2015 has been a big year for Jersey Opera House from every point of view. We have celebrated 150 years of a theatre in Gloucester Street with various events throughout the year and a very special gala night on the 21st of November with almost 100 local artists on stage.

After a huge 2015 we didn’t want 2016 to be less exciting, so we have lined up an array of shows for the months ahead.

What better way to start the year than with the first visit of the Saint Petersburg Classic Ballet presenting their production of Swan Lake and The Nutcracker with a full live orchestra, followed by a night with mountaineer and storyteller Andy Kirkpatrick and a spectacular Rock ‘n Roll tribute with Hats off to Led Zeppelin.

Other highlights include the return of Dinosaur Zoo with a brand new show, comedians Ed Byrne and Jimeoin are bringing their hilarious shows to the island and Circus of Horrors is celebrating 21 years of the wildest show on earth! If you are a TED follower, don’t miss the screening of the opening night of this worldwide phenomenon live from Vancouver.

As we are constantly updating our event calendar keep up-to-date with the latest listings by checking our website, Facebook and Twitter or why not follow us on our new Instagram account for the best behind the scenes photos?

We hope you will find something to like and we look forward to welcoming you to the Opera House in 2016.

Bizet’s gorgeous opera of lust and longing set in the Far East returns to the Met stage for the first time in 100 years.

Soprano Diana Damrau stars as Leïla, the beautiful Hindu priestess pursued by rival pearl divers competing for her hand. Her suitors are tenor Matthew Polenzani and baritone Mariusz Kwiecien, who sing the lilting duet Au fond du temple saint, which opera fans know and adore.

Director Penny Woolcock explores the timeless themes of pure love, betrayal, and vengeance in a production that vividly creates an undersea world on stage.

Conductor Gianandrea Noseda brings his romantic flair to the lush score from the composer of Carmen.

NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE:

LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSESLIVE SCREENING

Following the hugely successful broadcasts of Coriolanus and King Lear, National Theatre Live brings the Donmar Warehouse’s highly anticipated new production of Les Liaisons Dangereuses to cinemas – broadcast live from the Donmar’s London home.

Directed by Josie Rourke (Coriolanus), the cast includes Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), Janet McTeer (The White Queen) and Dominic West (The Wire).

In 1782, Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France scandalised the world. Two hundred years later, Christopher Hampton’s irresistible adaptation swept the board, winning the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play. Josie Rourke’s revival now marks the play’s thirty year anniversary.

Former lovers, the Marquise de Merteuil and Vicomte de Valmont now compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cecile de Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.

The Met stage ignites when soprano Kristine Opolais and tenor Jonas Kaufmann join forces in Puccini’s obsessive love story.

Opolais sings the title role of the country girl who transforms herself into a Parisian temptress, while Kaufmann is the dashing student who desperately woos her.

Director Richard Eyre places the action in occupied France in a film noir setting. “Desperate passion” is the phrase Puccini himself used to describe the opera that confirmed his position as the preeminent Italian opera composer of his day.

Met Principal Conductor Fabio Luisi leads the stirring score.

Anthony Minghella’s breathtaking production has thrilled audiences ever since its premiere in 2006. Kristine Opolais reprises her acclaimed portrayal of the title role, opposite Roberto Alagna as Pinkerton, the naval officer who breaks Butterfly’s heart.

Karel Mark Chichon conducts.

The title character of Madama Butterfly – a young Japanese geisha who clings to the belief that her arrangement with a visiting American naval officer is a loving and permanent marriage – is one of the defining roles in opera. The story triggers ideas about cultural and sexual imperialism for people far removed from the opera house and

film. Broadway, and popular culture in general have riffed endlessly on it. The lyric beauty of Puccini’s score, especially the music for the thoroughly believable lead role, has made Butterfly timeless.

ROBERTO DEVEREUXENCORE SCREENING

Sondra Radvanovsky finishes her extraordinary challenge of singing Donizetti’s three Tudor queens in one season.

Here she plays Queen Elizabeth I, forced to sign the death warrant of the man she loves, Roberto Devereux, sung by Matthew Polenzani. Elna Garanˇca and Mariusz Kwiecien complete the principal quartet, and Maurizio Benini conducts. As with Anna Bolena and Maria Stuarda, the production is by Sir David McVicar.

England, 1599. Robert Devereux, Earl of Essex and favourite of Queen Elizabeth I, is sent to Ireland to defeat the rebellious Irish chieftains. After an unsuccessful campaign he returns

to England, where his actions are deemed a desertion of duty. The opera is inspired by the events of the following two years, which are condensed into a few days

THE CIRCUS OF HORRORS 21ST ANNIVERSARY TOUR – WELCOME TO THE CARNEVIL

The show that stormed into the finals of Britain's Got Talent & now a West End smash is back to mark its 21st Anniversary in spectacular style.

The latest incarnation ‘Welcome to the Carnevil’ is set in Victorian London in 1899, Jack the Ripper was still at large & this was the age of the Freakshow, a young girl dreamt of running away to join the Circus only to see her dream become a nightmare in a decrepit & corpse ridden Carnevil.

The story twists and turns with grisly murders and sensational shock’s – all interwoven with some of the greatest and most bizarre circus acts on earth, performed by an almighty cast with a forked tongue firmly in each cheek and

the devil driven rock n’ roll of Dr Haze & The Interceptors from Hell.

The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met.

However his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon.

Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and

bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings.

Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth.

PLAYS ROUGHIN THE STUDIO

A hothouse for emerging creative talent, a typical Plays Rough evening mixes a handful of brand new short plays together with original music and poetry.

As one of the island’s forums for developing new work, the atmosphere is fun and informal, crackling with creativity. What it lacks in elaborate set and overall polish, it more than makes

up for in raw talent. Plays debuted at Plays Rough have gone on to London theatres and UK festivals.

Plus the tickets are cheap!
