Welcome to the Fall 2011 edition of our Discoveries Newsletter. November is National Diabetes Awareness Month! This edition of Discoveries is coming to you just in time for National Diabetes Awareness Month. There are numerous activities planned across the globe during November to try to increase awareness of diabetes and its potentially serious consequences.
DEAR FRIENDS OF JDRF:
It is with great sorrow that I inform you on the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Tara Gambardella- Development Manager in charge of our Walk to Cure Diabetes in Westchester and our Ride to Cure Diabetes Westchester Team.
Tara became ill the week leading up to our Walk on October 16th from a long history of heart problems and most recently with a blood clot on her recently replaced heart valve. For those that knew her well, you would also know that she was expecting her first child, a son.
This tragedy is very much unexpected and one that no one who knew her will
take easily. I offer my condolences to the Gambardella and Troy family, especially Carol and Bob Troy, Tara’s parents, and Craig Gambardella, Tara’s husband who she adored and found life-long friendship with.
Everyone will remember her smile that could light up a room and her constant willingness to help others. She was a wonderful friend, employee, and advocate for all those with type 1 diabetes. The volunteers and staff of JDRF are in our thoughts during this difficult time.
Thank you goes out to the wonderful supportive board of directors and chancellors of JDRF Westchester County for all their support and well wishes; we couldn’t get through this without you.

JDRF and the Israel Science Foundation Joint ProgramAnnounces First Round of Grant Recipients
— Strategic partnership moves forward in funding five world-class scientists.
NEW YORK, N.Y., August 1, 2011 -- The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the Israel Science Foundation
(ISF) announced today the first five grant recipients funded by the ISF-JDRF Joint Program in Type 1 Diabetes. Each of
the investigators will receive up to $130,000 per year for three years to support the highest quality basic and translational
research in type 1 diabetes.
The ISF–JDRF Joint Program in Type 1 Diabetes Research was established last year to leverage JDRF’s resources with the
ISF, a move that takes advantage of Israel’s talent and expertise in autoimmunity and beta cell biology. The joint venture is
expected to help accelerate the practical application of basic scientific advances into novel therapies for diabetes.
“The newly funded projects are innovative approaches to some of the most difficult challenges that need to be addressed
to cure type 1 diabetes,” says Richard Insel, M.D., chief scientific officer at JDRF. “I am excited by the outstanding scientific
talent in Israel and the opportunity to partner with ISF to support this talent.”
The research funded through this program will address the challenges of developing replenishable sources of islets to
restore beta cell function by transplantation, and developing new approaches to control the autoimmunity associated with
type 1 diabetes. In this first round of grant funding, the joint program is supporting the following projects:
The JDRF-ISF initiative will begin accepting applications for a second round of grants this fall, with a focus on larger
multi-investigator collaborations that bring together scientists from different disciplines.
“These new grants represent a significant investment that allows Israeli scientists to pursue their investigations while
being supported by a culture of excellence at the Israel Science Foundation,” says Shulamit Michaeli, Ph.D., head of the
life sciences and medicine division at the ISF. “We are delighted to leverage our resources with JDRF and work together
toward funding excellent diabetes research.”
“JDRF’s continued funding in Israel acknowledges the outstanding research capabilities of Israeli scientists in the field of
type 1 diabetes,” says Yoav Zidon, a board member of JDRF Israel. “We believe that these five awardees reflect that talent
and look forward to their future achievements.”
Clinical Updates
Shimon Efrat, Ph.D. – Using innovative tools in genetics and biochemistry, Dr. Efrat will try to create a replenishable source of human beta cells.
Gideon Gross, Ph.D. – This project will investigate approaches to recruit, induce, or engineer specific regulatory T cells to control the autoimmunity associated with type 1 diabetes.
Shulamit Levenberg, Ph.D. – Using bioengineered tissues, the goal of this project is to reconstruct a healthy environment fortransplanted islets in humans.
Eli Lewis, Ph.D. – Dr. Lewis will explore whether and how B lymphocytes, a component of the immune system, may contribute to the activity of a protein known as alpha-1-antitrypsin, which is currently being administered to preserve beta cell function in new onset type 1 diabetes clinical trials.
Yair Reisner, Ph.D. – A project that will use embryonic pig pancreatic tissue to replenish beta cells and correct diabetes.
Clinical Updates, continuedWork on Beta Cell Regeneration Continues
Several years ago, Swiss researchers found a protein called
Tmem27 on the outside of beta cells. If this protein stayed
active, mice seemed to have more beta cells. If the protein
split, it became inactive and beta cell mass decreased.
The scientists then found the
culprit that caused Tmem27
to split and become inactive.
It’s called Bace2, and it’s also
found on the outside of beta
cells. They found that mice
who didn’t have Bace2 had
larger beta cells and more beta cells. Mice without Bace2
also had better blood sugar control.
In the latest research, which was published in Cell
Metabolism, the scientists teamed up with researchers at
Hoffmann-LaRoche who had developed a compound that
could inhibit Bace2. With Bace2 inhibited, the mice were
able to grow new beta cells.
“This is an exciting and potentially impactful finding. It’s an
example of how researchers make an early observation and
follow up on it, and then take it to the next level where it has
translational potential - the potential to be developed into
a drug that promotes the growth of beta cells for diabetes,”
said Patricia Kilian, Ph.D., scientific program director of
regeneration research at JDRF.
JDRF Offers Reward For Glucose-Responsive Insulin
Anyone who can come up with an innovative way
to approach the discovery and development of a
smarter, glucose-responsive insulin could win the
JDRF/InnoCentive $100,000 challenge Glucose-responsive
insulin would work just when the body needs it. Somehow,
it would only activate in response to rising glucose levels.
This type of insulin could transform the way people with
type 1 diabetes live.
“What we need is sophisticated insulin that will take the
guesswork out of managing diabetes by developing a novel
insulin that works in the same way insulin works in people
without diabetes,” said Aaron Kowalski, Ph.D., JDRF’s
assistant Vice President of Treatment Therapies.
“By fostering novel approaches from diverse problem
solvers within and outside the diabetes field, we hope this
challenge with Innocentive will help speed progress toward
the development of glucose-responsive insulin, progress
that’s urgently needed by people with diabetes,” he added.
InnoCentive uses open innovation and crowdsourcing
to come up with solutions for difficult problems. Recent
discoveries made through InnoCentive’s unique approach
include the identification of a biomarker for ALS (Lou
Gehrig’s disease) and a new delivery method for folic acid
for women in underdeveloped countries. Submissions for
the JDRF challenge will be accepted through Nov. 9, 2011.
At this stage, only a written proposal is required. After that,

meet william whiteWilliam is just 5, and already knows diabetes is not stopping him from being a regular kid. William is in 1st grade, and will be turning 6 in December. He was diagnosed 2 weeks after his 4th birthday and one week before Christmas in 2009, so he is approaching the 2 year mark. His mother, Linda, had a conversation with William to talk about diabetes and what it meant to him.
What is diabetes? “I have a pump that gives me insulin. I test my blood sugar, sometimes I do it by myself. When I get insulin I can do exercise.”
What would you tell another child who is newly diagnosed with diabetes? “It doesn’t hurt. You will be able to eat food, but you will not be able to eat frosting. You can only have juice when you are low.”
What do you tell your friends about diabetes? “I have a meter that puts a needle in my body and tells me my number, my blood sugar. (At school) some people still come up and look when I get tested. Sometimes kids ask if it hurts but I say it doesn’t hurt.”
What does your pump do? “My pump gives me insulin to my body. I can exercise, eat...eat healthy food. It doesn’t bother me to wear a pump bag. I don’t have insulin in my body but I get insulin from my pump.”
Why is a pump better than shots? “There is no needle when you give me insulin......well, there is the infusion set.”
Do you know what the JDRF does? “They do science with the rats and the mouse to find a cure.” (While learning about the Walk for a Cure, William asked what a cure was - Linda told him maybe scientists would do research and find out why he and other people have diabetes and could make him better. William’s response to getting cured was “oh then I could eat frosting every day!”)
What is your favorite food? “Pizza and cupcakes (without frosting). I could have that right now!”
What are carbs? “They are the ingredients of food. You have to look at the boxes and you tape some stuff on the jar at home.” (Linda cuts out the box labels of various foods and tape them onto the container to know the carbs).
What do your parents tell you about diabetes? “If your pump buzzes, tell me.” “You are brave.”
What is it like to travel with diabetes? “We have to say to the man or lady in the security building that I have a pump. The alarm goes off and then they do the thing to look for weapons. How come they do that for kids? Kids can’t have weapons!
While asking these questions and getting William to talk about his diabetes, he actually said “I don’t feel like I have diabetes”, and that he feels no different than everyone else. Even at 5, William has the ability to already share his feelings and tell his parents that he truly is just like everyone else.
SHOP RITE BECOMES A NEW PARTNER WITH JDRF, WESTCHESTER COUNTY CHAPTER
We are excited to announce that Shop Rite Supermar-
kets have partnered with JDRF Westchester County
Chapter! Shop Rite, a Bronze sponsor, at the 2011 Walk
to Cure Diabetes, has agreed to sell sneakers in their
Westchester stores in an effort to raise money and
awareness for type 1 diabetes. The promotion will take
place this winter. Welcome Shop Rite!
Westchester County Chapter sets the bar at the Ride to Cure Diabetes in Burlington, VT.
The Westchester County Chapter of JDRF made a big splash
in Burlington, VT this July, participating in the first Ride to
Cure Diabetes as a chapter. Ten riders from the Westchester
County area took part in the 100 mile bike ride, raising money
for JDRF. There were over 100 riders in attendance from all
over the country, each rider trained for months preparing
for the 100 mile bike ride starting in Burlington VT. Riders
have the option of turning around at any point during the
route. All riders in attendance were asked to raise a minimum
of $2,000.
For its first year participating in the Ride to Cure Diabetes,
Westchester County Chapter had a great showing. The
Westchester Chapter was the third highest fundraising
chapter and the 2nd highest individual fundraiser was
Westchester County Chapter rider Steve Silpe. The first
rider to complete the 100 mile bike ride was Westchester
County Chapter rider Brian Fagen!
With a first year fundraising goal of $40,000 the group
of 10 riders from Westchester County really raised the bar
and surpassed this goal by raising over $70,000! Riders are
already looking forward to next year’s ride. Congratulations
to all our riders and a special thank you to our very
dedicated Ride to Cure Diabetes Chair, Tim Chizak for all of
his hard work in making this happen for our chapter!

November 14 is World Diabetes Day.
This day was chosen because it’s the
birthday of Frederick Banting, one of
the scientists who was instrumental
in the discovery of insulin. Last year,
more than 900 monuments in 84
different countries were lit up in blue
lights in honor of World Diabetes
Day. While your home may not count
as a monument, many people living
with diabetes light their homes up in
blue too. For more information on activities going on in the
U.S. and in other countries, visit www.worlddiabetesday.org.
You can also spend World Diabetes Day getting to know
other people in the area living with type 1 diabetes and the
JDRF Westchester staff. From 6 to 8 p.m. on World Diabetes

JDRF Mentor Program
JDRF can connect you with another family
member or adult facing life circumstances
similar to yours. For example, as an adult,
you may be dealing with workplace
issues, planning to have children, have
financial/insurance concerns, and more. A
family, on the other hand, may be facing
a new diagnosis, dealing with sending
a child to school or college for the first
time, or trying to handle an increasingly
independent teenager. Our family and adult
mentors are volunteers who can share
their personal experiences, answer non-
medical questions, and most importantly,
lend valuable, specialized support when
you need it most. If you would like to be
connected with a local JDRF Volunteer

HOLIDAY CARD PROGRAM
Walk to Cure Diabetes
This year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes, held October 16, was a huge success. Donations are still coming in, but this year’s walk has made close to $500,000 for much needed type 1 diabetes research. Donations for this year’s walk can be accepted through January by visiting walk.jdrf.org.
The new location, Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway, offered plenty of room
to spread out for a day full of fun activities and fundraising. There was live music,
dance performances, pony rides, two bounce castles, and a great walk route
around the race track. Bob Galterio, his daughter Clare, and the entire Empire
City team went above and beyond for JDRF by providing an amazing venue and
saving us costs.
The Stagg family served as our first “Walk Family Honoree,” and Theresa Stagg,
a JDRF board member, spoke on behalf of her family and their walk team, Team
Amanda. Since their first walk, Team Amanda has raised more than $300,000!
Theresa told the crowd at the walk what it’s like for her daughter Amanda to live
with diabetes, why they participate in the walk and what it meant to her family to
be honored.
“Our family is truly thankful to be the first family honoree for the JDRF Walk.
We appreciate the support and love our family and friends have provided Team
Amanda over the past 7 years,” said Theresa.
Our fundraising success and top fundraising teams will be announced at the
Walk Awards scheduled for January 7, 2012 from 9 to 11 a.m. at The Renaissance
Westchester Hotel in West Harrison, N.Y.
As in years past, JDRF Westchester has been fortunate to have many generous

About Jean Marie Trick, Kids Walk Coordinator
Since August of 2004, Jean Marie has served as
the Special Events Assistant in JDRF’s Hudson
Valley Branch, where the Kids Walk program is
still in its infancy. During her tenure, Jean Marie
worked closely with her volunteer committees
to plan and implement two annual Walks to
Cure Diabetes as well as the Hudson Valley’s
Hope Gala. She has presented the Kids Walk program at a number of
schools, accounting for $50k in added revenue since the programs
inception. Having previously worked for the National Office of the
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society as well as for Gabrielle’s Angel
Foundation for Cancer Research and North Shore Animal League,
Jean Marie has spent the majority of her career working in the non-
profit sector. We are confident that her past experience coupled with
her knowledge and passion for JDRF’s mission give her the tools
necessary to make the Kids Walk program a great success. Jean Marie
is very excited about this new venture and looks forward to working
with the JDRF staff and the board of directors at both chapters to
ensure the Kids Walk program realizes growth and reaches its full
potential in Westchester and Fairfield Counties.
Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes Pilot Program
We are thrilled to announce
that the Westchester County
Chapter, in partnership with
the Fairfield County Chapter,
has been chosen as one of the
two new markets that will be
participating in JDRF’s Kids
Walk Pilot Program. As part
of this pilot, which began in four markets in
January 2010, we will receive additional support
including a part time staff member, Jean Marie
Trick. She will focus on school recruitment,
school kick-off presentations and walk days.
All local revenue raised will be allocated to our
Chapter! With proven success, this program will
continue to be replicated in additional markets
across the country. We are excited to be part
of this pilot opportunity which will educate
local students about diabetes and raise valuable
research dollars!
Kids Walk to Cure Diabetes
How you can help make the Kids Walk Pilot a success:
• Open the door to your child’s school. Introduce Jean Marie
to your Principal, PE Teacher or School Nurse. Jean Marie
will meet with them to explain how the program works and
the benefits of holding a Kids Walk at their school, as well as
execute the program!
• Volunteer! We’re looking for volunteers to work with Jean
Marie to assist with school prsentations, walk days and
spreading the word!

2011 WPDH Roof-a-thon!
If you live in the Hudson Valley- you likely have
heard of WPDH’s Annual Roof-a-thon event to
benefit JDRF! This event originated 27 years ago on
the roof of the 7-11 on Route 9 in Wappingers Falls
and has evolved into a three day, live broadcasted
event just down the street in Meiser Park. On Friday,
September 23rd the “Home of Rock and Roll”
WPDH kicked off the festivities with Biker Night,
hosted a local flea market on Saturday, and ended
with the signature Wappingers Falls’ Picnic in the
Park family day. Over the course of the three days,
loyal “Road Warriors” braved the streets armed with
buckets to collect donations from passing cars. A special thank you to all of
the WPDH staff for their hard work and efforts, Craig Thomas Pest Control-
the title sponsor of the event, the LaGrange Fire Department for hosting
a huge fundraiser totaling over $10,000, and our local Shop Rite stores in
Poughkeepsie and Fishkill. Together the event raised over $30,000 toward
diabetes research!!
STRIKE Out Diabetes!
On Sunday, October 16th at Goshen Historic Track in Goshen, NY and
Saturday, October 22nd at Dutchess Stadium in Wappingers Falls, NY
the Hudson Valley region came together for one reason- to Strike Out
Diabetes! This baseball themed annual campaign was full of change in
2011- new locations, new dates and new time of day! By expanding our
Newburgh walk into two sites- one on each side of the Hudson, we were
successful in reaching new families and businesses which generated more
fundraising efforts. We are thrilled to share that between the two walk sites
we are projecting to bring in over $200,000! Thank you to everyone who
participated in the walks this year and we look forward to seeing you all again
soon at the awards night- stay tuned for details! Still have donations to turn
in? IT’S NOT TOO LATE! You can continue to send in donations to the office
and use your fundraising page into the New Year. Those totals will count
toward team and individual awards.
