new perspective on the Holocaustavailable to coincide with the seventieth anniversary of the end of WWII and the liberation of the Nazi death and concentration camps by Allied troops.

For the children and grandchildren of Holocaust (Shoah) survivors and refugees from Nazi persecution, the suf-fering and survival of their immediate ancestors and the annihilation of virtually their entire families have in large part shaped their perspectives on God, faith and Jewish identity.

This extremely personal and often idiosyncratic lega-cy was transmitted first and foremost by the survivors to their own children and grandchildren. There is no single form of this legacy. Some survivors spoke about their experiences in the ghettos and camps; others envel-oped themselves and their families in a cloud of silence, shrouding their past in an aura of mystery and secrecy.

There have been many books and studies about children of survivors—the so-called Second and Third Generations—with a psycho-social focus. This book is different. It is intended to reflect what they believe, who they are and how that informs what they are doing with their lives.

With almost ninety contributors from a broad range of occupational, professional and geographic backgrounds in sixteen countries on six continents, this collection rep-resents the widest possible religious, political and ideo-logical spectrum.

Despite the contributor’s diversity, common themes shine through. These emotionally powerful, deeply moving statements will have a profound effect on the way our and future generations understand and shape their understanding of the Holocaust and their own per-sonal identity in years to come.

“ Writing with their hearts and minds, these children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors remember the horrors experienced by their parents, and refl ect on the understandings of God that animate their own lives. A truly interesting book!”

—SUSANNAH HESCHEL, Eli Black Professor of Jewish Studies,

Dartmouth College

“ This book is a monumental achievement, bringing to light in a deeply moving way how the children and grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, from sixteen countries and every continent, and every walk of life and across every religious, political and ideological spectrum, have been impacted by the Holocaust. It is essential reading for those interested in assuring that the memory of the Holocaust does not fade with the passing of the generation of victims.” —AMBASSADOR STUART E. EIZENSTAT,

former Special Representative of the President and Secretary of State for Holocaust Issues in the Clinton Administration, while also holding four senior positions, and an offi cial in four U.S. administrations

Menachem Z. Rosensaft is general counsel of the World Jewish Congress. He teaches about the law of genocide and war crimes trials at the law schools of Columbia and Cornell Universities. He was appointed by Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council.

Prologue by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel.

Reconnect with Judaism’s most important contribution to humanity—and redeem our world.

“ The gift of Judaism is an understanding of what it means to be a human being—what we can do, what we can hope for, how we can live with purpose, what is ex-pected of us. It is a celebration of human freedom, human possibility and human responsibility. Judaism is a way to live a heroic life, to construct a life devoted to values that are eternal, values of ultimate significance. The reward of a Jewish life is walking the world with a profound faith that you matter, your life matters, your dreams matter. I call this chutzpah.”

—FROM THE INTRODUCTION

“ A brilliant exposition of Judaism and its insistence that our defi ning religious contribution is chutzpah, the quality we must have and use to work together to improve the world.”

—RUTH MESSINGER, president, American Jewish World Service

“ Beautiful, provocative, evocative … delivered by one of the great Jewish thinkers and teachers alive today…. Makes you yearn to see the Jewish tradition through Feinstein’s eyes—daring, complicated, full of promise and overfl owing with love.”

Being Jewish. What does it meantoday—and for the future?“ Daniel Pearl’s last words are those of a Jew who was assassinated only for his Jewishness. They will resonate in many hearts.... For a Jew, Judaism and humanity must go together. To be Jewish is to recog-nize that every person is created in God’s image and thus worthy of respect. Being Jewish to me is to reject fanaticism everywhere.” —ELIE WIESEL

in I Am Jewish

Upon request, we email review copies of books in PDF format for course adoption consideration.
