Steps to Successful Literature presents exceptional performance literature — concert and festival pieces — for beginning to intermediate string orchestras. Each piece is correlated with a specific location in String Basics – Steps to Success for String Orchestra Comprehensive Method by Terry Shade, Jeremy Woolstenhulme, and Wendy Barden. Literature reinforces musical skills, concepts, and terms introduced in the method. Sometimes, a few new concepts are included. They are officially introduced and described in the score and parts.
The ComposerJeremy Woolstenhulme received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Brigham Young University in 2000 and a Master of Arts degree in cello performance from the University of Nevada in 2005.
Mr. Woolstenhulme currently serves as the orchestra director at Hyde Park Middle School in the Clark County School District of Las Vegas, Nevada, where he teaches approximately 400 students daily. His orchestra was selected to play at the 2008 Midwest Clinic, and in 2010 and 2011, at the National ASTA Conference. He has traveled with his orchestras to London, Washington, D.C., Boston, San Diego, New York, and Orlando, and in 2011, he was a guest conductor for the Queensland Honor Orchestra at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Also in 2011, he received a “Teacher of the Game” award presented by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, MGM Resorts, Channel 8 News, and the Clark County School District.
Mr. Woolstenhulme is a contract member of the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He is also the cellist for the Seasons String Quartet, and he performs as a freelance musician at many entertainment
venues in Las Vegas. He is a commissioned and published composer and author with a number of original and arranged works for string and full orchestra to his credit. Mr. Woolstenhulme is co-author, with Terry Shade and Wendy Barden, of the highly acclaimed string method, String Basics.
Mr. Woolstenhulme and his wife Taryn, live in Las Vegas with their three children, Cadence Belle, Coda Blake, and Canon Thomas.
Basics About the CompositionRain Festival offers a fun way to reinforce syncopation. It also gives young players the opportunity to create different moods and sounds outside the realm of traditional classical music. Lively and accessible percussion parts included in this selection help establish and sustain strong pulse. Rain Festival works well as a concert closer, is a fun pops concert piece, and is a popular choice for recruitment performances.SA

Program NotesMake sure your umbrellas are close by! Rain Festival brings a rainstorm directly to performers and audience. Through snapping fingers, pizzicato, tambourine, conga drum, and rainstick, these special effects and fun percussion instruments simulate a downpour quickly sweeping through an African village. But once the storm subsides, get ready. It’s time to march to the party! The stomping of feet segues into the village festival celebrating rain and its importance to all living things on our beautiful planet.
Steps to Successful Rehearsals1. For the opening section featuring finger snapping (for rainfall effect), strive for random snapping that is not in
tempo or in sync with anyone else. When dividing the sections, one choice is to have the back stands snap and the front stands play the printed music. Another option is to have inside players from each stand snap and outside players from each stand play. The latter option offers a better mix and delivers a more realistic rain sound to the audience. If your orchestra is less experienced the first option may be the best choice so that less confident players are more successful.
2. Students must learn to count silently at the beginning so that the orchestra remains together. With whole notes and rests, it becomes easy for them to zone out and not count! During the rehearsal process, have all students play the whole notes by plucking as it forces them to count through the whole notes.
3. Regarding “Wood Blocks” percussion part for measures 1–24, the only instrument playing is either rainstick or wind chimes. If using wind chimes, assign it to the wood block player. If using a rainstick, have the bells player play it. If using multiple rainsticks, pass some out through the orchestra and instead of snapping, have them play rainsticks.
3.5. If you don’t have access to a rainstick or two, consider asking for some student volunteers to make some rainsticks. Visit one of the following websites for rainstick-making instructions:
www.exploratorium.edu/frogs/rain_stick/index.html
www.enchantedlearning.com/crafts/music/rainstick/
www.voices.yahoo.com/how-musical-rain-stick-craft-project-for-311638.html
3.75. The Bells part is optional. It can be played on keyboard, especially during rehearsals.
4. Measure 22 indicates an Accelerando poco a poco. This is a new term, not introduced in String Basics, Book 2. In this piece, the accelerando will happen fairly naturally and it’s recommended to just push it fast enough to be the new tempo at the Moderato (measure 25). Note the time signature change with students prior to their sight reading experience.
5. The piano dynamic at 43 adds a striking contrast to the song if the violins will play soft enough. After that have the cellos and bass come in really strong at 47 by adding lots of weight to the tip in their entrance.
6. Measure 59: Allegro initiates the rain festival party. The tempo indication offers a range q = 120–132. Choose a tempo that doesn’t compromise the rhythmic precision of your orchestra. Note the time signature change with students prior to their sight reading experience.
7. The wood block/temple block part has a rhythm beginning in measure 60 that has not been officially intro-duced in String Basics, Book 2. Write the (m. 60) beats 1 and 2 rhythm combination
.œ œ œ œon the
board for the entire class to learn and have them count aloud to ensure understanding and success.
8. Measure 78 offers the melody to the 2nd violin section. The 1st violins have a high descant, and as they play it, must be able to hear the melody. It’s easy for a higher pitched part to cover the melody, so spend time working on ensemble balance. And, it’s always good to encourage the 2nd violins to really play out and have their turn to shine!

9. The dotted and accented quarter notes such as those on beat 3 of measure 89 need to be short and the bow needs to come off the string like in measure 89. Have students “pop” the bow off the string with a strong accent.
10. For added fun and effect after the percussion solo at measure 97, have students add party shouts and noises as they stomp feet.
11. Measure 98 signals a key change to G Major from D Major. Be sure to highlight this new concept to students prior to their sight reading experience.
12. Measures 109, 111, and 113 are great places to practice the accent and dot “popping” the bow off the string since everyone in the orchestra has that marking on beat 3.
