Dear ReaderFinally High Summer You can almost smell the pine cones, the forest fl oor

mixed with the smell of sea salt and seaweed – feel the

heat and the prickly lyme grass between your toes – when

you look at the photos of the Swedish beach huts in this

issue of the magazine. That's high summer at its best

around these latitudes. In this issue, we'll take you on

a small tour of smaller homes: We'll show the loveliest

beach huts in Sweden as well as two amazing and very

personal small homes. You'll fi nd plenty of inspiration

for how to decorate a small space. If you're heading to

southern Europe this summer on the other hand, the

scent of the large lavender fi elds will be predominant.

We paid a visit to a real lavender producer in France

and bring you a small theme about lavender – one of

the most wonderful plants in our opinion.

If you're on vacation, you might be planning to visit

some fl ea markets as well to fi nd old zinc along with

other treasures. We'll provide you with a bit of history

on zinc as well as inspiration for possible uses. Of course

high summer also means fresh strawberries and an

abundance of summer fl owers. But everything doesn't

have to be so traditional. Why not use unripe berries

and fruit to make summer bouquets and decorations?

We hope that you'll fi nd plenty of good inspiration for

a truly lovely summer.

Happy reading!

Who are we, and why the name Jeanne d’Arc Living?Who are we, and why the name Jeanne d’Arc Living?Who are we, and why the name

The French heroine Jeanne d’Arc was an amazing woman with an unusually strong will and sense of purpose. She didn’t ascribe to the common opinions of her time of what one should or should not do. Instead she went her own way and fought till the very end for her beliefs.

In using her name in connection with our company, we do so with the utmost respect for this remarkable woman. We also feel that there’s a lesson to be learned from her – even now, 600 years later. We should all have the courage to go our own ways and dare to stand out from the crowd. From the very beginning these have been some of our main goals for the company. We continuously aim to think outside the box and stand up for what we believe.

Today part of the company is a publishing business that publishes our own magazines and books. The common thread in everything we do is the French-Nordic country style. We publish a magazine that keeps to the style, avoiding distracting advertisements within the magazine. This is, of course, a challenge. It requires a substantial amount of editorial material and that we do most of it ourselves in order to make ends meet. The magazine is published in eight languages and sold in many parts of the world.

We also run a wholesale business with our own designs produced both here in Denmark and abroad. The company has been around for almost ten years and is jointly owned by Lonnie Würtz Jensen and Vivian Christensen. If you’d like to learn more about us and the company, you can follow our everyday life on our blog.

All the best,

Lonnie & Vivian

DELPHINIUMS

DELPHINIUMS ARE SOME OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL AND ELEGANT

GARDEN PERENNIALS. THEY CAN GROW UP TO 5 FEET TALL,

AND SOME VARIETIES EVEN MORE. DELPHINIUMS COME IN SHADES

OF WHITE, PINK, PURPLE AND BLUE. THEY BLOOM IN JULY

AND AUGUST AND ARE VERY WELL-SUITED FOR USE IN BOUQUETS

AND DECORATIONS.

You can also buy them from seed if you'd like to sow your own

delphiniums. If you cut the fl owers just before they're in full

bloom, you'll be able to dry your delphiniums with great success.

The pink and purple fl owers are especially well-suited for drying.

Use the dried delphiniums to make wreaths or decorations or

just use the bouquets for decoration 'as is'. This way you can

enjoy your delphiniums for a really long time. The fl ower is also

known as larkspur, but Delphinium is actually the Latin name

for the genus. The fl ower was named by the Greek doctor and

botanist Pedanios, who lived in the fi rst century A.D. Some

PRETTY AND SIMPLEDelphiniums are beautiful in bouquets

and decorations. You can make a small

bouquet using only delphiniums and place

it in a pitcher. The fl owers bloom from the

bottom up so you'll usually see some buds

at the top of the stem. This adds wonderful

interest to the bouquet. If you remove a

few of the fl owers from the bottom, you

can fl oat them in a centerpiece display

with a bit of water.

believe that it got its name because the buds resemble the

shape of a dolphin. Others are of the conviction that the

name came from the knights since the spurs of the fl owers

are reminiscent of the spurs that the knights would use when

riding their horses. Several varieties of this popular ornamental

plant have been given names that originate from the stories

about King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

BOUQUET IN AN OLD WATERING CANThis large, old watering can is ideal for a beautiful and

abundant bouquet of garden fl owers and wildfl owers.

Arrange the umbels of ground elder, pink cranesbills

and violet delphiniums to make a lavish and beautiful

summer bouquet.

NATURAL AND RUSTIC

Many people feel that delphiniums can

be diffi cult to use in bouquets with other

fl owers because of their long spikes. But

they're nothing short of amazing in this

combination with pink cranesbills and a bit

of catnip placed in a beautiful and rustic

old vase. Remove some of the bottom

fl owers on each stem if you like. This

makes them easier to use. Experiment

with the fl owers from your garden.

DELPHINIUMS

WILD DECORATION The decoration in the large silver cup is

made with fl oral oasis. Make sure that the

oasis is thoroughly saturated with water.

Place the oasis in the cup, allowing it to

protrude about ½ inch (1-2 cm) above

the edge. Purple delphiniums are placed

in the oasis to add height and drape over

the sides. Purple hydrangeas are poked in

around the sides to form the base of the

decoration. Pink cranesbills and burgundy

bloodwort are added to form a wonderful

and slightly wild decoration.

LAVISH WREATH AND DECORATION FOR A DINNER PARTYThis beautiful wreath, which is placed on a centerpiece display,

is made using a wet fl oral oasis wreath. Make sure that the

wreath has soaked up plenty of water before you begin. The

fl owers that we used here are violet delphiniums, purple

hydrangeas, pink cranesbills and ground elder umbels. Cut

the stems of the fl owers quite short and distribute in the oasis

to make a beautiful and homogeneous wreath. The small

plate decoration is made in a small bowl with wet fl oral oasis

using the same fl owers as for the wreath. Let the fl oral oasis

protrude about 3/8 inch (1 cm) above the edge of the bowl

to allow room to add fl owers from the sides.

in the GardenIn our opinion, old things made out of zinc are just something

that belongs with the style. These items frequently have a completely unique patina that's simply

irresistible. Vats, pots, tubs and watering cans are all relatively easy to fi nd at markets and in stores dealing in antiques and vintage items. Other zinc items can be a bit more diffi cult to fi nd so you may need to be patient or intensify

your search. Use your zinc items around the garden to create plenty of atmosphere.

All of the large pots, vats, tubs and boxes and other large containers make ideal planters.

Many of these have a really nice size for the purpose. It's important, however, to drill holes

in the bottom of the containers to ensure good drainage before planting.

Pitchers and watering cans are a natural fi t in the yard and on the porch.

Try grouping several of them together. This will create a very charming atmosphere.

From time to time you might also fi nd old pitchers with holes on the bottom.

They're no good for watering, of course, but decorative nonetheless.

Personally I'm happy to buy them regardless. You can often get your hands on them cheaply. Use

them for decoration or perhaps as planters? You might also be fortunate enough to

fi nd zinc stencils. Use them as part of a still life in your garden together

with other zinc items seasoned with summer plants.

A collection of various vats and tubs looks decorative hanging on the garage wall when not in use.

A fun idea: Use an old zinc tub under the gutter drain. It looks very decorative, and you can use

the rain water that you collect for watering your pots and garden plants.

USE YOUR OLD ZINC

13

Page 16: Jeanne d'Arc Living Magazine - ISSUE 7 (2014) The scent of SUMMER

OLD ZINC FROM FRANCEOld zinc items from France are often a bit more diffi cult to fi nd and can be quite costly.

But on the other hand, they're just the kinds of things that are really special. The large, old

olive drums make such a huge difference in a garden display. Old, Nordic zinc pots, which

are comparable with these drums, are lovely as well but it just isn't quite the same. You should always be on

the lookout. You might get lucky and fi nd one that isn't too expensive. Occasionally you'll also fi nd good

reproductions for sale.

Old signs and stencils, cemetery vases, plant stakes with porcelain signs, birdcages,

pots of various sizes and last but not least the beautiful, French pitchers are all things that help to create the

perfect atmosphere. You might also be lucky enough to fi nd old, Nordic items that are just as special as the

French ones, so always keep an eye out when visiting markets.

When putting together displays for your garden using your wonderful zinc items,

combine them with sandstone pots, items made out of iron or wood and whatever other charming things you

happen to have. You should always make sure to give your special things pride of place so each individual

item can truly shine.

LavenderIf you love everything French, you're almost bound to love lavender as well. The fragrance – or sight – of a lavender fi eld is simply enchanting... but less will suffi ce.

Lavender is an amazing perennial that we simply love, e.g. in an herbaceous border with roses – the classic combination. Lavender goes with most everything however and can also easily stand alone – in pots, along the edge of a fl ower bed or along a garden path.

But our small lavender theme is mostly about giving you inspiration for how to use lavender in different contexts: in your cooking and to make bath and body products and how to use it decoratively while also enjoying its fragrance...
