About JenxJenx was founded by a paediatric physiotherapist and a product designer in 1982, with the aim of enriching lives and changing perceptions about disability.

Our innovative postural support products are developed with care and expertise to help children with special postural needs to live happy and fulfilling lives. By working closely with children, carers and therapists we create products that put people first.

For more than quarter of a century Jenx has been researching, designing and making pioneering developmental furniture that supports children as they grow.

Our products are underpinned by years of experience and commitment to helping children and families achieve greater independence and freedom. Because of this, Jenx makes a real difference to lives, enabling children to experience a wider range of activities in comfort.

Every position a child adopts has an effect on their development and functional movement both now and in the future, and we strive to provide the support children need to help them to flourish.

Over the years Jenx has become the UK’s most respected company dedicated to developmental furniture for children. Every day we apply our expertise in paediatric therapy and innovative design to finding better ways to help children with special postural support needs.

We believe in putting people first and building strong, supportive relationships with our customers. Experienced product advisers can offer information and guidance, and would be glad to visit you to discuss how the Jenx range could help you.

All our products are made in Sheffield, England, to exacting safety standards.

“ By working closely with children, carers and therapists we create products that put people first”

For many children, sitting positions can be difficult to maintain. Jenx seats are designed to support children with all kinds of postural needs, in a wide range of situations.

Seating

6

jenx.com/products/seating

Catalogue 2010 / 2011

Hip position is critical as it provides the foundation upon which a child’s overall posture is based. Once the pelvis is secure, the feet can be supported, either by resting freely on the support surface or held in position with sandals. Support for the spine may be necessary and also for the head.

Jenx seating products can be adjusted easily to increase function, relaxation or activity.

Features such as Recline, where the angle at the hips is increased, or Tilt-in-Space, where the whole system is tilted in space whilst maintaining the individual joint postures, offer real flexibility for children, carers and therapists. The range of adjustment in Jenx seating provides children with a sound postural start from which functional movement can follow.

JuniorJunior offers children with a wide range of seating needs the opportunity to get active with others. Its unique design gives excellent pelvic stability, and the optional Ischial Bar helps to prevent a child from sliding down in the seat.

Comfortable contoured modular seating system. Available in three sizes to suit the needs of children aged between 1 and 12 years.

Page 15: Jenx Catalogue 2011

Junior is moulded in PU, which offers excellent support, easy cleaning and no issues with liquid becoming absorbed into the foam. It can be wiped down using antibacterial wipes or spray.

Junior offers conventional, reclined and Tilt-in-Space settings and has lots of adjustment to accommodate children of different sizes and proportions. It has a fabulous range of cover colour options so children can customise the look of their Junior to their own taste. Covers can be washed, and a basic PU cover is included for use while your child’s colourful favourite is being laundered.

The Y-base offers a great range of seat height options and the hydraulic system reduces the amount of work involved in making height alterations, therefore protecting carers whilst supporting children.

Children who have high muscle tone in their legs may well find that sitting in abduction helps to reduce their tone and make sitting more comfortable.

Adjustable floor based seating

system for infants and young children.

Corner Seat

The Corner Seat is available in three sizes to suit children from six months to approximately 10 years.

It offers children support in long sitting, which is children’s usual first sitting position. Long sitting, with the legs stretched out in front, helps to maintain the length of the muscles behind the knee.

Page 35: Jenx Catalogue 2011

SEATING

31

The Corner Seat has an adjustable height back and can be used with or without the upper back support. An abduction block is used to help keep your child well positioned, with their hips neatly back into the seat. The corner shape helps to maintain your child in midline and, if you prefer to have a flat back with wings at the side, there are small triangular cushions available to place at the back to provide this setting.

The corner seat is an ideal first seat for any child, and can be used with the Jenx Nursery Table. Small touch and close tape straps are used to keep the two products safely connected to each other whilst in use.

Design

When a new product idea is initiated, wide ranging consultation leads to the creation of a detailed product brief that outlines a clear set of objectives. The next stage is to develop and evaluate a series of concept sketches before taking the most successful ideas through to the prototype stage.

Designs are developed using CAD and prototypes are created in our development workshops. At various stages, prototypes

are tested internally for strength and stability and externally for fitness for purpose and other considerations. This process continues until we have a model that meets all the objectives of the development brief.

The model is now brought into production. This involves another series of tests and verification procedures to ensure that we now have an exceptional quality Jenx product ready to launch.

Every Jenx product is the outcome of a thorough design process, which draws on input from therapists, carers, our own experts and wider research developments in the field.

Design | The Design Process

Initial ideas for a new product come from working closely with parents, therapists and children themselves

A detailed product brief is written after wide ranging consultation and research

Preliminary sketches are made and evaluated against the product brief; the most successful concepts are further developed

The first prototype is made then tested and evaluated at our innovation centres

The design is refined and developed, and new prototypes made, until the product meets the exacting requirements of the brief

Catalogue 2010 / 2011

Standing

Children gain huge psychological benefits from standing, as well as important physical and developmental advantages. So standing plays a crucial role in therapy programmes for children with many kinds of developmental needs.

There’s no such thing as standing still. To achieve balance and stability while standing requires tiny movements of all the main joints of the foot, leg, hip and spine. It requires control of lots of different areas of the body, and takes time and practise to achieve.

The Jenx range of standing frames offers a wide variety of standing positions to address every child’s needs. And because standing is such a dynamic process, our products are designed to support standing by allowing joints to be mobile in order to help to train balance and encourage development.

Supine Stander is a robust standing support that offers children comfort and safety whilst standing. Children are supported at the back, leaving their hands free to access items on a tray or table in front of them. Free from the work of standing, your child can devote his or her attention to the activities they wish to take part in, while their whole body posture is protected by comfortable straps and supports.

In order to reduce manual handling, children can be hoisted onto Supine Stander and the supports put in place before the stander is brought into a more upright position. Children often tolerate this mode of standing well and can enjoy activities that are difficult for them to access in sitting.

In the therapy situation, Supine Stander offers support for many function enhancing therapy activities such as standing balance and weight transfers.

Prone Stander is dedicated to assisted prone standing – child supported at the front, and offers a continuous range of angles so the optimum position for each child can be achieved.

Prone Stander has good looks and sound functions to make standing enjoyable and practical for your child, and simple for you to achieve. The individual support pads can be adjusted in relation to each other to ensure every child can be properly supported. Children with longer bodies and shorter legs can be just as comfortable as those with shorter bodies and longer legs. Prone Stander is great for every child.

The sturdy hip and chest straps are closed in the centre and then adjusted by pulling from either side. This feature, common to many Jenx Products, encourages symmetry. Once the straps are secured, the integral safety strap is fastened to complement the postural support. This helps to prevent other children suddenly releasing a strap. It is important always to use the safety strap and to fasten it as far as possible to maximise its usefulness.

Monkey offers prone standing – standing supported in front – with a continuous range of standing angle adjustment of between 20 degrees from the horizontal to upright. Because children often have quite subtle reactions to standing angle, we have designed Monkey to allow the angle to be adjusted smoothly and simply, even whilst your child is using the product. This enables you to ensure the best standing angle each time your child chooses to stand.

Monkey’s chest and hip supports can be adjusted independently of each other. This means that not only can Monkey be adjusted to precisely suit each child’s proportions, but also that the two pads can be adjusted to leave space between them to accommodate a feeding button, for instance, and prevent pressure over it whilst standing – an important consideration for your child’s wellbeing and comfort. Side supports are adjustable in many different directions to exactly match a child’s needs, improving comfort and the efficacy of his or her standing. So no monkey business, just great function-enhancing performance.

Quality Assurance

All our working practices adhere to strict quality systems. Every time a process is initiated – whether it is in manufacturing, sales or administration – a written procedure is created for all team members to follow. Each procedure is audited regularly and the results are carefully evaluated and acted upon.

In a changing environment, this approach ensures that Jenx remains efficient, effective

and relevant, and provides our customers with peace of mind that every order will be fulfilled on time and made to the same exacting standards.

The Post Sales Vigilance Process allows us to analyse the performance of a product and feed that information back into the design process. This ensures that our products are constantly being improved in a very real way.

All Jenx products are manufactured in Sheffield, England, and we have been awarded the right to use the prestigious ‘Made in Sheffield’ mark, which is internationally recognised as a stamp of exceptional quality.

Jenx holds ISO 9001:2008 certification.

Lying is usually how we like to rest, and Jenx has designed a range of products that offer children optimum postural support while they relax or sleep in comfort.

Each product allows the child to experience better quality rest by reducing the unwanted action of postural reflexes and asymmetrical muscle tone. Each lying posture or attitude – whether that is on his or her front (prone), back (supine) or side – will affect a child’s level of relaxation and potential for movement.

Jenx products are designed to enhance the lives of children by supporting postures that enable function now, whilst preventing or delaying loss of functional movement in the future. We are committed to helping children fulfill their whole potential as they grow into adults.

We probably spend more time in our sleeping position than we do in any other. Children need appropriate support at rest in order to sleep well and wake refreshed. For carers, the knowledge that a child

is safe and comfortable enables them to relax and get a good night’s sleep themselves. Dreama has been designed to address these two fundamental needs and to provide so much more.

A pressure relieving mattress and posture support system combined. Suitable for all ages.

Page 75: Jenx Catalogue 2011

Dreama is the only fully-fashioned, pressure relieving mattress available that also offers postural support in prone, supine and side lying. Its simple design means Dreama requires no difficult fastening, no nuts and bolts, no noisy touch and close tape and no extra overlays.

It simply changes the lives of children and their families for the better.

Dreama can be used on any bed that is at least 90cm (3’) wide. The base is flexible to allow it to be contoured to support partial sitting or raising of feet, for example.

The individual cushions are pressure relieving and covered with welded PU material to prevent liquid being absorbed into the foam. The PU fabric is two-way stretch, which enhances the pressure relieving quality of the foam, and is also water resistant and antibacterial.

Carers and users have praised Dreama for the exceptional difference it has made to their sleep experience.

It is much-loved for offering comfort beyond expectations, security of supports, versatility of use and for its sheer simplicity. Sleep should be one of the most relaxing times of the day for everyone in the family and Dreama can help it to become just that.

The therapists we come into contact with are an innovative lot and we are consistently amazed by the new ideas we see in action. These might be ways to treat more children with a dwindling budget or to speed up waiting times, or new treatment practices and other innovations that improve the lives of children, families and carers.

Over the years entries have ranged from sessions that help teaching staff identify

children with dyspraxia and gain the correct professional interventions, to systems for evaluating the efficacy of a particular treatment or therapy in a target group.

To enter, the innovation should be described in 1,000 words or less with back up materials attached if necessary. The prize is £1,500 to spend on taking the idea further.

Each year we offer one award to paediatric physiotherapists and one to paediatric occupational therapists.

Side Lying Boards offer supported comfort to children while resting or during play activities. Side lying is a great position in which to recharge and also for joining in with classroom activities. Side lying takes away the worry that children with low muscle tone may rest with their spine curved. In this position your child’s spine is fully supported.

The Jenx Advanced Side Lying Board has a number of standard components that help to improve your child’s posture even more. Your child’s top leg can be supported by a bridge that allows the lower leg some movement while keeping the upper hip in a neutral or abducted position.

This product comes on a plinth to bring it up to waist height, which means ease of hoisting and less manual handling for carers.
