PROPOSED NEW SOLAR PARK SUBSTATION NEAR UPINGTON:

PRELIMINARY GEOTECHNICAL

INVESTIGATION FOR EVALUATION OF THREE SITES

FACTUAL GEOTECHNICAL REPORT

1. INTRODUCTION This factual report presents the results of the geotechnical field investigations undertaken for the proposed construction of a substation near Upington in the Northern Cape. Three potential sites are being investigated to provide a comparative assessment of the geotechnical conditions in order to aid in the selection of a single preferred site. The three sites were identified by Eskom based on desktop studies. The sites are located on the farm Olyvenhouts Drift and are referred to as:

• Site 1 (18 km east of Upington)

• Site 5 (11 km south east of Upington)

• Site 6 (14 km south east of Upington) The locations of the sites are indicated in Figures 1a to 1c, overleaf. The field investigations were carried out from the 16th to the 22nd of October 2012 and entailed the following:

• The excavation 60 trial pits (20 trial pits at each site)

• Recovery of selected disturbed samples for laboratory testing This report has being prepared prior to the results of laboratory testing being available. The interpretation of the subsurface conditions at the substation sites is based on the ground conditions observed in widely spaced trial pits and is intended to provide information for initial planning purposes only. Further investigations will be required for detailed design purposes. 2. APPOINTMENT The investigation requirements were provided by Eskom in the document titled “Specification and Scope for a Preliminary Geotechnical Investigation for Evaluation of Three Sites: Proposed New Solar Park Substation near Upington in the Northern Cape”. The Task Order was received from Eskom on the 11th of October 2012, order number 4501452489.

2.1. Information Available

Preliminary layout plans for each substation site, including the location of each trial pit, were provided by Eskom. Longitudinal sections through the cut-to-fill platforms were also provided.

3. SITE DESCRIPTION The proposed sites are located east to south east of Upington in the Northern Cape Province. The sites may be accessed via a gravel district road (D3276) off the N14 national road. Access to the sites off D3276 is via sand tracks and through the veld.

3.1. Topography and Drainage

Topography of the general area is gently undulating. There are no significant drainage features on or near the sites.

3.2. Vegetation, Landuse and Existing Infrastructure

The climate at Upington is arid and the natural vegetation of the area is classified as Kalahari Karroid Schrubland or Gordonia Duneveld. The vegetation consists of sparse grassland with scattered small bushes. The land at all three sites is used for extensive grazing. There is no infrastructure on the sites themselves.

3.3. Access

As mentioned in Section 1, access to the sites may be obtained via farm tracks off the gravel district road (D3276). Vehicle access to Sites 5 and 6 is via farm tracks which pass near the site boundaries. Site 1 is located approximately 800 m from the nearest track. Vehicle access within the sites is possible for 4x4 vehicles through the open veld.

4. GEOLOGY The geology of the area is illustrated in the extract of the 1:250 000 scale Geological Map 2820 Upington published by the Council for Geoscience (1990 edition), included as Figure 2. The geology consists of soils and pedogenic materials underlain by igneous granitoid rocks. According to above mentioned geological map, the sites are underlain by the following:

Gordonia Formation (Qg) of the Kalahari Group The Kalahari Group consists of an extensive body of terrestrial sediments of Cenozoic age. The Gordonia Formation consists of red aeolian sands that cover most of the underlying Kalahari Group sediments. The sands consist of rounded quarts grains coloured by a thin coating of haematite. The deposits are informally known as Kalahari sands (Johnson, et. al. 2006). Mokalanen Formation (T) of the Kalahari Group The calcretes indicated on the geological map belong to the Mokalanen Formation. This formation consists of sandy limestone and an overlying conglomerate with a calcareous matrix (Johnson, et. al. 2006). The calcretes encountered on site may either belong to the Mokalanen Formation or, more commonly, are expected to be younger pedogenic deposits. Louisvale Granite (Ml) of the Keimoes Suite The geological map 2820 Upington indicates that the bedrock geology beneath the Kalahari Group sediments comprises a stratigraphic unit of the Keimoes Suite known as the Louisvale Granite, which is described as “light grey, moderately to well foliated granite”. The name Louisvale Granite has been dropped from the latest stratigraphy (Johnson, et. al. 2006). The Keimoes Suite forms part of the intrusive phase of the Namaqua-Natal province. The rocks are granitoid in composition and the suite consists of a number of plutonic bodies ranging in composition from granodiorite to alkali granite. Common rock types are biotite-rich granites that are equigranular and weakly to moderately foliated. It is noted that the suite will likely be subdivided once further research is carried out and the rocks are reliably dated (Johnson, et. al. 2006).

5. CLIMATE The climatic regime plays a fundamental role in the development of a soil profile and the weathering of rock. Weinert (1964) demonstrated that chemical decomposition is the predominant mode of rock weathering in areas where his climatic “N-value” is less than 5. In areas where the climatic N-value is between 5 and 10, disintegration is the predominant form of weathering, although some chemical decomposition of the primary rock minerals still takes place. Where the climatic N-value is greater than 10, secondary minerals do not develop to an appreciable extent and all weathering takes place by mechanical disintegration of the rock. Weinert’s climatic N-value for the Upington area is approximately 35. This implies that the climate is arid and that the development of secondary minerals is not expected. 6. FIELDWORK The fieldwork was undertaken between the 16th to the 22nd of October 2012.

6.1. Trial Pits

Twenty trial pits were excavated at each site (60 trial pits in total) using a JCB Tractor-Loader-Backhoe (TLB) fitted with a 300 mm wide bucket (“narrow bucket”). The use of a narrow bucket is considered to provide a penetration advantage over the typical 700 mm diameter bucket in hard ground conditions. However, a 700 mm wide bucket was used to excavate trial pits TP3 to TP6 at Site 6 when the 300 mm bucket sheared and was being repaired. The trial pits were typically excavated to the refusal depth of the TLB, although some were terminated at shallower depth in the fill sections of the platform once suitable founding material had been reached. It must be noted that very slow excavation rates were achieved within the hardpan calcrete and weathered rock. Although the TLB was able to penetrate this material, the inference that the material is classified as soft excavation (or even intermediate excavation in certain cases) may not hold true. The depth of the trial pits ranged from 0.30 to 2.20 m with an average depth of approximately 1.1 m. The trial pits were profiled immediately after excavation by our Engineering Geologist and photographed. The locations of the trial pits are indicated in the Geotechnical Investigation Layout plans provided in Appendix A and the trial pit profiles and photographs of typical soil profiles are contained in Appendix B and C, respectively.

7. GENERAL ASSESSMENT OF THE GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS In general terms, a broadly similar soil profile was encountered at all three sites. However the thickness of the soil horizons differed among the sites. The typical material types encountered in the trial pits are described below.

7.1. Ground Conditions

The generalised soil profile consists of aeolian sands underlain by calcrete (in various forms) underlain in turn by weathered or hard granitic rock. Transported or residual gravel layers occur sporadically within the soil profile. The trial pit logs are contained in Appendix A.

7.1.1. Aeolian Sands

Aeolian sands, generally described as loose to very loose, gritty, silty sand, were encountered in the vast majority of trial pits from surface to typical depths of between 0.30 to 0.80 m (up to a maximum depth of 1.30 m). The thickness of the soil often varied with topography, with thicker soils being encountered in the lower-lying areas. Aeolian sands of the Kalahari Group are known to have a potentially collapsible grain structure. Many of the soils were described as having a weakly developed open-voided (pinhole) structure, although this was not observed at all test positions. An open-voided soil structure is characteristic of a potentially collapsible soil. Due to the presence of undulating hardpan calcrete and calcrete boulders within soil profile, the thickness of the aeolian sands was found to be variable within the individual test pits at numerous test positions. This phenomenon is discussed further in Section 7.1.3. Sidewall collapse within the aeolian sands was observed at numerous test positions.

7.1.2. Transported or Residual / Reworked Gravel

Gravelly soils interpreted to be of either transported or residual origin were commonly observed in the trial pits. A horizon of gravelly soil consisting of loose to medium dense, fine to medium sized gravel in a silty sand matrix was observed in a large proportion of the test pits. The horizon was relatively thin, variable, discontinuous and occurred at the contact between the aeolian sand and the underlying calcrete or weathered rock. The gravel was of variable origin, but typically consisted of vein quartz, calcrete and fragments of weathered bedrock. Gravelly soil interpreted to be re-worked residual granitic soil was encountered in a large proportion of the trial pits. The material was typically described as fine (quartz) gravel in a silty sand matrix and varied in consistency from loose to dense. The re-worked residual soil was often encountered between or underlying hardpan calcrete.

7.1.3. Pedogenic Calcrete

Pedogenic calcrete was encountered in 52 of the 60 trial pits and weakly calcified material was observed in some of the remaining test pits. The calcrete was encountered in various forms, but was typically hardpan calcrete with lesser nodular and honeycomb calcrete. The calcrete was normally encountered beneath the aeolian soils and extended to a maximum of approximately 1.0 to 1.2 m depth. Calcrete boulders were often observed within the aeolian sands. Hardpan calcrete was typically described at white to beige in colour and was generally cemented to strongly cemented. Large calcrete boulders were common within the trial pits. Very slow and difficult excavation conditions were observed within the hardpan calcrete. Although the TLB was able to penetrate through weaker or fractured zones within the hardpan calcrete at a large proportion of the test positions, refusal on hardpan was a common occurrence. A large proportion of the hardpan calcrete and calcrete boulders were described as “hard rock” consistency and will not break down under compaction. The occurrence of hardpan calcrete was highly variable over short distances, both laterally and vertically within the individual trial pits. Concretions of hardpan calcrete were often surrounded by loose to very loose sandy or gravelly soils. Bands of hardpan calcrete were found to be underlain by loose material at some test positions. However the thickness of the looser material was generally limited. Where the trial pits were able to penetrate through the calcrete, the underlying material was typically weathered granitoid rock. The parent material for some of the hardpan calcrete was observed to be weathered granite rock and bands of weathered rock occurred within the calcrete at many test positions.

7.1.4. Weathered Granitoid Rock

Weathered bedrock was encountered in 46 of the 60 trial pits at depths ranging from 0.30 to 1.30 m below ground level. Excavation into weathered bedrock at the remaining trial pits was not possible due to refusal of the TLB on hardpan calcrete. The bedrock encountered at Site 5 and Site 6 was typically described as white speckled light grey and grey, medium to coarse grained granite or granite gneiss. The rock showed varying degrees of weathering, ranging from highly weathered to medium weathered and was typically soft becoming medium hard rock hardness with depth, although hard rock was observed in some trial pits.

Jeffares & Green (Pty) Ltd ESKOM

3167/1 October 2012 Eskom Solar Park Substations - Upington Factual Geotechnical Report 8

The bedrock observed at Site 1 showed more variation than the rock observed at Sites 5 and 6 and was described as ranging in composition from granite, granite gneiss to schist. The depth of penetration of the TLB into the weathered rock ranged from an average of 0.18 m at Site 1 to 0.52 m at Site 6.

7.2. Groundwater

Groundwater seepage was not observed in any of the trial pits.

8. COMPARATIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE SITES A summary of the ground conditions encountered in the trial pits at each site is provided in Tables 8.1 to 8.3. The investigation indicates that a broadly similar soil profile was encountered at all three sites. However the important differences were noted in the average thickness of the aeolian sands, depth to bedrock and hardness of the bedrock between the sites.

Site 1 Site 5 Site 6 Average thickness of aeolian sands: 0.27 m 0.34 m 0.64 m Average depth to weathered bedrock (Where encountered in the trial pits) 0.77 m 0.73 m 0.96 m Average excavation depth into bedrock 0.18 m 0.36 m 0.52 m

9. CONCLUSIONS This factual report contains the results of the geotechnical field investigations undertaken at three alternative sites for the proposed construction of a substation near Upington in the Northern Cape. The investigation indicates that a broadly similar soil profile exists at all three sites. However the important differences were noted in the average thickness of the aeolian sands, depth to bedrock and hardness of the bedrock between the sites. Further discussion on the suitability of the sites for the proposed construction of cut to fill platforms will be provided once the results of laboratory testing of soil samples are available. 10.
