A creative havenPerhaps you joined us last month to see how Jørgen and Lonnie

are coming along with the remodel of the second f loor of their

home? They ’re taking a somewhat non-tradit ional approach as

Lonnie feels that putt ing in skyl ights wi l l ruin the beautiful , old

house. She’s come up with a number of alternative solut ions

instead to bring dayl ight into the rooms. This t ime we’re taking a

look into a room that ’s mirrored compared to the guest room that

was featured last month. One end of the second f loor has been

spl it into two rooms. The window under the cei l ing faces into the

other room. This room also has the same inf low of l ight from the

spacious landing thanks to a tal l , narrow window behind the door.

As in the rest of the house, the bui lding style is carr ied out with

secondhand bui lding materials wherever possible. Old windows,

doors and backbands real ly create a sense that this was part of

the house from the beginning. I t makes it real ly cozy. They found

the materials at secondhand bui lding yards and by staying in c lose

contact with various craftsmen that might come across old houses

that are being remodeled and from which the old parts would

otherwise have been s imply thrown out.

This room has now become the creative haven that Lonnie has

wanted for so long, a space for her to plan and prepare smal l

art ic les or make special i tems when decorating another room.

Having a place where you can gather up al l of your things and leave

them out for the duration of your work process is just wonderful .

When you’re constantly coming up with so many ideas, i t ’s a lmost

a necessity. Previously this would take place at the dining table,

which was in no way pract ical .

7

Page 8: Jeanne d'Arc Living Magazine - ISSUE 3 (2016) Brocante - a lifelong passion

At the moment, one project that Lonnie is working on is making

these del icate, handmade roses from various new and old fabrics.

They ’re just adorable, especial ly when displayed in the old box,

which was previously used for storing Christmas ornaments.

They ’re to be used for decoration or perhaps for an art ic le at some

point. This is one of the things that Lonnie loves to f iddle with in

the evening. Whereas others might do some sort of knitt ing or

needlework or watch TV, this is her haven.

There’s no color on the wal ls in this room but the furniture and

accessories do have some color. Lonnie loves vintage shades of pink

and blue. They ’re the common thread throughout the house at the

moment. F inding enough old things in these wonderful shades is

very diff icult so she’s doing an unprecedented amount of paint ing

and dyeing. The round throw pi l lows that are stacked on the chair

are ready to be dyed. The tul le dress on the bench chair has just

been dyed a wonderful , faded shade of blue. The smal l , pink dress

hanging on a hanger on the wal l has also been dyed with our paint.

When dyeing text i les with Vintage Paint, mix the paint with plain

water. 1 part paint to 10 parts water y ields an intense color. I f you’d

l ike a more dusty or muted shade, mix in up to 20 parts water. Mix
