Jesus: the baptizer(G.I.F.T.)

11 days to go before Christmas. Are you done with your Christmas shopping?During Christmas season, we remember the greatest gift God has given to mankind: Jesus Christ, His Only Begotten Son (John 3:16). But Jesus is not the only gift we received from God. God loves to give gifts. He is a God that just keeps on giving. When asked to think of the gifts God gave us, we automatically think: Jesus, salvation, healing, eternal life. But there is one gift that Jesus kept on talking about while he was still here on earth. Today we will talk about this gift that all of us should desire to have.1

Acts 1:4-54On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

Acts 1:4-55For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

I. Why You and I Need the baptism in the holy spirit GIFT

It is a gift promised by the Father, sent by Jesus. The Father gives it to us, Jesus executes for us.

5

Acts 1:4-5wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about...

in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

Luke 11:13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!James 1:17Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

If God wants to give me something, I certainly wouldnt refuse it. Hes the giver of all good gifts. He gives the best gifts to us. If Jesus kept on talking about the Holy Spirit during his final moments with his disciples, then it must be good. I gotta have it!8IMPORTANT

Jesus emphasized the need for it by commanding His disciples to wait for it.All the Gospel writers mentioned Jesus work of baptizing in the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:11, Mk 1:8, Lk 3:16, Jn 1:33)9

Acts 1:4-54On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.

Luke 24:49I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.

FLSB Article: Baptism in the Holy Spirit:

#2 - One of Christs key goals in his earthly mission was to baptize his followers in the Holy Spirit (Mt 3:11, Mk 1:8, Lk 3:16, Jn 1:33). He instructed his disciples not to begin witnessing until they were baptized in the Holy Spirit and clothed with power from on high (Lk 24:49, Ac 1:4-5,8). Jesus Christ himself did not enter his ministry until he had been anointed with the Holy Spirit and power (Ac 10:38, cf. Lk 4:1,18).11FULL MEASURE

12

Luke 4:1, 14, 18Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness

14Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit,

18 The Spirit of the Lord is on meJesus Himself was filled with the Spirit while He was here on earth. He operated his earthly missions under the leading, power, and anointing of the Holy Spirit. So should we. We should desire and ask to be filled to the full measure of the Spirit.

13Luke 11:13If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!

Dakes Annotated Reference Bible (Notes on Lk 11:13)All children of God are given the Spirit in a measure at new birth so what is this extra asking for the Holy Spirit after men become children of God if it is not what the disciples received at Pentecost after they had been children of God for several years (Ac 1:4-8, 2:1-16)? What was it that the others received after their sonship (Ac 9:17, 8:1-22, 10:44-48, 11:!4-18, 15:7-11, 19:1-7, etc.)14To paint a picture analogy of what is happening spiritually, when we receive the Holy Spirit like the disciples did on Resurrection Sunday it is like we are given a BRAND NEW CAR.Lets imagine the car is red to remind usthat we are covered and washedin the blood of Jesus. This brand new red car symbolizes the new CAPACITY we have in Christ. It is like the new wine skin, the new container for the new wine to be poured into

2 Corinthians 5:17, Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

John 3:5-8).5Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not marvel that I said to you, You must be born ...15We are given an INSURANCE POLICY that guarantees and covers us so we are protected while we drive our new car this is the MARKING and the SEAL of the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14, 13In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22).21And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, 22and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.16We are given our DRIVERS LICENSE with the approval and authority to drive the car In John 20:21-23 after Jesus breathed on the disciples to receive the Holy Spirit he immediately went on to say that if they forgave anyone their sins that person would be forgiven Jesus was giving them (and us) AUTHORITY. This drivers license also acts as IDENTIFICATION (John 1:12-13). We are now identified as children of God and we can now enter and experience the Kingdom of God here on earth the very real, palpable, ever- increasing, forcibly-advancing royal Kingdom of God.

John 20:21-2321Jesus said to them again, Peace be with you. As jthe Father has sent me, keven so I am sending you. 22And when he had said this, he lbreathed on them and said to them, mReceive the Holy Spirit. 23nIf you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.

John 1:1212But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.17If we poke about in the glove compartment of our new car we will find a WILL that bequeathed the car to us. To receive an INHERITANCE someone has to die. Jesus died and when we believed we inherited salvation (Hebrews 9:13). The Holy Spirit is the deposit guaranteeing our inheritance of eternal life; He is the seal of our salvation.the ever present confirmation and comfort that we belong to God and no one else.

Ephesians 1:13-1413And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are Gods possessionto the praise of his glory.

Hebrews 9:11-17

11But when Christ came as high priest of the good things that are now already here,[a] he went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not made with human hands, that is to say, is not a part of this creation. 12He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, thus obtaining[b] eternal redemption. 13The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. 14How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death,[c] so that we may serve the living God!15For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritancenow that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.

18What a truly awe-some gift the first receiving of the Holy Spirit is. When we fall in love with Jesus for the first time, He will blow on us to receive Gods first gifting of the Holy Spirit. If that we not enough, there is more.another gift to receive: the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. In keeping with thenew car analogy, having only the Resurrection Sunday receiving of theHolySpirit and never asking for more is like having a new car, but never filling the gas tank withfuel. What is the point of having a car and never driving it?Without the Baptism of theHoly Spirit (the second gift of the Holy Spirit that God gives us) we are withoutpower that is where the Pentecost Sunday receiving of the Holy Spirit comes in.

The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is like the FUEL for the gas tank in our car, with it we are CLOTHED WITH POWER from on high andare start driving the car on the road marked clearly for us.19The immersion, infilling and overflowing from the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is the ENABLING of a GPS NAVIGATION SYSTEM, where the Holy Spirit is our GUIDE who will help direct us what to do, and where to go

John 16:13).13When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.20With new cars, there are often upgrade features that are optional. With the Baptism of the Holy Spirit our UPGRADE FEATURES are ACTIVATED which are the 9 FRUITS of the Holy Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Consider our hearts choice to have more of the Holy Spirit being rewarded with a fruit basket left for us on the passenger seat to nourish us and others along the road we are travelling. All of these 9 fruits are enhanced and developed in us as we allow the Holy Spirit to work on our hearts so that we live a fruit-bearing life that blesses others.

Galatians 5:22-2322But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.21If we open the trunk, we will find a ROAD HAZARD KIT (filled with jumper cables, first aid kit, flash light, screw driver, reflective yield triangle, matches, tow rope, fire extinguisher and blanket) these are the 9 GIFTS of the Holy Spirit (Word of Wisdom, Word of Knowledge, Faith, Gifts of Healing, Working of Miracles, Prophecy, Discerning of Spirits, Different kinds of Tongues, Interpretation of Tongues ( 1 Corinthians 12:7-11) of which any combination of one or more will be given to us as tools to edify, encourage and help the Body of Christ on the road to eternity. These gifts will not occur all at once, but will develop over time as we mature in the Lord.22Lastly, with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit the ON STAR ASSISTANCE button is turned on and we have the ability to discernment the voice of the Holy Spirit and experience His personal assistance as our COUNCILLOR, CONVICTOR, TEACHER and INTERCESSOR

John 14:26 26But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

Isaiah 11:2 2 And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 2:13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.23TRIUMPHANT LIVING

It is our source of power for Christ-like living here on earth.24Acts 1:8But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

Pentecostal Spirituality Notes:The goal of Christian spirituality is to be like Christ. Jesus modeled how it is to live here on earth. He is the Real Man.

Full Life Study Bible (Article: Baptism in the Holy Spirit)#6 The baptism in the Holy Spirit will bring the personal boldness and power of the Spirit into the believers life in order to accomplish mighty works in Christs name and to make his or her witness and proclamation effective (cf. Ac 1:8, 2:14-41, 4:31, 6:8, Rom 15:18-19, 1 Co 2:4). This power is not some impersonal force, but is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit by which Jesus and his glory and works are present with his people (Jn 14:16-18, 16:14, 1 Co 12:7).Pentecostal Evangel (Article: Counting on the Supernatural by Randy Hurst)Most of the time, the kind of power we need in everyday life is neither spectacular nor sensational. But it is supernatural. Accomplishing Gods purposes in this world requires divine help beyond our natural abilities. Supernatural living is not always outwardly dramatic.25

III. AFTER I RECEIVE THE GIFT, WHATS NEXT?Ephesians 5:18FLSB NOTES (Eph 5:18)Present passive imperative tense repeatedly being filledChristians are to be baptized in the Holy Spirit after conversion (Ac 1:5, 2:4), yet they are to be filled with the Spirit repeatedly for worship, service and witness (See Ac 4:31-33 note).Acts 4:31 (FLSB Note #3) All believers, including the apostles who had been previously filled (2:3) are freshly filled to meet the continuing opposition of the Jews (v.29). Fresh fillings with the Holy Spirit are part of Gods will and provision for all who have received the baptism in the Holy Spirit. We should expect and seek those fillings.Believers experience repeated fillings with the Spirit by Maintaining a living faith in Jesus Christ (Gal 3:5)Being filled with Gods Word (Col 3:16)Praying, giving thanks and singing to the Lord (Eph 5:19-20, 1 Co 14:15)Serving others (Eph 5:21)Doing what the Holy Spirit desires (Eph 4:30, Rom 8:1-14, Gal 5:16ff, 1 Th 5:19).
