Jesus Rejected in NazarethLuke 4:14-30

MAIN POINT: JESUS EXPLAINED THAT THE SCRIPTURES TELL ABOUT HIM.

Jesus went to His hometown, Nazareth. On the Sabbath day, Jesus went to the synagogue like He usually did.

Jesus stood up to read Scripture. He unrolled the scroll of the prophet Isaiah and read: “The Spirit of the Lord is on Me. He has chosen Me to tell good news to the poor. He has sent Me to tell the captives that they are free, to tell the blind that they can see, to free people who have been treated badly, and to announce that the Lord’s favor is on us.” Then Jesus rolled up the scroll. He gave it back to the attendant and sat down.

Jesus said, “Today as you listened to Me reading these words, they came true.”The people said good things about Jesus, and they were amazed at Him. But

some of the people in Nazareth had known Jesus from His youth. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.

Jesus said, “No prophet is accepted in his hometown.” Jesus reminded the people of the prophets Elijah and Elisha. When there was a terrible famine in Israel, God sent Elijah to help a widow in another land.

And when Elisha was a prophet, many people in Israel had leprosy. But Elisha did not heal them. Instead, he healed a man named Naaman from Syria.

The people listening to Jesus in the synagogue became angry. They forced Jesus out of town.

Christ Connection: Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, the prophet Isaiah wrote about God’s plan to send a Messiah. He would bring good news and redeem people who were broken and hurting. Jesus read Isaiah’s words and told everyone who was listening that He is the promised Messiah.

Think about how you feel when someone rejects you. Write a short prayer, thanking God for always accepting us through His Son, Jesus.

“How can anyone be

born when he is old?”

(John 3:4)

“Come, see a man who told

me everything I ever did!

Could this be the Messiah?”

(John 4:29)

“He must increase,

but I must decrease.”

(John 3:30)

“The Spirit of the Lord is

on Me, because He has

anointed Me to preach

good news to the poor.” (Luke 4:18)

Face Time Draw a face that shows each emotion. Then listen to the Bible story to hear how people felt when Jesus spoke.

Sojourn Kids Assembly Unit 21, Session 4

Title: Jesus Rejected in Nazareth

Scripture: Luke 4:14-30

Supply List: homemade scroll, any tool such as a wrench, etc.

Main Point: Jesus explained that the Scriptures tell about Him or, “The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about Jesus.” Big Picture Question: Who did Jesus say He is? Jesus said He is the Messiah. Introduce It:

When it’s your turn, run into the assembly area acting like you’re out of breath and holding a homemade scroll (it can be a simple piece of rolled paper). Loudly make the statements below–still breathing heavily like you ran to the class, perhaps holding your stomach like you would after a marathon. Say: I have some great news!! You are not going to believe it! The news I have is so great, it will change your life. You’ll never be the same after I tell you this awesome news! Ask: Do you want to know what the news is? Are you sure? Say: Here goes! (Act like you’re reading from the scroll. Let the suspense build. Have fun with it.) “Today is Sunday!!!!”

Ask: Isn’t that life-changing news? You don’t think so? Why? If that’s not great news, what would be good news for a kid? (Let them use their imagination and give a few suggestions.) Say: You’re right about the news on my scroll–it wasn’t amazing. I’m glad it’s Sunday, but Sundays are pretty normal. They happen every week. Today I will be teaching about news that really is good. It’s great! It’s the best news ever! Main Point: The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about Jesus (Use only 1 motion. During the main point and throughout the lesson, have them put their hands high in the air & shake them any time they hear “Good News.” The motion is similar to being on a roller coaster or an excited fan at a basketball game.) Explain It:

Say: At SojournKids, we learn from the Bible. It’s the most important book in the whole world because it gives us God’s Word about Jesus. Today’s lesson is from Luke, Chapter 4. Say: When Jesus began to do the work God had sent him to do, he went back to his hometown where he had grown up as a boy. Ask: Do you know where he grew up? (Not Bethlehem. That’s where he was born. He later moved and grew up in Nazareth.) Say: On the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue and stood up to read from God’s Word. His Bible didn’t look like ours (with a book cover and spine). He read from a scroll like the one

I’m carrying. Picture the scene! Imagine as he was handed the scroll and began to read! Ask: What Old Testament verse do you think he read? (Let them guess.) Listen, then I’ll tell you where it’s from:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim GOOD NEWS to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. (Lk 4:18-20)

Say: Jesus read from Isaiah 61. Isaiah promised Jesus would come! Isaiah promised he would have God’s Spirit upon him. God would send him to give GOOD NEWS to the poor, to set free people in prison to sin and suffering, and to make the blind see. Isaiah wrote about the future before it happened. Say: Imagine how cool it would be if someone told your future today before it happened. Picture how you’d feel if you went back to your classroom, started eating your Goldfish, and then one of your friends tells you, “Today, on your way home from church, a purple elephant is going to fall out of the sky and land on the hood of your car. Then, when you get home, you’ll go to your bedroom and find 25 pink monkeys jumping on your bed. Then, on your way to school tomorrow, you’ll discover that your school has been replaced by Kings Island!” All that might seem crazy, until it actually happens. If it happened, you’d call your friend a prophet (someone who preaches about the future).

Ask: Isaiah was an OT prophet with a message much more important. Who was Isaiah preaching about? Jesus said, “Isaiah was talking about me.” Listen to him:

He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked. Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’” (Luke 4:21-23)

Ask: Have you ever asked someone to prove something they said they could do? For instance, if a boy bragged that he can hit a homerun, you might say, “Prove it!” If a girl bragged that she can run faster than anyone else, you might say, “Prove it!” Say: Thankfully, Jesus didn’t just say it. He proved it! In the verses that follow, Jesus did everything Isaiah promised (Luke 4:31-44). He told a demon to leave a man’s body. The demon obeyed. He told a fever to stop making Simon’s mother sick. The fever obeyed. He helped many poor & sick people. Then he said, “I have to keep going. God has sent me to bring GOOD NEWS!” Main Point: The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about Jesus Connect it:

Say: In my hand I’m holding a tool (any tool will work such as

Page 8: Jesus Rejected in Nazareth - sojournchurch.com · Jesus Rejected in Nazareth Luke 4:14-30 MAIN POINT: JESUS EXPLAINED THAT THE SCRIPTURES TELL ABOUT HIM. Jesus went to His hometown,

a wrench, pliers, channel locks, etc.). Ask: Does anyone know what this tool is used for? Is it to brush my teeth? (Pretend to do this.) Is it to comb my hair? (Pretend). Say: You’re right. This tool has a specific purpose and is very important. (Briefly explain the tool.) Because it’s so important, I need to know what to do with it. The same is true with God’s GOOD NEWS. Because the whole Bible tells us about it, and because it’s all about Jesus, we must know what to do with it.

1. First, let’s believe it! Luke wanted his readers to believe in and follow Jesus Christ. Trust the gospel. Trust Jesus.

2. Also, let’s share it! Luke wrote so his readers would know that the gospel is for all people–no matter what country they’re from, how much money they have, or how popular. Think of a friend you need to talk with about Jesus & invite to SojournKids.

Let’s say the main point one more time: The whole Bible tells us GOOD NEWS about Jesus Prayer: Pray that the kids will believe and share the gospel.
