Volume 20 SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY April 19, 2020

D ivine Mercy Sunday is the Sunday after Easter, as declared by Pope St. John Paul II in 2000. We know Our Lord’s mercy is mentioned in Holy Scripture. Do we really focus on it? Jesus wants us to be aware of His unfathomable Mercy. On Divine Mercy Sunday in 2005, part of Pope St. John Paul II’s message was “…the Risen Lord offers His love that pardons, reconciles and reopens hearts to love. It is a love that converts hearts and gives peace. How much the world needs to understand and accept Divine Mercy!” History: In the 1930s, our civilization was beginning a downward spiral into Nazism and Communism, forgetting the inherent sanctity and dignity of human life. Our Lord Jesus appeared to a humble, uneducated nun, Sister Faustina Kolwalska in Poland. . “…I desire that the whole world know My infinite Mercy.” (Diary, 687) Pope St. John Paul II offers an extended meditation on the mystery of God’s mercy, which he calls the greatest of the attributes and perfections of God. (Rich In Mercy, 13) The Image: Jesus urged St. Faustina to spread devotion to His Divine Mercy. He gave her a vision of Himself with His right hand raised in blessing and His left hand touching his cloak above His heart, revealing two rays symbolizing blood and water, which He shed for love of us. He told St. Faustina to put the inscription, Jesus I trust in You, under His image. Jesus told her the soul who looks with reverence on this image will not perish. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy: St. Faustina was told to ask souls to pray the Chaplet. “Encourage souls to say the chaplet which I have given you”. (St. Faustina’s Diary, 154) She recounts Jesus’ promise, that the person will receive great mercy at the hour of death, even if a hardened sinner. The Hour of Mercy is prayed at 3:00 PM, a special time to recite the Chaplet, which is prayed on a rosary. Relevant Radio prays it at 3PM CST. EWTN prays it at 2PM CST, originating from The Divine Mercy National Shrine, Stockbridge, MA. The Divine Mercy Novena: Jesus gave St. Faustina special intentions for which to pray. The nine intentions are All Mankind; Priests and Religious; Faithful Souls; Those who do not accept Me or Know Me; Those who have separated themselves from the Church; Humble Souls and Children; Those who venerate and glorify my Mercy; Souls in Purgatory; and, Lukewarm Souls. If you begin on Good Friday, you will end the novena on the Saturday before Divine Mercy Sunday. The Novena is promised to be powerful, and, is a prayer that can be prayed over and over. Indulgences: In 2002 Divine Mercy Sunday was given Plenary Indulgence status, granted under the usual conditions. These conditions are: sacramental confession in the week before or the week after; Eucharistic communion and prayers for the intentions of the Pope; and, taking part in the devotion held in honor of Divine Mercy. A partial indulgence is granted to the faithful who, at least with a contrite heart, pray to the Merciful Lord Jesus with approved prayers: such as Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You!. Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime... A quick internet search of the phrase "Everybody Needs Somebody Sometime" produces the lyrics of several songs that were popular in their time period. Though the words may have a special meaning in each of the songs, the sentiment is universal. We are not alone in the world, and sometimes each of us needs a little help in our own lives.

The people of Mary, Mother of Divine Grace Parish are served by a group of St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers working out of both worship sites. The Divine Infant SVDP Group can provide help to those needing emergency, temporary, or ongoing assistance in the form of food or other aid.

If you need help, or know someone who needs help, please call the Divine Infant rectory at 708-865-8071 and someone from our St. Vincent Group will contact you. All information is strictly confidential.

GET REAL! Those of us who flatter ourselves that we have a “realistic” view of the world may listen to the first reading today and say, “Get real!” when we hear Luke’s account of the early, Elysian days of the Christian movement. All seems to be rosy, lots of wonders are performed, everyone shares selflessly, they eat together in “exultation,” and the Lord added to their numbers? Well, who wouldn’t be attracted to a group like this? From the wind that swept through the upper room at Pentecost as the Spirit of God blew over the face of the waters in Genesis, and the fire that appeared over each disciple as the light appeared at the dawn of creation, Luke’s intent in Acts is to show a new creation, a restoration of creation’s original goodness through the working of the Holy Spirit. It is the Spirit who continues to make us into the Body of Christ. We may occasionally, like Thomas in the Gospel, say, “Get real!” but our ultimate reality in the Spirit is to work continually to make our Christian community a new creation, one in which others will find God’s joy and beauty. April DISTANCE brings

May EXISTENCE

MONDAY MEDITATION: JOHN 3:1-8 How can a man once grown old be born again? (John 3:4)

Poor Nicodemus! He really wanted to understand Jesus. Jesusʼ words and actions had attracted Nicodemusʼ attention and, quite possibly, his admiration. So he visited this mysterious rabbi from Nazareth. Finding him, Nicodemus began his conversation by listing some of the impressive things said about Jesus: “a teacher who has come from God” and someone whom “God is with” in a unique way (John 3:2).

But Nicodemus didnʼt get very far before Jesus interrupted him: “Unless one is born from above,” he said, “he cannot see the Kingdom of God” (John 3:3). You donʼt get it yet. Without a new birth, both I and the kingdom I am preaching will remain a mystery to you. There really is something mysterious about the Christian life. Think of how puzzling the saints can seem to us. How could St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta keep smiling in the midst of all the suffering she encountered in the poorest of the poor? Or what about St. Maximilian Kolbe, a prisoner in Auschwitz who volunteered to take the place of a fellow prisoner who was condemned to die by starvation? While he wasted away, he peacefully led his fellow prisoners in prayer. “Who does that?” some might wonder.

Believers do, thatʼs who.

You are a mystery as well. When you were baptized, you were born from above and filled with the Holy Spirit. The same Spirit that empowered Mother Teresa and Maximilian Kolbe lives in you. He is that mysterious presence who moves you to acts of generosity and kindness when you could just as easily walk away. He is the One who helps you forgive a long-standing hurt even though the wound still stings. And he is the One who can give you courage to share your faith with a neighbor despite an inner reluctance.

Every time you follow these promptings, you become a little more mysterious to the people around you—and a little more attractive. Thatʼs because with each act of kindness or faithfulness, you become more like Jesus, the most mysterious and attractive person who ever lived.

“Thank you, Holy Spirit, for coming to live in my heart.”

RENEWAL OF

BAPTISMAL PROMISES

Dear brothers and sisters, through the paschal mystery we have been buried with Christ in baptism, so that we may walk with him in newness of life. And so, now that our Lenten observance is concluded, let us renew the promises of Holy Baptism, by which we once renounced Satan and his works and promised to serve God in the holy Catholic Church. And so, I ask you:

Do you renounce sin, so as to live in the freedom of the children of God? I do. Do you reject the lure of evil, so that sin may have no mastery over you? I do. Do you reject Satan, the author and prince of sin? I do. Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth? I do. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death and was buried, rose again from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the Father? I do.

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? I do.

And may almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has given us new birth by water and the Holy Spirit, and bestowed on us forgiveness of our sins, keep us by his grace, in Christ Jesus our Lord, for eternal life. Amen.

Text of the Renewal of Baptismal Promises from the New Roman Missal, 3rd Edition.

SAINT MARK THE EVANGELIST April 25

The symbol for Mark is a lion with wings. That is because his Gospel begins with the story of John the Baptist, a “voice crying in the wilderness” (Mark 1:3), like the roaring of a lion. Lions are called the kings of the jungle. Mark’s Gospel tells us about Jesus’ royalty as God’s Son, a kingship we share through our Baptism.

We celebrate Saint Mark’s feast day on April 25. His life and Gospel remind us to share the Good News about Jesus with others. He is the patron saint of many different topics, including lions, lawyers, notaries, opticians, pharmacists, painters, secretaries, interpreters, prisoners, and people dealing with insect bites.

April 19 *SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY*

Poor Thomas. He misses one gathering and it turns out to be the one at which Jesus makes his first post-Resurrection appearance. When he returns, they tell him they have seen the Lord. Incredulous Thomas. Thus must be some crazy collective delusion. He refuses to believe Jesus is risen. Doubting Thomas. Not just a week later, but thanks to this passage from John, for all time. But doubt is just the first stop on the road to faith. All the disciples doubted at first. None of them believed until they saw him, not at the tomb, not on the road, not in the locked room. They first had to be willing to accept what they could not prove, what was still unknown. The apostles in Acts could not have known when they sold their property and possessions that it would all work out. But they were willing to believe that it would. Those who read the first letter of Peter could not know that suffering through various trials would eventually result in rejoicing with an indescribable and glorious joy. So in the end: Blessed Thomas. He has modeled for us the first step to faith.

How do you overcome doubt and believe what you cannot see or prove? FIRST READING A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles Acts 2:42-47

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: Psalm 118:2-4,13-15,22-24 (R/.1)

R/. Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is ever lasting.

Let the house of Israel say, / “His mercy endures forever.” Let the house of Aaron say, / “His mercy endures forever.” Let those who fear the Lord say, / “His mercy endures forever.” R/. I was hard pressed and was falling, / but the Lord helped me. My strength and my courage is the Lord, / and he has been my savior. The joyful shout of victory / in the tents of the just: R/.

The stone which the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. By the Lord has this been done; it is wonderful in our eyes. This is the day the Lord has made; / let us be glad and rejoice in it. R/. SECOND READING
