TEACHING EXPERIENCE

2008 to Present Middle School Special Education Teacher, Murray Hill Middle School, Laurel, MDDuties include co-teaching, differentiating, and case managing students in seventh and eighth grade at Murray Hill Middle School. Special educators are expected to co-construct and co-develop content for seventh and eight grade English and Math with a general educator to ensure best practices are being used in the classroom. Other duties include managing a caseload of students with disabilities to insure that their accommodations and modifications are being met, as well as, maintain the compliancy of their Individualized Education Plan. This includes collecting the data utilized to measure the students’ success in achieving their IEP goals. This requires me to work with educators from other subject areas such as Science, Social Studies, and Reading. It is also expected that I manage the teaching assistants and close adult supervisors on my grade level which requires frequent contact and team meetings. During my time at Murray Hill Middle School, I have also been active in ALT-MSA which is a standardized test which requires students with significant disabilities to create a portfolio of work that demonstrates skill mastery on objectives based on the regular MSA state standardized test. This process is yearlong. I have also been active in the after-school tutorial services, teaching remediation courses in both Math and Reading.

Duties included teaching sixth, seventh, and eight grade Social Sciences inside the Lighthouse Point Academy. The Lighthouse Point Academy is a Special Education Academy attached to the North Broward Preparatory Schools. Duties attached to this position were to use a wide array of multi-modal instructional strategies that were based in databased best practices targeted for the individualized instruction of each student. As of 2007, I have also taken on a sixth class for Honor Students in World Cultures II. Further, as a college preparatory program, additional duties were the implementation of Florida standards-based curriculum, introducing Internet and research skills on a daily basis, and project-based activities. Responsibilities also included bi-weekly uploading of students’ grades to Edline from GradeQuick, which consisted of boiler plates and student comments, weekly on-line assignment pages, lunch duty, hallway proctoring, daily advisory instruction, weekly after school tutoring, curriculum mapping, and developing yearly Social Sciences curriculum.

2007 Summer School Teacher, North Broward Preparatory School, Coconut Creek, FLDeveloped a summer school curriculum for new 5th grade students entering into the 6th grade. Students were introduced to computer skills, middle school curriculum, the school’s Honor Code System, and other expectations for middle school.

2005 - 2006 Middle School Social Science and English Long Term Substitute, Howard Gardner School for Discovery, Scranton, PA

Instructed and developed curriculum for seventh and eight grade Social Sciences and English. In English, students were taught the 6+1 Writing traits, five-paragraph essay writing, and process writing. They were introduced to Shakespeare’s work through reenactment of his famous play, Julius Caesar. They were also introduced to a wide array of multicultural literature, poetry, fiction, and short stories. In Social Sciences, students were taught how to access web information, summarize, and cite resource information from various sources. Curriculum also included World Cultures and American History that relied heavily on teacher created materials as the school followed a multi-modal pedagogy.
