DRAWN INTO THE STORY

“W e are witnesses!” The scripture readings for Easter Sun-day concentrate on details reported by eyewitnesses. Listen carefully and you will

be drawn into the stories yourself. Peter reports the good works Jesus did, his death on the cross, and his resurrec-tion. The passage from John’s Gospel has us running to the empty tomb with Peter and John and peering inside to see the cloths used to cover Jesus’ body. Psalm 118 sums up our response: “It is won-derful in our eyes!” What resurrection details do we see in our lives today? How have we died to our old lives and been raised up again with Jesus? Let us pay attention to the new life around us. It is wonder-ful in our eyes. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS

F ifty years or so ago, it was popular to teach that every Sunday is a “Little Easter.” Today, after several decades of intense liturgical reform, it is more proper to think

of today as a “Big Sunday.” On every Sunday of the year, the Church is obliged to assemble, keeping the day holy. In most places, we hardly attain the goal of gather-ing all who are in Christ by baptism. Look around today and see what a Big Sunday looks like! Our tradition speaks of remem-bering, anamnesis, as the antidote to “amnesia,” the tragic forgetting of who God is and who we are as God’s most beloved creation. On this Easter day, we are at our very best. We remember who God is, and we remember who we are in God’s eyes: beloved sons and daughters, reborn to eternal life in baptismal waters. We rekindle our candles and reclaim our baptismal promises. As a “Big Sunday,” today also reflects the character of festivity and leisure that should mark eve-ry Lord’s Day. We wear “Sunday best” today, and we may take some time, especially in the northern states, to stroll through a budding gar-den. It is truly a “Big Sunday,” and how different our lives would be if we took its values and traditions forward into all the Sundays of our lives.——Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

EASTER REFLECTION

O n Easter Sunday, the Church is recollected in contemplation of the risen Christ. Thus she relives the primordial experience that lies at the basis of her exist-

ence. She feels imbued with the same wonder as Mary Magdalen and the other women who went to Christ's tomb on Easter morning and found it empty. That tomb became the womb of life. Whoever had condemned Jesus, deceived himself that he

had buried his cause under an ice-cold tombstone. The disciples themselves gave into the feeling of ir-reparable failure. We understand their surprise, then, and even their distrust in the news of the empty tomb. But the Risen One did not delay in making him-self seen and they yielded to reality. They saw and believed! Two thousand years later, we still sense the unspeakable emotion that overcame them when they heard the Master's greeting: "Peace be with you.'".... ...Christ's Resurrection is the strength, the secret of Christianity. It is not a question of mythology or of mere symbolism, but of a concrete event. It is con-firmed by sure and convincing proofs. The ac-ceptance of this truth, although the fruit of the Holy Spirit's grace, rests at the same time on a solid histor-ical base. On the threshold of the third millennium, the new effort of evangelization can begin only from a renewed experience of this Mystery, accepted in faith and witnessed to in life.... Pope John Paul II, EWTN

CAPTURADO POR LA HISTORIA

“¡S omos testigos!”
