But how we break through those walls is what makes us who we are. I've learned a few things from the walls that have tried to hold me back. And now I've turned what I've learned into four rock solid steps. Use these

four steps to help you successfully break through the walls in your life.

Walls can pop up during the worst times in your life. Maybe you've hit an energy wall, where you don't have enough juice to keep going. Or maybe there's an emotional wall, someone does something that you don't expect. And when you're at the bottom of the wall, man, does it look high from down here!

See that's the thing about life. It has no script. And a lot of times I hear people say, "I just don't think I can over-come this particular wall."

But the truth is, you've already overcome so many walls in your life and you don't even know it. I bet if you

stop and think, you'd say to yourself, "Wow, I've already overcome so much." Whether

it's in your job or personal life, you've overcome a lot already.

Think about it. Let's take your job. You had to overcome a wall of all those other applicants to get where you are. And you got the job. You broke through. Or in your personal life, if you've ever had to go on a date, you've

overcome whatever expectation, good or bad, the other person had. And on and on and on. You've got it in you!

I'll be the first to admit that some setbacks are bigger than others. Like the time my wife was rushed to the hos-pital. She was in Montana, pregnant with our second child, and I was in Texas. She ended up in the ER be-cause of complications from the baby and it took me a whole day to get to her. Believe me, it was the longest day of my life.

But the strategy that we used to get through it helped us both tremendously. And I've broken it down into

four steps that you can achieve. They can be used in any situation. They worked for me and I know they can work for you.

WE ALL HIT THE WALL SOMETIMES...

Healthy, Wealthy, Happy: 4 HABITS OF REMARKABLY SUCCESSFUL PEOPLE

STEP ONE: NEVER GIVE UP

If you give up, it's over. That's it. There's nothing else. You don't get past your wall, you're stuck. And

that's exactly why you cannot give up. That's the foundation that the other three steps are built upon.

Sure, it may seem easy to give up. It may seem like less work. It's easier to sit down than to keep going. It may even seem like it's the safer choice. We all want to give up, it's only natural. Why risk getting hurt?

But if you don't risk anything, you won't get anything. And that's what breaking through those wall is all about. The only way to find out what's on the other side of that wall is break through it. And the only way to do that is to

NEVER GIVE UP.

With my wife in the hospital, giving up wasn't even an option. It was a matter of life and death. We had a baby who was completely dependent on us and our actions. Was I going to give up on my wife and child? Never.

STEP TWO: STAY POSITIVE

This is a tough one. We're all human and the part of your mind that goes toward the negative is natural. It's an an-cient part of our brain, designed to keep us alive. If we can't imagine the negative, we won't know what to do. But sometimes that negativity takes over. And that's bad news if you want to break through that wall.

As humans, we're able to see all of the scenarios before us. We're the only animals that can do this, that can see into our future and imagine what makes us happy and what makes us sad. And sometimes people go toward the nega-tive because it makes sense to them. They feel like happiness isn't possible. And that's another wall.

But staying positive is the key to breaking through that wall of negativity. It allows you

to focus on what you want and relax enough to achieve it. By staying positive you can work towards what your goal is. You can break through the wall because that positive outcome is what you want. You understand that the wall is bad and needs to be removed. How do we do that? We stay positive.

With my wife in the hospital, we only imagined good positive outcomes. Staying positive is the food that feeds your sanity. Hope is the strongest vitamin you can take. Do it and every decision

after that will come naturally and calmly.

STEP THREE: LOOK AHEAD

Imagine if we were chipping away at an actual wall with an axe. And then, in the middle of it all, we stopped to exam-ine a part of the wall that we just chipped away. We're looking at it and now we've stopped chipping away at the wall. What's happening? We're not making forward progress. That wall won't come down on its own, that's for sure!

Looking ahead is important because it keeps you focused. It keeps the goal in mind, what's on

the other side of the wall. And by staying positive, you can imagine what it will take to get you there.

That time in the hospital, we looked ahead to the life that we would have with our baby. And we looked ahead to the great job that the doctors would do. Looking ahead and envisioning that positive outcome made those hours less worrisome.

STEP FOUR: DO ALL THAT YOU CAN

You are the best resource that you have. And like a lot of resources, you can't save some of you for tomorrow.

What if there is no tomorrow? Do you want to go home and imagine that you didn't give

something your all? That you didn't do all that you can do? Of course not.

Doing all that you can do is the only way to break through the walls in your life that are holding you back. The

stronger the wall, the more you'll need to stick to this particular step. It's the one that requires both physical and mental action from you. It's a way to measure how much you want something. If

you want to break through those walls in your life, you'll have to do all that you can do.

Doing all I could do meant not only being there for my wife, but also doing what I could for myself, in my

mind. That meant resting, eating well, and interacting with the doctors to get as much information as I could. I didn’t want to be caught unaware by anyone or anything. Doing all you can

do sometimes means fortifying your mind as well as your body.

DIANA NYAD’S DREAM

There are plenty of examples in real life of people applying these four steps. The one that I'm really inspired by is the story of Diana Nyad. You may remember that she swam from Cuba to Key West a few years ago. She swam!

How did she do it?

It began with a dream at the age of 8. She simply wanted to swim from Cuba to Florida. A simple dream, but one that she knew she could achieve. So she held on to that dream until she could first try it. And she did...at the age of 28. And she failed. Who wouldn't? That's 90 miles of swimming!

But she wouldn't give up on her dream and that dream stayed with her. She tried again, three

other times, after that. Each time she got further, she pushed through the walls of her previous time. She didn't give up. She stayed positive, knowing she could do it. She looked ahead (which is essential in swimming!). And she did all she could do, which meant trying again even when giving up seemed to be the easier path.

She finally did it in 2013. She inspired an entire planet. At the age of 64. What began 35 years earlier was finally

completed after 53 grueling hours in the water. Her wall was broken.

I don't know if you've ever been aware at the moment that you've broken through a wall, but it's a powerful feeling. And when you do it once, not only do you want to do it again and again, but more importantly, you

realize that it's doable. That the many walls that seem too tall to climb or too big to beat, are in fact just walls. And every wall is breakable.

Can you imagine what would have happened if Diana hadn't followed the four steps?

Imagine if she had given up. There were many reasons she could have used as an excuse to not challenge herself. Her age, for one. She was 64! Lots of folks that age just quietly retire, sit around, and don't do much. That would have been fine. But not for her. She did not give up on that challenge she had given herself at 28.

Imagine if she hadn't stayed positive. Imagine if she had let doubt build that wall to an even greater height than it

already was. She later said ''Whenever you’re pushing through the tough moments, find a way. If something is important to you and it looks impossible and you’re up against it,

step back for a minute and ask yourself if you have the resolve to think of every -nth degree to get through this. And most times, we do.”

Imagine if she hadn't looked ahead. In her case, it was a matter of life and death. She had to look ahead and prepare for all the challenges that awaited her in the water. Hunger, thirst, sharks, jellyfish, and dehydration were all things that she had to look ahead to. To not look ahead is to give in to fear. It's easy to ignore those challenges ahead of you. But it's impossible to break through the walls if you don't look ahead.

And she did all she could do. Well, there's no doubting her on that score. The results say it all. 53 hours! I can't drive for more than three hours at a time before I need to pull over and stretch!

But she did it. She broke through that watery wall.
