Beginning in July of 2005, Jeppesenwill incorporate lightning data fromthe U.S. Precision LightningNetwork (USPLN) in our weathermaps. USPLN is a partnershipbetween TOA Systems and WeatherDecision Technologies (WDT). TOASystems designed, built, and installed

the lightning sensors, and WDToperates the network with TOA,distributes the lightning data, andprovides applications that displaythe data.

Jeppesen has become a value-addedreseller for the USPLN data and willinclude the data in our weather products beginning this July. TheUSPLN uses innovative technologythat allows the detection of bothcloud to ground (CG) lightning aswell as within cloud (CC, IC, CA)lightning. Normally, more than 70percent of all lightning strikes arewithin cloud type lightning, which is very pertinent to aviation.Previously, only cloud to groundlightning data was available fromthe National Lightning DetectionNetwork operated by Vaisala(formerly Global AtmosphericsIncorporated). Jeppesen will providethe total lightning picture that isavailable from the USPLN.

Another benefit that the USPLNoffers is an extended geographic coverage. The USPLN network consists of approximately 90 sensorsacross the United States. The normalrange of the sensors is around 500miles, but using ionospheric skiptechnology, some lightning can be

detected thousands of miles fromthe sensors. The normal detection efficiency of the USPLN is greaterthan 95 percent with strike locationaccuracy within 250 meters. However, detection efficiency andaccuracy decrease as distance fromthe sensors increases. Even so, theUSPLN regularly detects lightningstrikes as far away as northernCanada, the Caribbean, Mexico andLatin America, northern SouthAmerica, and the eastern Pacific outto Hawaii. The corresponding mapshows actual lightning strikesoverlaid with infrared satelliteimagery. You can see how faraway lightning is detected andhow well it corresponds withsatellite imagery.

Jeppesen will offer USPLN lightningdata as separate maps that areupdated every 10-15 minutes, as well as include lightning data withInfrared and Visible satellite images. In areas outside of the NEXRADradar network, lightning data is the best way to determine ifconvective activity and thunderstormsare present.

Our display software allows us toshow past lightning as well ascurrent activity, so we can see trendsin the activity. This is helpful indetermining if a thunderstorm isgrowing or decaying and showingthe movement of the active cells.

We feel that the addition of theUSPLN lightning data to Jeppesenweather products is another step inproviding the best aviation weatherinformation to our customers. Withthe recent additions of a NEXRADforecast product, worldwideturbulence and icing maps, and nowthe USPLN lightning data, Jeppesenis at the forefront of state of the artaviation weather products. We arecommitted and solely focused onaviation weather products that addvalue to the customer, and help youmake more informed decisionsabout your flight.
