A simple letter to let them know

Valentines Day always makes me think back to a day in 8th grade when

there was a substitute teacher or maybe it was a guest speaker in Joy

Lessard’s newspaper class. I really don’t know if this actually happened

or if it is just something I have made up.

As I remember this speaker was a woman, like any other “mom” to me

at the time. I have no idea what the subject was or what I was suppose to

be learning but what has stuck with me, the 35 plus years since, was the

following comment.

She stated that every single Valentine’s Day she took the time to write

her daughter a letter to let her know she was thinking of her. Not a

“Valentine’s” but a letter.

That is it. Out of my entire 8th grade year that is what is in the foremost

in my mind. I know, pretty impressive….

While not as constant as this woman claimed to

be I have done the same. I write a simple letter to

let my daughter Jordan and son Gerik know that I

am so proud of the individuals they have become.

I would slip these in their lunches, yes like me,

they brought their lunches from home.

I should note that Jordan is now is in her Junior

year at WSU, so now I actually have to mail it to

her, and Gerik, 16, has profound autism, he does

not read that we know of, and communicates verbally with a few basic

words. I can only hope his school aids have taken those letters and read

them to him. This is what Valentines means to me. A simple gesture to

let those I love know how important they are to me.

In the end, aren’t they what we come to work for?

should be a day for romance. To read more on the history

The month of February should be a month of not only

romance but of a strong building in communication and

binding in relationships with your family, friends, and

coworkers. Many focus on just the romantic love of a man

and a woman. "The word February is believed to have derived from the

name 'Februa' taken from the Roman 'Festival of

Purification'. The root 'februo' meaning to 'I purify by

sacrifice'. As part of the seasonal calendar February is the

time of the 'Ice Moon' according to Pagan beliefs, and the

period described as the 'Moon of the Dark Red Calf' by Black

Elk. February has also been known as 'Sprout-kale' by the

Anglo-Saxons in relation to the time the kale and cabbage

was edible."

History of Valentines Day

The Month of February has been long

celebrated as a month of romance thanks

to the holiday Valentine day. I love

history so I will give some background

on this long celebrated holiday. Valentine

day has both Christian and ancient

Roman tradition involved.

The Catholic church recognizes at

least three different saints named

Valentine or Valentines, all of whom were martyred. One

legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served

during the third century in Rome. When Emperor

Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers

than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage

for young men. Valentine,

realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and

continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret.

When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius

ordered that he be put to death.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed

for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman

prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured.

According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine

actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he

fell in love with a young girl--possibly his jailor's

daughter--who visited him during his confinement. Before

his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed

"From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use

today.

While some believe that Valentine's Day is celebrated in

the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary

of Valentine's death or burial--which probably occurred

around A.D. 270--others claim that the Christian church

may have decided to place St. Valentine's feast day in the

middle of February in an effort to "Christianize" the pagan

celebration of Lupercalia.

Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15,

Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the

Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman

founders Romulus and Remus.

Lupercalia survived the initial rise of Christianity and but

was outlawed—as it was deemed “un-Christian”--at the

end of the 5th century, when Pope Gelasius declared

February 14 St. Valentine's Day.

It was not until much later, however, that the day became

definitively associated with love. During the Middle Ages,

it was commonly believed in France and England that

February 14 was the beginning of birds' mating season,

which added to the idea that the middle of Valentine's Day

Craft of the month

"Doilies are for grannies!" my

husband told me recently.

So, here's proof that they aren't.

Make this cute canvas wall art, or take

your leftover Xmas tins and make

them into pretty containers for pens,

jewelry, or even candy.

Just get some paper doilies, paint, and Mod Podge to

make this hip (and we're not talking replacement) craft.

small-town folk. So doesn’t it make sense to improve the

level of trust in our business relationships so that we can

have better business friendships and business

transactions? Of course! Who in their right mind would

give their money to someone they don’t trust? Look how

many choices our clients have today – An honest, trusting

relationship is the key to keeping your clients happy and

coming back for more. Give them value and help them

succeed.

“When trust begins to evaporate, the partnership

becomes strained. And, depending on the violation, it

may never get back to the same place that it once was.

That’s how powerful trust is.”

- Jeffrey Gitomer

Don’t take a chance on weakening the bond of trust with

your clients. They will buy from someone else. Brush

up on your skills – we can all learn no matter how great

we think we are!

“Trust forms the foundation for everything you do in

your business, and everything you do in your personal

life.”

- Jeffrey Gitomer

Most of you have probably noticed that when I visit you I

always ask what I can help you work on such as product

research or cleaning and re-organizing your supply closet.

I’ve found that the real pleasure of life is in helping

people, not just selling things.

Helping you research and find

the perfect product or making it

easier for you to find supplies in

your cabinet or organizing your

favorites list is what truly makes

me happy because I know that

by helping you obtain your

supplies faster and more

efficiently, you have more time

to focus on money making tasks

for your business. In the process

you have opened up to me and

trust has grown and friendships

have been made.

There’s no better reward than to be trusted enough to

kindle a friendship!

Thank you Jerrols clients who have given back so much

to me – you are all the greatest!!

Cheers! - Sarah Peters Sarah can be reached at [email protected] or (509) 899-4004

TRUST ME! Believe it or not, using that phrase is

actually a bad idea. If you have to say

“trust me” you haven’t earned it yet and

you are forced to ask for it.

The month of Love is here! We all

have various types of relationships in

both our personal and business lives.

With family members, spouses, and friends, co-workers,

managers, and clients, these relationships are all at

different levels or stages of trust. Are any of your

relationships strained? Fulfilling and wonderful?

Somewhere in-between? Better relationships lead to

living happier more fulfilling and rewarding lives.

Would you like to reap the benefits of improving your

relationships? Look deep within TRUST to improve your

relationships.

Why should I trust you?

This February article touches briefly on how the quality

level of our relationships is in direct proportion to the

amount of trust that exists in them. TRUST is the key to

improving all relationships – period. The answer to the

question above is straight forward Trust will allow two

people to reach any level in a relationship. The greater

the trust factor, the more expansive the relationship can

become and all the more rewarding!

One of my favorite books on Trust is by Jeffrey Gitomer

called The Little Teal Book of Trust. How to Earn it,

Grow it, and Keep it to Become a TRUSTED ADVISOR

in Sales, Business, & Life. (I LOVE THIS BOOK).

Mr Gitomer’s little book is jam packed full of great

quotes and anecdotes. For example, “All things being

equal, people want to buy from their friends. All things

being not so equal, people still want to buy from their

friends.” We all know this is true, especially us
