The MISSION of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to promote the practice of tzedakah (righteousness, charity) and the pursuit of tikkun olam (repairing the world) by serving as the central resource and advocate for planned giving and endowments in the Kansas City Jewish community. We accomplish this by:

Building financial resources to promote sustainable Jewish communal organizations and programs;Engaging, educating and inspiring multiple generations of givers throughout the Jewish community; andProviding creative philanthropic planning expertise to individuals and families to assist them in achieving their charitable goals.

The VISION of the Jewish Community Foundation of Greater Kansas City is to foster, sustain and ensure a strong and vibrant Jewish community for today and for generations to come.

Giving in Harmony

2 JCFKC.ORG | SMARTER GIVING. YOUR WAY.

Lauren Mattleman HoopesExecutive Director

Irvin V. BelzerPresident

Take the beauty of a single, well-sung note, add another at just the right interval and then another and another. Each one sounds sweet alone, but layered together creates something greater, something transformative. In life, as in music, harmony is worth pursuing. And so it is with the work of the Jewish Community Foundation. Each of you brings an individual voice that is critical to our mission and to our community’s future.

This year, contributions to Foundation funds grew significantly with estate distributions playing a tremendous role. Customized giving plans including grandchildren, restricted funds for special projects, and corporate scholarship funds also contributed to the diversity of creative giving that the Foundation stimulated in 2015.

The bequest from the late Christa Louis (page 21), representing the second-largest gift to the Foundation in its history, was especially noteworthy, not just for its size, but for its impact. It has created a permanent endowment fund, seeded with a donor advised fund created during Christa’s lifetime, which will provide seven Jewish organizations in Kansas City with unrestricted support in perpetuity. This kind of unrestricted support is increasingly rare, and can be the key to the long-term financial sustainability of charitable organizations and their core programs. We are thrilled for the beneficiaries and honored to be entrusted with this important legacy.

Large or small, every act of tzedakah makes our community and our world a better, more harmonious place. We appreciate your partnership and look forward to another year of working together in this worthy endeavor.

Our Programs

The Jewish Community Foundation provides a variety of opportunities for members of our Foundation Family to experience the value and rewards of charitable giving. From B’nai Tzedek, our teen philanthropy program, to J-LEAD, our young adult giving circle, to Create a Jewish Legacy, our planned giving initiative, participants add their own unique voice and perspective to our charitable chorus.

The B’nai Tzedek program introduces B’nai Mitzvah-age youth to charitable giving by allowing them to open their own “giving” funds at the Foundation. B’nai Tzedek teaches teens about the agencies that help meet the needs of the Jewish community and empowers them to make a positive difference in the world. Teens and their families make a minimum donation of $125 to open a fund, and JCF contributes $375, for a total balance of $500. Every year participants may grant 10% of their fund balance to a Jewish agency either locally or in Israel. See page 17 for a list of B’nai Tzedek fundholders.

J-LEAD (Jewish Leadership, Education, Action and Development) brings young Jewish adults in their 20s, 30s and 40s together to make a substantive difference in the Jewish community. J-LEAD is a giving circle that makesgrants from funds collected by its members ($500 charitable contribution for membership) as well as matching funds from the Jewish Community Foundation’s Community Legacy Fund and other generous Foundation donors.

By pooling resources together and collectively making grant decisions, J-LEAD members are able to achieve a greater impact than any one member could do alone.

Voices of JCF“Philanthropy is very important to me and being on the B’nai Tzedek Youth Council, a group of teens that engages peers in philanthropy, gives me an opportunity to help others become involved.” - Braxton Hammontree (above, left)

“The best part about the B’nai Tzedek Shuk [JCF’s annual youth philanthropy fair] was that I learned that even though I am just a Midwestern Jewish teen, I can still make a difference in the world.”- Sagi Rudnick (above, right)

Create a Jewish Legacy (CJL) is JCF’s effort to help secure the long-term future of community programs and institutions through an emphasis on planned giving. CJL is the next generation of our highly successful Bushman Community Endowment (BCE) program which was launched in 2007 as a way to help local Jewish agencies and congregations learn to better cultivate planned gifts. Goals of CJL include securing planned gifts, ensuring stewardship, developing strong leaders and building public awareness of planned giving. See page 19 for a list of donors who have created a Jewish legacy with a planned gift for the community.

$68 million estimated in future commitments

Voices of JCF Voices of JCF“We joined J-LEAD several years ago because we saw the value in pooling funds with a group to make a larger impact on several local organizations. Our contributions to J-LEAD have nicely complemented our commitments to other causes. The interactive nature of J-LEAD, through both the grant selection process and the family volunteering activities, is always fun and uplifting. Our children consistently enjoy participating and have learned the importance of chesed (loving kindness).”

- Eva & Jason Sokol

“Doing good in the communitywas instilled upon me through my family, Boy Scouts and otherorganizations. I understand the particular importance of planned giving and how it is needed to secure our Jewish future. I have worked directly with organizations to help build their endowments and recognize the valuable role that the Foundation can play. As chair of the Create a Jewish Legacy initiative, I would like to be sure that all those who have made planned gifts recognize the impact that they are making and how much they are appreciated.”

- Gary Cortes

Smarter Giving. Your Way.

When you give through a JCF Donor Advised Fund, you give to the organizations you want, when you want, and reap the benefits of smarter giving:

Streamlined giving - no more writing separate checks or cumbersome recordkeeping

Support all of your favorite charities - Jewish AND secular

Tax benefits - receive an immediate charitable income tax deduction when you open or add to your Fund

Professional and prudent investment of your Fund

Charitable Legacy - allow your children or grandchildren to manage your Fund after your lifetime

Reinvestment - administrative fees are used to enhance our community through educational programs for givers of all ages

Page 11: Jewish Community Foundation Annual Report 2015

Donor Advised Funds are charitable giving accounts that enable donors to give smarter. Established with contributions of $5,000 or more ($2,500 for those under age 35), a Donor Advised Fund allows donors to recommend grants to any qualified charitable organization. Donors may name successor advisors in order to encourage future generations to continue their tradition of giving.

“Opening a Donor Advised Fund has helped keep us organized around our philanthropy, particularly when it comes to having documentation to supply to Amy’s employer to take advantage of matching grants. We support a variety of organizations and doing so is easy via the Foundation - the ability to log in and recommend grants at any time, from anywhere, is convenient. We are comfortable and confident having our fund at a Jewish community institution, and would recommend creating a fund to anyone who wants to be thoughtful and intentional about their philanthropy.”

“With our commitment to Judaism and so many deserving causes, it was natural for us to move our Donor Advised Fund from a major national organization to the Jewish Community Foundation of Kansas City. As our daughter studies to become a rabbi, and with our son having lived and studied in Israel, JCF offers an effortless way for us to both follow in our family’s long tradition of supporting worthy causes, and to renew and reinforce our dedication to giving in this generation and those to follow. All of us feel more engaged in giving when our family fund donates locally, so we’re also delighted to now have a fund whose staff members have expertise in local charities.”

“Giving back to the community is very important to us. In trying to do as much as we can, we look for the most efficient opportunities. When the IRA Charitable Rollover was permanently extended in 2015, we were thrilled to have a partner in the Jewish Community Foundation helping us establish a fund to support various charities that we care deeply about.”

“Our parents, Julius and Dorothy Peltzman, left behind an incredible legacy that is present in our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren. Judaism, education and community ranked high among their core values and by creating a scholarship fund for students of Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy, we ensure that their legacy of giving will continue for generations to come. “We are passionate about helping to repair the world, in our own unique way. Our plan integrates both the values we want to sustain and the issues and organizations we support. The Jewish Community Foundation listened to our goals and created a strategy that made great sense for us. It’s comforting to have our plan in place, while knowing we can make changes in the future.”

21SMARTER GIVING. YOUR WAY. | JCFKC.ORG

When Christa Louis worked with the Foundation to establish a Donor Advised Fund, she included the provision that at her death, her fund would be converted into a permanent endowment which would benefit seven local Jewish organizations in perpetuity. At that time, JCF staff discussed with Louis the possibility of adding a charitable bequest to her fund to further her charitable legacy, but were not made aware that she had completed formal plans to do so. Louis passed away in March of 2014.

Create a Jewish LegacyPlanned gifts are simple to establish and ensure that your values, and those of the charitable causes you care about, will continue into the future. For more information contact Josh Stein at (913) 327-8121 or [email protected].

Thirteen months later, Lauren Hoopes received a call from the trustee of Louis’ trust at UMB Bank and learned that the Foundation had been designated the sole remainder beneficiary of Louis’ trust. When fully distributed, Louis’ gift is expected to add more than $8.5 million to the Fund. The generous endowment will provide annual income to: Congregation Beth Shalom’s Mount Carmel Cemetery; Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy; The J; Jewish Family Services; Rabbi Gershon Hadas Guardian Society for Children - Camp and Israel Scholarships; The Temple, Congregation B’nai Jehudah’s Rose Hill Cemetery; and, Village Shalom.

“Christa was a very giving person,” says Seymour Krinsky, Louis’ long-time friend and financial advisor. “Though she would not have liked this attention when she was alive, she would be happy that her gift might motivate others to give back to their community.” Louis’ is the second largest endowment gift in Jewish Community Foundation history.

In MemoriamWe remember with appreciation the members of our Foundation Family whom we lost in 2015. We were indeed blessed by their love of community and generous spirit.

Voices of JCF

As a life-long active member of the Jewish community, Sam Gould understood the importance of creating a Jewish legacy to ensure vibrant Jewish life in Kansas City for future generations. He worked with JCF staff to create endowment funds to support the institutions he held dear. He created the Lucy and Sam Gould Charitable Fund for the Jewish Community Center to provide a perpetual stream of income for the J, an organization he considered a ‘home away from home’ throughout his life. The Lucy and Sam Gould Charitable Fund for Kehilath Israel Synagogue was established to support the congregation of which he was a member, lifetime board member and past president. In making planned giving arrangements, Gould said, “I thought that it would be well that I consider the synagogue and the Center because I get so much out of that. I feel that there will have been something that I have left that will have some benefit to these agencies.”

Sam Gould

In addition to providing a stable financial future for the institutions he loved, Gould also made arrangements to provide safety-net services for individuals and families in times of need. The Sam and Lucy Gould Gesher Fund is an endowment fund which offers one-time emergency financial assistance for members of the Kansas City Jewish community.

The Jewish Community Foundation was blessed by Gould’s generosity as well. With his financial support, JCF was able to create a new office space on the Jewish Community Campus in 2006. JCF staff and visitors are reminded daily of Gould’s generosity by a plaque hanging in the reception area which commemorates the office dedication on May 17, 2006.

Gould’s kindness touched many lives. The Foundation is truly honored to be entrusted with ensuring his lasting charitable legacy.

The Jewish Heritage Foundation was created in 1994 as a private foundation to serve as a steward of the $29 million that resulted from the sale of Menorah Medical Center to Health Midwest. It remains deeply committed to Menorah’s tradition of healing and compassionate service.

The mission of the Jewish Heritage Foundation is to promote health and general well-being in the Kansas City metropolitan area, with a priority to serve the Jewish community.

In January of 2013, the Jewish Heritage Foundation formally became a Supporting Organization of the Jewish Community Foundation while maintaining its separate and distinct Board of Directors. The move to become a Supporting Organization was a natural outgrowth of the Jewish Heritage Foundation’s firm belief that collaboration is absolutely essential for the survival and effectiveness of nonprofit agencies.

2015 Grant Highlights:

The elements that shaped Menorah Medical Center and helped it thrive – passion for excellence, reverence for learning, commitment to justice and nondiscrimination, and dedication to charity and acts of loving-kindness – live on through the mission of the Jewish Heritage Foundation.

Effective April 1, 2016, the Jewish Heritage Foundation and the Menorah Legacy Foundation merged and became known as the Menorah Heritage Foundation. The Menorah Legacy Foundation grew out of similar roots as the Jewish Heritage Foundation, as it was successor to the Menorah Medical Center Foundation.

Program and core grants are made in three primary areas: Kansas City Jewish agencies, general community health and human services, and senior services in the general community.
