I hope and pray that as the Spirit works on me as each year passes, He does the same for you. I pray that our preparation is not done out of drudgery but rather out of a longing as one packs for a trip to see someone they haven’t seen in a long long time. The anticipation builds and builds. Imagine seeing Jesus. Finally. Imagine being in His presence because faith in Him brought us there. The question and the problem for us comes in not knowing when. So let’s not get hung up on that but rather focus on being God’s children and showing His love. It easy to fall in line with the world as Christ referenced the lives of the people at the time of Noah. It’s hard to follow Christ as Christians. The text from Matthew has to do with Christ’s 2nd coming but we use that text in this Advent season be-cause we are getting ready for Christmas when Christ comes as God in the flesh of Baby Jesus. I used to get frustrated as a Pastor because we end the church year in November with the theme of Christ’s 2nd com-ing. “COME, LORD JESUS” by Dr. W. MART THOMPSON

“Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest . . .” so

begins the common table prayer. In the spirit of

Revelation 22:20, during Advent services we

will apply this petition to Advent devotions.

Through short and simple daily practices we will

learn to pray, “Come Lord Jesus” in a way

that gives daily strength and hope.

“Daily devotions.” That sounds like a huge

challenge to many of us. Whether you are a

household of one, two, three, or more, having

daily devotions can be a struggle.

Our Advent series will use God’s word to equip

disciples for this struggle and provide simple

and effective ways to help meet this challenge.

With God’s help we can learn to daily pray,

“Come, Lord Jesus,” not only to daily bless our

food but our lives, finding strength and hope

in Jesus. The hope and strength that Jesus gives

comes in his victory over the “unholy trinity”: the devil, our sinful nature, and the sinful world. This includes

the promise of fully flourishing in the life to come. In this series we will explore how God’s word teaches and

guides us in following our victorious Lord as we look to him in daily devotion to his word.

“Advent” means “coming.” During this season of Advent our focus will be on Jesus’s “three comings” to save

us—past, present, and future. Jesus has come and accomplished his saving work. He continues to come by the

power of the Holy Spirit through the word and sacraments. He will come again on the last day for our final

deliverance.

This series will match Christ’s three “comings” with his “overcoming” of the “unholy trinity,” the enemies of

his saving word.

Why do the just suffer? Where is God in the midst of loss, illness, ridicule and defeat? Those questions probe deeply into the heart of every person, and all too often demand ready an-swers in our uniquely human, and sometimes painful, experience.

Job’s true story of God’s grace in the midst of his profound suffering will teach you:

the purpose of adversity in the lives of the faithful;

the role of Satan regarding our relationship with God;

the hope and strength we have through the promise of our Redeemer.

Joseph—Carpenter of Steel The six session study about Joseph, the foster-father of Jesus, speaks of Joseph’s struggle over what to do when he discovers Mary is pregnant with a child he knows isn’t his. It tells the Christmas story of Joseph search-ing for a suitable place for Jesus’ birth. It speaks of the coming of the wise men and Joseph stepping up to save Jesus from King Herod. And, it deals with Joseph’s frantic search for the lost 12-year-old Jesus, as well as the legacy he left his family. Join us!! Class leader, Pastor Dan Hinrichs.

St. Paul Lutheran Church is delighted to share the news that they continue to update its parish cemetery in Sevens Point.

Past burials at the cemetery have generally been restricted to congregational members, but with the new cemetery expansion, we now make us-age of our cemetery available to members of all local Lutheran congregations.

Lot costs are competitive with those of other nearby cemeteries. We are hoping to move ahead with the installation of a columbarium for those who prefer respectful above ground stor-age of their cremains.

Informational brochures are in the church narthex near the front entryway.

NEW FRIDAY STUDY

JANUARY 24th

THE MORMONS, WHO THEY ARE, WHAT THEY

BELIEVE will be the new study for Friday morning,

starting January 24th. The class will be led by Pastor

Dan Hinrichs from 10—11:30am at Beautiful Savior.

For six weeks we will examine subjects: the group’s

origin (Joseph Smith, the Book of Mormon, Brigham

Young, and others); the discrepancy between Mormon

beliefs and orthodox Christian teaching; the meaning

of its rituals (baptism of the dead, endowments for the

living and dead, temple garments, celestial marriage);

and the prominence of the temple.

There is also a section where we will hear former Mor-

mons share how their decision to exit the group was a

bewildering disillusioned experience. Once out many

found themselves cut off and ostracized by their fami-

lies.

Please feel free to invite your friends.

Have you ever gone to bed afraid? You may be thinking about the events of the day or maybe tomorrow’s events. Or you may just be afraid of the unknown as you lay there trying to go to sleep. My husband and I were in India a few years ago and due to unforeseen circumstances, we found ourselves at a motel, in the middle of the night. We had no connections with our tour company, we knew no one in the area and had no idea where we were located. We were at the mercy of complete strangers that spoke little English, and we had to

trust them to keep us safe and get us back to the airport the next morning. Needless to say, I was afraid, worried, and didn’t sleep very well that night. “I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Psalm 4:8

This verse was part of my devotions the next morning, wow! God is my fortress; He is with me when I lie down and when I rise. I had no reason to worry, God is with me no matter what. When times are scary and you are afraid, remember that your Heavenly Father is with you al-ways and will be. Do not become discouraged or afraid but turn to the One who is always with you, in all situations, today and in the future! Let your hope rest in Him who gave everything for you! In Christ, Shelly "Indigo" Karolus Director of Donor Relations (1 of 2)

Have you ever lost something you really needed to find? I have a dog named Sweep who has proven remarkably creative at times in breaking free from the constraints that are designed to keep him safe—whether they be his leash, or my fenced-in yard—in pursuit of his one great passion: chasing the many, many deer that roam the woods around camp. I remember one such time when Sweep escaped from my yard. It was the worst-case scenario: I went outside to call him in from the backyard only to find him gone, with no idea where he had gone or even in what direction. Worse still, it would be

dark out in around 30 minutes, and he didn’t currently have his collar on or any easy way of corralling him once he was found. Swallowing down panic, I grabbed a couple of collars and leashes and went over to recruit the help of my next door neighbor, Sojo. Sojo shares the other side of the camp-owned Duplex in which I live, and has been on several Sweep-finding expeditions before. I explained the situation and set her searching a loop on one side of camp’s property while I took the other side. I jogged through the woods, breaking through snow, calling out “Pup Pup Pup!” and stopping periodically to see if I could hear the sounds of an energetic Border Collie crashing through the woods. Nothing. It was get-ting very dark out now, and although I tried to stay calm, my mind was racing with all the possible scenarios. What if I don’t find him? What if he gets hit by a car? What if he chases a deer off camp’s property and gets truly lost? What do I do? And then….my cell phone rang. I fumbled with my gloves to answer the phone and heard Sojo’s voice on the other end, telling me that she had found Sweep and managed to get a collar and leash on him. He was safe! She was bringing him home! The sense of relief that swept over me was vast. More than that, a great feeling of joy welled up. What was wrong had been put to right. What was lost was now found. What had been broken was now made whole. Coming back to my house and seeing a bouncy, happy pup waiting for me was the best feeling in the world. In Luke 15, Jesus talks about the joy of finding lost things. Jesus is hanging out with a bunch of tax collectors and other “sinners”, and the Pharisees don’t like it. They’re judging Jesus and the company he chooses to keep. So Jesus tells them a parable about a lost sheep, and then a lost coin, and finally a lost son. He uses these stories to drive home his point: God is in the business of seeking out the lost. And the Father will always celebrate with joy when the prodigal returns home. Take hope in the truth that we have a heavenly Father who loves us deeply, and who measures our worth not in our accomplishments or right deeds, but in His actions on our behalf. In Christ, Beth "Kardia" Lutz Director of Programs (2 of 2)
