SCCA Regional Races and TeamDI Pro-IT Rounds 8 and 9

The event was held at the 1.90 Mile Lightning course of the New Jersey Motorsports Park in Millville, NJ on Oct. 16-17-18, 2009. The Regional Races consisted of nine (9) race groups. The sanction number for the Regional Race is 09-R-838-P. The two rounds of the Driving Impressions TeamDI Pro-IT consisted of one (1) race group which ran two rounds in the TeamDI Pro-IT Championship. A typo in the sanction numbers for these two events showed the last character as an “S” instead of a “P”. For that reason, these reports have been reprinted with the correct sanction number and override any hard copy reports produced at the track. Two qualifying sessions for each race group in the Regional races were held Friday. These two qualifying runs were merged using the Orbits Merge feature to set the grid for Race 1. The grid for Race 2 was determined by the finishing order of Race 1. The grid for Race 3 was determined by the finishing order of Race 2. Races were run on Saturday and Sunday. After being notified by the Chief Steward that Group 6 was being combined with group 7, the next run (Race 1) for Group 6 was started by mistake. The hot computer operator was not able to stop the run and start Race 1 for Group 7 before the green flag start of the run. Therefore, Group 6 was renamed to Group 6/7 for the remainder of the event.

Driving Impressions TeamDI Round 8 and Round 9 The Pro-IT consisted of one (1) race group. The sanction number for the Pro-IT Races is 09-R-839-P. One qualifying session for the race group in the Pro-IT races was held Saturday morning. This produced a grid for Round 8. The fast lap in Round 8 set the grid for Round 9. Races were run on Saturday and Sunday

Both Events

The weather was Cold and wet (very slippy in spots) on Friday. Horrendously cold, windy and wet on Saturday. Miserably colder, windy and wet on Sunday. The Chief Steward and Race Chairs worked together to distribute hot chocolate and bring the corner workers and grid/pit workers out of the elements every few hours. Combining small race groups and shortening the length of Race 3 in the regional was done to provide good competition for the competitors without abusing the workers. On Friday, An RFA was issued to move Group 1 and merge them into Group 3. Later, cars in SSM (Group 3) were moved to Group 5. Race lengths were increased from 12-16-16 laps to 14-18-18 laps for the three races in the regional. On Saturday, Group 6 was merged into group 7 and driver Holmes was changed to car #11. For Race 3 (the actual race) all sessions were shortened to 12 laps due to inclement weather and early darkness on course.

Friday morning the pit loop did not function. Investigation by NJMP Maintenance and Bart Carlevaro, NNJR found that the cable had been cut. They worked during the lunch break to splice the cable back together and the pit loop functioned for the rest of the event. Due to the overcast skies and early sunset this late in the season, tapers had great difficulty reading car numbers; particularly late in the afternoons. The entry for this event was disappointingly low. Contributing to the low turnout were scheduling issues compounded by the bad weather and cold forecast for the weekend. The races ran close to schedule with the exceptions noted above. The nine (9) Regional races were 162 laps which was a modification of the published supps. race groups with only one car running were checkered early if the competitor completed more than half of the scheduled laps. Timing and Scoring ran a crew of 6 on Friday, 5 on Saturday, and 5 on Sunday. Special recognition should go to Bart Carlevaro NNJR, T&S Equipment Chief, Jack Oliver, SJR, Distribution Chief, and Judy Bloeser, Tri-R, who charted most of the race runs.
