Words from the Rabbi...

Rabbi Michael S. Jay

In the Al HaNissim prayer that we sing during the holiday of Hanukkah, we acknowledge and thank God for the miracles that enabled the Hasmoneans to defeat the Syrian-Greek Army, which, in turn, enabled the Temple to be rededicated and theTemple Menorah to be relit. While God may have made the miracles possible, those who actually fought the battles and purified the Temple, those who actually relit the menorah and brought the first sacrifices of the cleansed Temple, were the Maccabbees and their allies. We thank and praise God as we should, but we should never lose sight of the human factor.

In fact, our tradition does a very good job of spreading the credit between God and God’s human partners. Why is this important? Because our tradition has consistently taught us that we are partners with God in this play we call life and in the Torah’s continuing story. God searches for Adam and Eve in the garden; God calls on Noah to build the ark; God calls out to Abraham to go on a journey; God calls Moses to action to be the redeemer of the Israelite slaves in Egypt. God is consistently seeking human partners to help achieve God’s goals.

There is a meta-lesson to be learned from this. God, Torah, and our tradition, are modeling the fact that partnership is important and that it has been important from the very beginning. The clear message is that, in order to best achieve our goals, we need to partner with others. I would venture that if each of us looks at his/her accomplishments, we will find that we were not alone.

Our JCC of LBI is a place where partnership is important and key. Very little can be done without the help of someone else or from a group of people. As I am writing this article, we have just finished the High Holy Day season. Thank God, the JCC had a very meaningful and successful Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, and Simchat Torah holiday cycle. Services and all of the corresponding activities that happen before during and after services do not happen in a vacuum. Ticket sales, meals, children’s programming, set-up, Torah reading, Shofar blowing, honors, etc., all happen because people partner with the JCC to make them happen.

When we have programming -- from Shabbat services, to classes, to Mah Jongg, to bazaars, to concerts, to speakers, to beach services -- each of these things happens because we have partners who help us do them. Sheri’s Rosh Hodesh programs happen because she finds partners to offer their homes and help with the programming. Some partners physically do work, some partners come up with good ideas, some partners make donations, and some partners help to coordinate. The common element is that the things that the JCC does best get done because folks work together to accomplish them.

I partner with you when you ask me to lead a lifecycle event, or when you ask me to visit a relative or friend in the hospital, or when you attend my classes, or when you write to ask a question about Torah or our tradition. We connect because you seek that partnership. We connect because I seek that partnership. Rose Valentine, the JCC’s president, works best when the Board partners with her to accomplish goals. The Board works best when

ALL WE NEED IS A MINYAN

It was so exciting to see the JCC filled this Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur with our members and guests. Sitting on the bimah, I could see in the back of the social hall babies in their strollers and families sharing the holiday together. A tradition in our synagogue is to open the ark during Neilah and invite everyone to approach the ark with last minute pleas for redemption. This year in particular, there were several families who climbed the steps of the bimah and stood in front of the open aron kodesh. As the grandfathers spread their tallism around their loved ones, I could not help but think how special that must be for them and how privileged it was for the rest of us to witness. It is wonderful to have this beautiful synagogue and to provide such a magnificent setting for the High Holidays.

With hardly a chance to breathe, Sukkot and Simchat Torah holidays were upon us. Services three days in a row for two weeks in a row; kiddushes in the Sukkah; having a minyan to read the last portion of Deuteronomy and the first parshah in Genesis on Simchat Torah. Would it all happen? I am pleased to report it did all happen. On Simchat Torah, we had our minyan, helped by a couple visiting from Baltimore, who instantly became part of our congregation. It was a wonderful feeling to be part of the ten (actually 11) that morning. In some ways it was as gratifying as davening with over 300.

On Rosh Hashanah I asked you to make a gift to our High Holiday Appeal. The success of the appeal is crucial in order for us to operate within our budget. Thank you to so many of our members and guests who answered the Appeal. I “appeal” to those who have not sent in their yearly donation to take a minute to fill out the blue card sent to you in the mail and return it with your contribution. Appeal cards are available in the office.

On Yom Kippur my appeal was for your time. Be a volunteer. We need you. When you volunteer, you are actually making a monetary donation. Be a participant in the various activities here at the JCC. Be a cheerleader for your synagogue. Tell

From the Desk ofJeri Riffle, Executive Director

Summer is over, and fall has arrived, with winter not far behind. The High Holidays have been celebrated, and many of our “snow birds” have begun to travel south for the winter. Many activities, however, continue here at our JCC.

We had a beautiful B’Not Mitzvah and a baby naming here in mid-September. Having children in our temple and seeing them take part in our Jewish culture is such a blessing. Our movie nights for September and October were well attended and very successful, thanks to our film committee. Mah Jongg continues through the month of October and will resume again in the spring.

High Holiday services this year were held at the end of September and attended by many. Rabbi Michael Jay and Cantor Avi Green once again chanted melodious tunes, and the shofar was sounded to ring in the New Year. May we all be inscribed in the book of life! Sisterhood did a lovely job putting out a beautiful Break-the-Fast.

Religious school began October 1st with an Open House and creating decorations that were hung in our Sukkah. The Sukkah was constructed, decorated, and enjoyed by many. There was a pizza dinner available on Simchat Torah. A family Shabbat will be offered on October 21st. A huge thank you to Lynn Berkowitz -- our very special “Mrs. B” -- for her many years of service to our religious school and for giving our students a Jewish education. She reached out to several generations of students here at the JCC of LBI.

For those of us around this winter, think about how you could spend your time at the JCC. With a Men’s Club and a Sisterhood, there are several opportunities to get involved and help our synagogue with wonderful programs. Our office staff is always looking for volunteers to help, so think about giving us a call or stop in to see us!

your friends and neighbors how welcoming it is at the JCC. Be proud that there is a thriving Jewish center here in this area. You will find a list of Committees in this Bulletin along with the Chair people. Call them if you want to be part of their committee, if you have expertise in the particular area or have an idea to share with them. It will be appreciated. What is a minyan? Ten Jewish individuals necessary for communal

service. Even though each of these individuals can be powerful on their own, together as ten they are complete. Join our JCC minyan and together we can accomplish much!

! We hope that 5778 will be a good and sweet year for all!! Break-the-Fast was wonderful and delicious, and we hope all of you who attended agree! A big thank you to all of the volunteers that helped make it possible. ! We had a good closing meeting with a lot of brainstorming for next season. Thank you to those who attended and for your wonderful ideas! If you weren’t at the meeting, your ideas are always welcomed. ! We are planning a Shabbat Hanukkah Dinner on Friday, December 15th, and hope many of you will make it so we can light the fourth candle together. Please watch your email for details as we approach December! ! Whether you have already flown South, or if you are still in the area, please keep in touch, and let your fellow Sisters know what’s happening in your lives.

Best to you all,

NEWS The JCC of LBI welcomes Linda Marr, the new librarian for our Library. We wish her all the best in this activity and encourage everyone to take advantage of our beautiful library. As you know, books can be borrowed for any length of time. We just ask that they eventually be returned. Linda reminds us that we are always looking for book donations -- fiction, non-fiction, history, biography, etc., but the books must be of Jewish content or interest, because of our limited space. Please remember that we cannot use old prayer books, Bibles, or Sunday school history books.

Linda is a graduate of Alfred University and has been coming to LBI since 1948. In 2002, she moved here and joined the JCC. She is a docent at the Long Beach Island Historical Association Museum in Beach Haven, where her husband, Ron, is President, and Linda still works part time as a substitute teacher.

We also thank Judith Pripstein for her many years of service as our JCC Librarian. She completes a service of about 12 years as JCC librarian, and a total of about 35 years as a congregation librarian. As a result of the 1982 merger between two congregations in Greensburg, PA, Judith became the librarian of the merged congregation. She held that post until she left Greensburg in 2005. At that time, she volunteered to take charge of the single shelf of library books that we had in a bottom shelf of one of the bookcases in back of our old building. After expanding it to a second shelf, we then converted a section of the entrance area into a library with several bookcases. One of them did double duty as our temporary Ark when we had High Holiday services in Loveladies at the Foundation and at St. Clare’s church. In our new building, the library now consists of over 1,000 books of Jewish interest on 45 (yes 45, count them) shelves in the Library/Board Room.

Thank you, Judith, for your

mighty efforts!!!

Winter Shabbat PlansWill Warm Things Up!!!

Plans are being finalized for a special Shabbat at the JCC of LBI this winter. One Shabbat a month, you can spend Saturday at the synagogue. There will be Torah Study and Services as usual, but in addition there will be a traditional cholent (see below) lunch and game afternoon. Mah jongg lessons will be given as well. No betting or money will be exchanged. You can participate in any or all of these activities.

! ! ! ! Cholent is a traditional ! ! ! ! Jewish stew, which is ! ! ! ! usually simmered ! ! ! ! overnight and eaten for ! ! ! ! lunch on Shabbat. The ! ! ! ! name comes from the ! ! ! ! French language – chaud ! ! ! ! means hot and lent means slow. It was developed over the centuries to conform with Jewish law that prohibits cooking on the Sabbath. The pot is brought to a boil on Friday before the Sabbath begins, and kept on a hotplate, or placed in a slow oven or electric slow cooker, until the following day.

High Holiday Report - 5778Once again an inspiring High Holiday season was had at the JCC of LBI. Rabbi Michael Jay and Cantor Avi Green led us beautifully in prayer and their words and melodies provided an atmosphere of holiness, enhanced by the lovely bimah flower arrangements donated by Jody Brusilow, Myron Hirsch and Kem Spencer. It takes time and commitment to organize the holidays and many thanks are in order. The High Holiday Committee lead by Carole Nunberg with the able assistance of Kem Spencer, Harold Farin & Paula Hait took care of the seating and for the first time, assigning the honors prior to the holidays. Our ushers Harold Farin, Kem Spencer and Stuart Pepose made sure that all were seated and our Gabbaim Harold Farin, Stan Berman and Harris Weisel skillfully kept everything running smoothly on the bimah. Yasher Koach to our Torah leyners Aaron Lombardi, Mark Rosenthal, and Ira Morgenthal; our Haftorah chanters Don Pripstein, Ira Morgenthal and the Women of the Congregation (Jonah) and all those who received honors. Special thanks to Cantor Green and Terri Robinovitz, aided by Kayla & Zach Lombardi, for providing a holiday service for our children. The holidays came to a close with a delicious Break-the-fast prepared by Sisterhood mavens Carole Nunberg and Bonnie Farin. A tremendous amount of administrative work goes into the preparation and sale of tickets, mailings, and the Book of Remembrance and thanks must go to our able staff, Leslie Dinkfelt, Jeri Riffle, and Marcie Deutsch, for a job well done. We are grateful to all of our congregants, their families, and friends who shared these holidays with us, making the days so meaningful. Wishing all a happy, healthy, and prosperous 5778!

ENDOWMENT FUND

At its October meeting, the JCC of LBI Board of Trustees passed a motion which states that a minimum pledge of at least $50,000 will allow specific Endowment Funds to be named as the donor wishes and that all such named funds will be joined together along with other Endowment Fund contributions to be a part of the overall Endowment Fund portfolio. This allows others to join Herb and Selma Shapiro in helping assure the continuity of our JCC and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund, whether as a specific named fund or as a general donation. Two methods of making this contribution and receiving maximum benefit from it are: 1) as long as the gift comes directly from the fund or your fund advisor, charitable contributions from your iRA or 401K accounts are not reportable as taxable income, and 2) the gift qualifies for all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution. The stock market has more than tripled in the past few years. This is a good time to lock in those gains and avoid the taxes on them. Benefits of donating appreciated stocks and mutual funds include: avoiding Capital Gains Tax, receiving an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stocks, and capturing the appreciated value of your stocks without the worry of future market ups and downs. Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC of LBI Office. Please inform our office that a contribution will be coming from your investment advisor, or check with the office to learn how appreciated stocks can be directly gifted to JCC.

Kol HaKavod Campaign has been Renewed

We have completed our three-year Kol HaKavod program which supported our clergy needs over these last few years. Our goal was to raise $60,000 over this period ($20,000 per year), and, as always, many of you responded, and we were able to realize $62,960 donated. KOL HAKAVOD!We are renewing our Kol HaKavod Fund again this year. Some of our former donors have already made their contributions for 2017. I have reached out to others for their commitment as well. We hope others will also come forward. You may make your gift over three years.

Chai Level:$1,800 over three years ($600 a year)

Double Chai Level:$3,600 over three years ($1,200 a year)

Triple Chai Level:$5,400 over three years ($1,800 a year)

We will, of course, be grateful for a gift to the fund at any time. Please go to the web site to download the Kol HaKavod form:

https://jccoflbi.files.wordpress.com/2014/03/kolhakavod-fund2.pd

or call the office for the form to be sent to you. All donations will be anonymous.

YAHRZEIT OBSERVANCES

Words from the RabbiContinued from Page 2it finds congregants to help perform various tasks.

Partnership is part of God’s plan.As we continue in this year of 5778, find ways to partner with the JCC. Join us for services. Send ideas for programming. Send ideas for sermons. Write or email us and ask what you can help with. Let us know how we can help you. Join us in October of 2018 as we take a JCC community trip to Israel. Become a more involved part of our JCC family.Partner with me, partner with the board, partner with the JCC. Fulfill God’s vision of holy connection. The candles on the menorah are each (and all) lit by the Shamash (or “helper”) candle. This means that at no time is there only one candle shining on the Menorah. Each night finds candles partnering to create a brighter light. While one light alone can break the darkness, two or more lights push the darkness farther away. The more candles in the menorah partnership, the greater and more beautiful the light.

Chag Urim Sameach (A Happy Festival of Lights) – Rabbi Michael S. Jay
