2 ABOUT ME

new graduate from RPI. My background in I AM Aengineering and design has fostered a passion for developing meaningful products. To me, meaningful design is simply problem-solving--creating solutions to problems in the real world. We can achieve this by centering solutions around people and also leveraging the perspectives and skills of a diverse team. As I start my career out of school, I want to join companies who do just that.

4 PERSONAL SHAVE STAND

The main theme of this project was to make a shave stand that differentiates from what is normally found on the market today. Since shaving with double-edged (DE) or straight razors is a rather antiquated practice, the stands that accompany them typically share the same quality. Often, they are hand-crafted out of wood, or simply manufactured out of a few metal components. By foregoing the traditionally organic shapes and finishes in order to incorporate more geometric forms, I was able to create a razor stand that was unique and modern. Inspiration was taken from many other razor stands, but this design was completely produced by me.

6 DESIGNERS BLOCK

Existing mock-up methods are messy and wasteful, inhibiting the overall design process and hindering products’ potential progress. These mock-ups are important in pushing an idea forward, yet are often approached as something crude and primitive. Designers Block allows designers to rapidly mock-up and communicate ideas as they’re conceived. They are able to rapidly create, iterate, and scrap ideas with minimal waste and clean up. With its frosted finish and embedded neodym ium magnets, Designers Block creates a satisfying mock-up experience and pushes the design process forward.

My team approached this wanting to keep user experience a high priority. We created several prototypes to explore shapes and sizes that can be handled with bare hands, as well as different magnets and orientations to take advantage of the haptic feedback. We also considered many plastics, foams, and woods in order to create as positive and high quality of a mock-up experience as possible in terms of tactility and aesthetics. Designers Block simplifies the mock-up process by keeping it contained. Ideas can come in, change, and go while no time or effort is wasted in acquiring or disposing of materials.

8 AEGIS

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) has been plaguing athletes involved in sports prone to concussions, such as football. Aegis confronts this issue by distributing impact forces and prolonging the time of impact, which decreases the acceleration the brain sustains. Under this principle, Aegis lowers the risk of concussions during play and keeps players safer than current market leaders.

During the Aegis project, it was important for my team to emphasize prototyping and iterating in order to properly implement our design solution. We experimented with different types of helmet designs and took several product samples apart to understand how they were constructed. We were also able to allot some of our time in the project to conduct testing in order to compare our functional prototype to existing products.

10 MASONMATE

Masonmate is a screw-on handle for smaller mason jars with a lip diameter of 70mm. These prototypes were designed for 3D printing: mouth cutaways were built in to minimize contact with the plastic while drinking, features were oriented to minimize support material, and the handle was given a contoured grip at the just the right length--again, to optimize material use while making it comfortable to use. The final versions I gave to people were printed in Taulman T-glase, a material that was FDA approved for direct food contact.

I designed this after a school-wide event during which students were given these jars for free. Not quite a mug and not quite a jar, these lid-less, handle-less mason jars left students wanting. I took it upon myself to try and alleviate at least some of the disappointment and came up with this design. I went through about 10 iterations (4 of them pictures above, center), consistently getting feedback from others on both its form and function until arriving at the latest design, seen here.
