to practice.
What is the most important thing that a guitarist and vocalist need to keep in mind when working together?
The best guitar/vocal duos develop a
musical telepathy. They have to be able to
communicate very clearly with each other
to function as one instrument or one voice.
It’s very important for a guitarist to know
the lyrics and understand the meaning and
intent of the songs, and for the vocalist to
have a secure sense of time.
What upcoming projects are you looking forward to this year?
In October, I’ll be guest artist at a jazz guitar
symposium in Provence, France. Next year,
I’ll be touring India and China. I will also be
touring with Steve Vai and Stanley Jordan. I
also have a new project coming out with the
great Seattle based vocalist, Greta Matassa.

scriptions of classic recordings, we look at
how to employ devices like shout choruses,
modulations, tempo changes, intros, codas,
send-offs, backgrounds, tags, vamps,
interludes, trading, breaks/stop-time and
more. Students receive transcriptions of
arrangements by Dizzy Gillespie, Horace
Silver, Tadd Dameron, Miles Davis, Ahmad

PLAYING THE HECK OUT OF “THERE WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER YOU” with Anton Schwartz newThis workshop delves deeply into one
of the most widely-played of all the jazz
standards: a classic by Harry Warren. We
examine the song’s harmony in ways that
will directly help us improvise over it,
discussing the chord progression on both
a micro level (how each chord leads to the
next) and a big-picture level (how they all
work together to form a coherent song).
Suggestions are given for ways to mentally
simplify the song’s structure, as well as a
variety of neat harmonic tricks to embel-
lish the chord changes. Students have the
option to improvise over the song
and get critiqued, with recommendations
given for a direct path to improvement.
Prerequisites: facility on a melodic instrument or vocals. Knowledge of basic harmony, including major, minor and mixolydian scales. Suggested: some familiarity with There Will Never Be Another You, and with altered and half-diminished chords. Bring your instrument (optional).
Saturday, November 15, 3:15 – 5:15pm$30 advance • $45 day of workshop

ALTERED DOMINANT AND DOMINANT 13(b9) CHORDS: THE HOW, WHEN AND WHY OF USING THEM with Anton Schwartz newThese two chords provide rich colors that
are essential to the palette of intermediate
and advanced jazz players. This workshop
takes a deep look at the chords and their
accompanying scales, examining how
each is constructed, why they are con-
structed that way and how they may be
used to maximal effect. Their sounds are
contrasted within the context of jazz (e.g.
when should one be used rather than the
other?) by listening to examples of their
use. Additional topics include: different
types of “outness”; and lydian dominant,
the “sister” of the altered sound. This
workshop is appropriate for students with
little prior exposure to the subject, as well
as students familiar with melodic minor
and diminished harmony who wish to

Working with pianist/arranger Mike Greensill, the two released their 19th recording, “Message From the Man in the Moon.” More at weslawhitfield.com
Mike Greensill, in addition to his work with Wesla, has also had the pleasure of accom-panying such diverse talents as Rita Moreno, Margaret Whiting, Broadway stars Lillias White and Franc D’Ambrosio and jazz singers Madeline Eastman, Ann Hampton Callaway and Opie Bellas. In January 2014, Mike published his magnum opus, “Playing for Singers.” In it, he brings his many years of accompanying experience to bear in exploring the accompanist’s art as it applies to the performance of the “Great American Songbook.” Read more at mikegreensill.com

Workshops
VOCALS & INSTRUMENTAL
CELTIC JAZZ (FOR INSTRUMENTALISTS & VOCALISTS)with Melanie O’Reilly & Frank MartinCeltic jazz is part of an “ethno-jazz”
movement currently developing in Europe
and worldwide. In this unique workshop,
instructors Melanie O’Reilly & Frank Martin
illustrate the dialogue between the two
great traditions of jazz and Irish traditional
music, through songs and instrumentals.
Tracing the basic elements of the roots of
the rich and diverse Irish music tradition,
they explore how uplifting Irish instrumental
rhythms can be integrated into swing, jazz
waltz and Latin rhythms, while also demon-
strating how Irish “lilting” (Irish “mouth
music”) can be developed and inspire
vocal scat. Modal harmonic ideas are
demonstrated, illustrating how modes such
as Aolian, Dorian, Mixolydian, used in Irish
music, can be woven into jazz themes.
Finally, the bridging of the melodic tradition
of Ireland with contemporary harmony and
arrangements illustrating how this “fusion”
brings a fresh, new and exciting collabora-
tion — a true Atlantic bridge!
Sunday, October 19, 2 – 4pm$40 advance • $55 day of workshop

MUSICAL LIAISONS: BILLIE HOLIDAY AND LESTER YOUNGwith Ellen Johnson & Don BradenBillie Holiday “Lady Day” and Lester Young
“Prez” had one of the most special musical
relationships in the history of jazz. From the
late 1930s, the two made music together
that transcended into a perfect dance, often
anticipating the other’s movements before
they happened. This workshop explores the
rich repertoire that became famous as a
result of their enigmatic relationship. This is
an opportunity to sing and play through
the songs and analyze what contributes to
the success of a musical partnership.
Students are provided with several lead
sheets of the classic songs that Lady Day
and Prez performed together. Open to
both vocalists and instrumentalists.
Sunday, October 26, Noon – 3pm$100 advance • $115 day of workshop
