Powerpoint Jeopardy

Most of us are familiar with the popular television game, Jeopardy. I have designed thisgame for use in my TEFL classes with a computer and display capability running

Microsoft oweroint. I use oweroint as a basis for most of my TEFL lessons in order

to highlight learning points, display pictures and graphics, add audio, etc. I had playedJeopardy with my classes before and subse!uently found that oweroint lent itself well

to the game. It is then easily customi"ed with different categories and clues. This

particular version is customi"ed for eace #orps $omania with topics suited to middleschool students. I%ve done it with high school as well. &ere%s how it wor's(

The screen )slide *+ after the -elcome to Jeopardy/ screen displays five categories and

their respective values ranging from 01 to 21 )Lei, 3ollars, Euros, points, whatever youli'e. hen a student selects a category and point value you simply use the category as

the first digit and the value as the second digit to enter a slide number. For e4ample,

selecting the first category and the 015point value would result in slide *00. Li'ewise,

selecting the third category and the 215point value would result in slide *+2. 6fter thestudent ma'es a selection, simply type the number and press the enter 'ey. 7ou will

immediately advance to that slide. The clue will be displayed. 8ive the student)contestant time to say their !uestion for that clue and then press the enter 'ey to see the

correct !uestion. Then simply type in the number + again )to go bac' to slide *+, the

categories screen and press enter.

9ome comments. :ne capability we don%t have in using oweroint is the ability to

mar' off or in some way change the individual categories;values to indicate which ones

contestants have already selected. It would be a great feature to have if it could be donein oweroint )it could be done if the game were developed using Flash or something

similar, but I simply do this by noting the clues already chosen on the blac'board or flipchart.

There are a number of blan' slides. This, obviously, is because the numbering scheme

for Jeopardy needs slides 00502, <05<2, etc. for the respective categories;values but doesnot re!uire numbers in between those ranges. =lan' slides must be there as fillers,

however, to get the re!uired Jeopardy screens at the proper slide numbers. #lear as mud>

It may be a bit confusing at first and not all that elegant, but it%s really !uite simple and

effective to ma'e the game wor'.

6lso, when a category and value is selected, I could have the clue automatically

displayed. &owever, I chose to have that not displayed until a mouse clic' or enter 'eyso that an inadvertent e4tra clic' after entering the slide number would not accidentally

show the correct !uestion immediately after displaying the clue. This can, of course, be

easily modified if you prefer to have the clue automatically displayed when advancing toa chosen slide.

Finally, there are no -3aily 3oubles/ or -Final Jeopardy/ in here in order to 'eep the

game and its rules simple, though either of these would be easy to add, if you should

desire.
