Last Wednesday saw South Africa’s fifth democratic election take place. Many citi-zens across the country got up early to be the first to make their mark and have their voice heard and JHB South was no differ-ent.The posts of resident’s thumbs hogged social media from early in the morning and by 10:00 in the morning queues snaked along the voting station with parking as far as four blocks away. Many residents have said the process was quick, once inside, with friendly faces at their assistance and that it was only the queuing in the morning that was long, however through out the day the queues shortened.tame TIMES visited various voting stations to witness history in the making.

It was a momentous and joyous ceremony when Abraham Kriel Childcare (AKC) was nominated as the beneficiary of the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund. The official handover of a donation cheque to Paul Momsen, chief executive of AKC, on behalf of well-known rugby players from the Fund took place on 8 May. Golden Lions rugby players Robert Du Bruin, Franco van der Merwe and Andries Coetzee were present at the handover.MyPlayers Benevolent Fund was founded in 2013 and launched by professional rugby players in South Africa and is the official charity organisation of the players. Professional rugby players in SA consider

themselves very fortunate in that they have the opportunity to live out their dreams of playing professional rugby. The rugby players feel that it is only fitting to give back and support communities who are less fortunate by donating funds from the players’ business to charitable causes around the country. The Fund made its first donation to the Chris Burger Petro Jackson fund last year as well as the J9 Foundation. This year, all 5 Super Rugby teams, the nine provinces as well as the Springboks will have an opportunity to donate to causes in their respective regions. “Although, there are so many deserving charities, the Golden Lions Rugby Union nominated Abraham Kriel Childcare. The organisation is dedicated to uplifting and improving the lives of so many children and the impact that it has on the lives of these

children is absolutely heartening to see. We know that this contribution will impact all of its beneficiaries,” Sam Nyaniso of the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund said.“We would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the MyPlayers Benevolent Fund as well as all of the players who are part of this organisation. Wow, one day most citizens are proudly South African posting pictures of their inked thumbs saying they made their mark and their voices were heard. The very next day those same people were posting angry comments asking what the point of voting was. This is due to the results of the ANC still gaining the majority of the votes.To be honest, I think I was fooled as well thinking that there was going to be a change. Not a major change, I think we all knew the ANC would win nationally but with Gauteng a lot of residents were hoping for them to not take the majority of the votes. To me there were more people who were proactive, who actually went out and voted, take my father - a few years back he was not interested- nothing to be proud of but this is the attitude of many white South Afri-cans- they will rather use the public holiday to go do leisurely activities than to go vote.But this year, my father registered and voted. I believe a lot of people’s attitudes have changed and they went to vote. Now, if there was a change in their attitude and they did vote, will the election results alter their mindset of voting the next time? I hope not but sadly I think it will.As I visited the voting stations in JHB South, I was searching for born-frees and either I went at the wrong times but I did not see any and speaking to Mr Louis Mofokeng, an ANC party agent ,outside Glenvista High School, he felt the same saying their non turn-out is disappointing. He said their prob-lems, both black and white, need to be ad-dressed. Why is the youth not voting?Another thing that I heard several times over this past week is that voting ANC is a cultural thing with one colleague saying ‘they have gotten us this far’, then my ques-tion is how does that explain EFF’s votes? Their results are good for their first election.Am I still a proud South African. Of course I am. Does this change my perception, no I still love all South Africans and I still have hope for my beloved country. I just most probably have to buy an e-tag now.

”COMARO VALLEY NURSERY SCHOOL: Susan and Richard Todd arrived at 7:00, stood in the queue for two hours and were out by 10:00. Susan said there are still a lot of young people not voting. “They are just not interested as they ask what’s the point.”Richard said it is every South African’s social responsibility and said voting should be compulsory. “People will moan for the rest of time but the people who are moaning are the people who are not voting. Why can’t they take two hours out of their day to make a change?”

I WANT A JOB: Glenvista resident Edith Masemolo said she voted for a change in South Africa.” I want a job and it is the government’s responsibility to provide job opportunities.”

IEC VOTING OFFICERS: Thuli Magwaza and Sibusiso Jiyane were part of the IEC team at Comaro Valley Nursery School. They explained the voting process from checking the sequence numbers, to crossing the name off the voters roll to stamping ID books, inking of thumbs, issuing ballot papers, proceeding to the booth and inserting ballots into boxes. “We will close the doors at 21:00, help everyone who is still in the queue then count the votes. They will be escorted to the head offices where they will be veri-fied and re-counted.” Magwaza has been working for the IEC since the first dem-ocratic election in 1994 and says more people are voting now.

VIVA ANC: ANC party agents Mahlatse Mashiane and Louis Mofokeng were stationed outside Glenvista High School. Mofokeng said that voting day is an endorsement of SA and it deepens democracy. “We understand and have taken responsibility and are pursuing the success of democracy and we are succeeding.” Mofokeng added that the turn out of born frees is disappointing. “They have stayed away and it shows we need to address their problems, both white and black.”

I’ve also been blessed with so many other motherly figures, my fabulous step-mother, certain work colleagues and others, that on Moth-er’s Day, I always say a prayer of gratitude for these angels that guide me in various ways. I take this opportunity to thank my mother, Dayle Williams aka Mommy Duck, for all she has done for me. Her unconditional love, her support, her advice and most of all her friendship. In the past year and a half I can honestly say she has become of my best friend, with me baring all my vulnerabilities to her, letting her see me at my weakest. However it was through this time that she made me see my value, my worth and that I am forever loved.She knows me better than I know myself, she accepts my over analyzing brain and even pokes jokes at it. She goes out of her way to make me happy, let it be making my favourite

meal, her macaroni and cheese or accompa-nying me to work functions when I don’t want to go by myself. She listens to all my stories and gives me the attention I often demand from her.Throughout my life, especially when I was a child, my mother was the backbone of our family. She was the strength for my sister and I as well as my father. It was through this time that she showed me what an important role a mother, a wife and a woman plays in the fam-ily. I hope when I have a family of my own that I will also be able to be the glue of my family just like my mother was.Her desire to see me and my sister happy goes beyond anything, and it showed this past Mother’s Day when the day was about her, she rather wanted to see my sister and I enjoy ourselves by reminiscing through old photos. In the past two weeks I was inundated with queries from people who have made application for ID’s. These people were not issued temporary ID’s as is the norm. A temporary ID allows citizens a form of identity whist waiting for the ID for which they applied. A number of these people have made enquiries with the Department of Home Affairs; the standard reply is that either their “system is down”, the application is “still being processed” and that temporary IDs are no longer issued.

I found this suspicious that on the eve of an election, many people were being disenfranchised of their vote because they had no form of identification when casting their ballot. One cannot vote if one does not produce a form of identification. Was there a concerted effort by Home Affairs, and their political masters, to ensure that some South Africans are unable to vote? It appears so. Anyone in this position should have gone to their local Home Affairs office and demanded a temporary ID.

Not issuing a temporary ID was an Election ploy

Manny de Freitas MP writes:

I am not surprised by the remarks made by the honourable Manny de Freitas in regards to the loss suffered by the Democratic Alliance when three of its public officers: Dot Corrigan, Allison Van der Molen and Clr Bev Turk, left the DA for the ANC.What I find interesting is the reason given by Turk when asked why she joined the ANC, she said “they have a good story to tell and have helped a lot of people over the last 20 years”. She mentioned how pensioners have benefited from housing development especially in Moffatview and yet in the eyes of de Freitas she was lazy and incompetent, what a contradiction.It would appear as though de Freitas is suffering from verbal diarrhoea by referring to Turk as rubbish, but we know that it is termed as freedom of speech in our country. Indeed the ANC has a story to tell and the story is not only about liberation struggle, it is about the struggle to unite the people of SA as one, to fight poverty and fund the way of creating jobs and improving education and health services. We should however acknowledge that the DA is the only party that has been growing in the past 20 years, but when the party starts to lose not only party members, but councillors as well, to the opposition party, we should ask questions about the future of such a party. This is the party that campaigned to conquer Gauteng, the most liberal and prosperous province in the country as well as the richest square mile on the African continent.In order for the DA to win Gauteng they need a charismatic and credible leader and I can not even remember who the DA leader in

Gauteng is. When dealing with characteristics, the difference between the DA and ANC is that in the ANC all public officials are equal and are comrades, even Parks Tau as the executive mayor is equal to the rest of ANC councillors in the council.In the DA, there are those who are bosses like de Freitas who addressed Turk like a worker who can be bossed around by a lousy member of parliament. This is the weakness the DA should work on if they want to improve the organisation.South Africa needs credible leaders while de Freitas is displaying the characteristics of a bad loser and we all know that politics is the game of numbers.I find it strange that de Freitas refers to the ANC as inherently corrupt. A few years ago members of parliament were found to have misused their credit cards with thousands of unauthorised expenditure as it was discovered that members of the ANC and those of the DA as well as other parties were involved.This was corruption at the highest level of administration. It was discovered that the DA kept the statue of Hendrick Vervoed, the architect of apartheid at the municipal offices of the Midvaal for 17 years after 1994. The DA should tell SA if they are truly committed to transformation which forms the critical element of our independence and democracy.We have equally a high level of white collar crime in the country which the DA is ignoring, and the question is why?

It’s been a long journey leading up to the May 7 elections which are now a week behind us. As a South African I think I share the sentiments of many which express that whatever the results of the ballot may be; the real winner on the day was our now 20 year old democracy. The election was however not the end of business, it was the beginning. Leading up to the election, many South Africans became sensitive to the issues around politics and the offerings of the various political parties and to me it makes absolute sense because of the efforts of the media to expose all the happenings and offerings to the people.The political sensitivity achieved over the past four months is something which I feel has to be grown on as the next government assumes the responsibility of leading the masses. It would be totally undermining the progress if we regressed into the same attitude; which at times could be interpreted as not caring. Before the beginnings of the electioneering processes, the average citizen was aware of the problems in communities but could never make the link between the government, its responsibility to the voters and their responsibilities to the government. What we are faced with today and moving on, is the beginnings of the future; a future which we will need to work towards. What we are basically faced with is a country on reset; the vote has not taken away the issues citizens were facing, it has allowed the citizen the opportunity to delegate their voices to the parties as they best represent their needs. The workings of democracy have proven not to be a function which can also be delegated wholly to the leaders. Citizens need to avail themselves to work and fulfilling of their responsibilities to the country.As we sit at home we have a responsibility, whether from a private business point right down to the youth who have the choice to be in class actually learning. We have come a long way, and we still have some strides to make, but if the involvement of the citizen during the voting, then we can wake up and hold our heads up high. The distance we have to cover, in no way affects the possibility. South Africa is still alive with possibilities.

Daar was ‘n groot sokkievloer waar al die fraai jong nooiens en dapper jong manne paaie gekruis het. Ek en Gysie het een aand daar ontmoet. Ek het nog altyd ‘n man wat kan skoffel baie aantreklik gevind. Gysie was ‘n skoffelmeester op die dansvloer en al die jong dames het tou gestaan om met Gysie te dans. Wanneer die trekklavier eers losgetrek het en die manne “balke toe” geroep het, dan het elke man vining arms geknoop met ‘n fraai jong nooi en begin skoffel van hoek tot hoek. Ek was nog nooit die beste danseres nie, maar Gysie het my vinnig touwys gemaak. Hy het my een aand net gegryp en oor die dansvloer begin swaai; hy het nie nee vir ‘n antwoord aanvaar nie. Ons het elke Vrydagaand, met my ma en pa se toestemming natuurlik, tot doer middernag by die skuur geskoffel- dat die stof sommer so uit die planke trek! Ons het ‘n kring vriende daar gemaak: ou Sarel Vogelman, Pieter Visagie, Koos van der Merwe en hulle meisies Juanita Rossouw, Griet Potgieter en Stienie Immelman, met wie ek vandag nog bevriend is. Hierdie Moedersdag het ‘n nostalgie en herinneringe by my opgewek wat ek vir altyd sal koester. Ek vertel my kleinkinders gedurig staaltjies en stories uit my kinderdae. Hulle wou Sondag sien of hulle ouma werklik so goed kan sokkie en toe ek my oë uitvee, het my skoonseun my van my stoel af en op die dansbaan. lene ecroignard, an ewasa (e-waste association of south africa) representative was the guest speaker at the Green Business Platform monthly meeting.e-Waste (electronic equipment) is one of the fastest growing organ-isation world-wide and contains a multitude of valuable and hazard-ous substances that must be recovered and responsibly recycled. According to the latest statistics South Africa produced around 6kg of e-waste per person in 2012. eWASA member companies recovered around 13% of the estimated e-waste generated, showing ample space for growth in recycling figures and highlighting the job creation potential in the sector.Ecroignard spoke about e-waste management, recycling and the eWASA/MINTEK urban mining project. This project focuses on de-veloping a mobile solution to e-waste management in the country with a focus on rural collection and recycling of e-waste.Ecroignard explained that the Swiss chose three developing coun-tries, South Africa, India and China in 2003 and conducted the first e-waste assessment and found the systems in SA to work and be-came part of the taskforce of concerned individuals leading to the establishment of eWASA.It was said that in seven years time landfills will not accept any e-waste and for this reason companies such as Pick n Pay and Makro have started their own collection points in store. This leads to the guiding principals: Responsibility- manufacturers/importers need to commit to the recycling of their products and ensure that the re-cycling solution operates smoothly; Simplicity- consumers, traders, manufacturers and recyclers must easily understand and implement e-waste; Reliability- crucial steps in the recycling chain require inde-pendent and trustworthy control and Liquidity- if the market value of recycled material can’t pay for the process, additional funds have to be introduced, such as the Advanced Recycling Fee(ARF) or Green Fee on new equipment that allows for their return of all goods free of charge in an environmentally responsible manner.Basically these Ewasa accredited companies receive the e-waste e.g. a computer and dismantle it and process it, taking out the mate-rials that can be re-used or recycled and find other uses for the mate-rials that don’t have value, for instance cell phone buttons are made into bracelets while fence droppers are made out of e-waste. This also solves the problem of theft of fence droppers as the e-waste ones have no value.Nicky Vakaloudis, CEO of SOJO, asked Ecroignard where could the members of SOJO (which are business) find out where they can dis-pose of their e-waste at a collection point knowing it is going to be recycled responsibility. Seven suspects, aged be-tween 18 and 34-years-old, were arrested on 5 May in Caro Road, Alan Manor for attempted theft of electric ca-ble about ±60 meters valued at ±R60 000.The suspects were apprehend-ed by Mondeor Sector 2 patrol-ler’s around 12:00 during the day. The suspects failed to produce proper documentation.The cable supplied electricity to the whole of the Mondeor, Alan Manor and Meredale areas.

Two children and one adult sustained mi-nor burn injuries when their bus caught alight on the M1 highway near Booysens on 3 May.ER24 paramedics responded to the scene to find the bus well ablaze. The occupants of the bus, being mothers and children, sat on the side of the road.Paramedics assessed the three patients, find-ing that they sustained minor burn injuries over their legs. After the patients were assessed and treated, they were transported by ambulance to a near-by hospital for further medical treatment. Provincial services were on scene to extin-guish the blaze.The driver of the bus later said that he heard a strange noise coming from the engine. Mo-ments later smoke could be seen coming from the engine.The exact cause of the incident is not yet known and local authorities were on scene for further investigations.

It is easy to become complacent about security within an office environment, particularly if your business is located in an office park where there are usually ac-cess guards or closed circuit television (CCTV). These security measures are certainly good deterrents but they are not guarantees that you will be safe from criminal activity. The best security system is one that com-bines different elements and this includes security measures employees and employ-ers can take themselves. Business owners should start with their perimeter security and work inwards. There are numerous op-tions for perimeter security including access control, walls, gates, electric fencing, beams and the likes. As your first line of defence, it’s essential that your perimeter security is in a good condition and checked regularly.If your business is not located in an office park a CCTV system with remote monitor-ing is something to consider. CCTV systems are becoming more affordable for small busi-nesses and cameras are an excellent deter-rent for criminals and, with remote monitoring now an option, small businesses don’t need to house a monitoring centre on the premis-es. Some form of controlled access is neces-sary. A locked security gate can provide you with a vital few minutes to evaluate a situa-tion before the suspects are actually in the premises. If you feel something is not right, don’t open the gate.Ideally two people should be tasked with locking up the business and ensuring the premises is secure at the end of the day. It is not advisable to withdraw large amounts of cash from the bank or keep large amounts of cash on the premises. Ensure you have a regular collection of your cash. Business owners should regularly brief their staff on security and ensure that everyone is making a conscious effort to keep their workplace safe. Equipping staff with panic buttons and access cards is another element

that needs to be addressed and monitored closely.Ensure that employees return keys, access codes and remotes to the property if they re-sign. It is also a good idea to change alarm and access codes from time to time.

SECuRITy TIPS FOR EMPLOyEES• It is safest not to make the assumption that all staff members are as honest as you are. Take care of your own personal belongings.• Don’t leave money, your handbag, wallet or any other personal belongings of value at your desk or in your coat when you step away from your desk. Keep your keys in a safe place and ensure that you do not leave any spare keys in your desk drawers.• Lock all windows in your absence and always lock your office whenever you leave it.• Don’t assume that the stranger wondering around the building is a member of staff. Either check with the building security or enquire as to whether they need assistance - this will often deter would-be criminals.• Don’t let anyone remove any office equipment without verifying that it is okay first.• Never leave a visitor alone in your office - if need be, call someone to attend to them.• Don’t disclose personal or confidential information regarding yourself, another staff member or the company to a stranger, no matter how important they might seem. Always report such request for information to your employer. • Report any broken or flickering lights, dimly lit corridors, doors that do not lock properly or any broken windows - don’t wait for someone else to do it.• Always let someone know where you will be - whether you are coming in late, working late, going out for lunch or going to a meeting outside of the office.

On Friday 2 May, the Cantare Children’s choir took the stage at the Ken Mackenzie Auditorium, on the Drakensberg Boys Choir School Campus. Their performance was part of the Music in the Mountains festival. The Cantare choir impressed and delighted the audience with the diversity and variety of their songs, which included a traditional African song, a song from a 1980’s film, a Katy Perry song, the beautiful Adiemus by Karl Jenkins and many more.Members of the choir doubled as percussionists, and three young ladies performed a beautiful ballet to “Walking in the air”. The choir, directed by Ida Strydom, has won many international awards and has proved themselves to be on par with the best in the world. They shared the stage with other top South African artists like soprano Zanne Stapelberg, The Drakensberg boys

choir, classical guitarist James Grace, and the Jacaranda youth choir. The Cantare choir also has an outreach program in place and sponsors many young choristers from previously disadvantaged communities. These choristers were part of the Drakensberg tour and enjoyed themselves very much. “It was such fun performing in a beautiful place, and seeing the mountains” said one young soprano. The Cantare choir would like to thank their sponsors: Nu-Pay, Elite Chemicals, Promiflash t/a Bateleur, Y Venter, S Klynsmith.

Mondeor Community School Grade 0/R held their own elections on 6 May to help the children understand the concept of what would be happening in the whole country the following day. The morning started with meeting the candidates in the form of three chocolate bars. The chocolate bars were introduced to the children and they all got a chance to taste each one in order for them to choose their favourite.They each had to make their own ID book and draw their own photo. The elections began, of course there had to be a long queue to wait in. Each child had to

show their ID book at the door and get their thumbs marked.They each got a ballot paper showing the three ‘candidates’ and proceeded to the voting booth. In the voting booth they got to make a cross in the box next to their favourite chocolate bar, they proceeded to the ballot box to pop their vote into the box. At the end of the whole process, the votes were counted and the winner declared. Kit Kat was voted the favourite chocolate.Janine Hall, the principal of Mondeor Community School said, “The children had a wonderful time and left school with a clearer understanding of what an election is

all about.”

Ford sales remained robust during April while the market softened amidst fewer selling days and tougher market conditions.April sales are notoriously anomalous due to the spate of public holidays. “This year’s impact was greater than usual as more holidays fell within April compared with last year providing only 19 selling days (excluding Saturdays) in the month,” said FMCSA’s Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service, Mark Kaufman.Ford sales continued to prosper despite the market conditions, growing 7% year-on-year. The South African new vehicle market ended April with 46 065 units sold (including AMH). This was 9 298 fewer units compared with March and10,5% lower than April of last year.Improved supply of EcoSport virtually doubled the popular SUV’s volumes during April over the previous month. With 559 units sold, the EcoSport was firmly top of its segment. Consistent demand for the Ford line-up saw Ranger, Kuga and Fiesta holding second position in their respective segments. Discounting the taxi business, Transit was the best-selling van.Ford market share continued its double-digit performance for the tenth consecutive month, achieving the brand’s highest share this year at 11,9%. Kaufman further commented, “Consumers continue to be attracted to the technology and design of our new vehicles, especially the

EcoBoost engine family.”According to the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), passenger car sales accounted for 30 882 units, 10, 5% down year-on-year. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) were further down 11, 5% year-on-year to 12 801 after being up 3, 7% last month.“While April sales cannot be taken as indicative, they certainly reaffirm that trading conditions are tougher,” said Kaufman. “Year-to-date sales are now down 5% over the same period last year, albeit indicators point toward slightly improving consumer confidence.”Kaufman refers to recovering strength in the Rand with less volatility reducing risk of further prime rate increases and lower fuel prices in May

Sonja Laxton completed her 81st Spar Women’s Challenge in Port Elizabeth on 3 May in a time of 57.12 minutes. It was not her best time, but for fans of the runner who has more than 70 national titles to her name, it was a time to celebrate. On November 17 last year, Laxton was hit by a car during a training run. She suffered multiple fractures, including shoulders, elbows, ribs, ankle and spine, and spent some time in intensive care at the Milpark Hospital. Many thought she would never be able to run again, but Sonja’s indomitable spirit saw her back on the road in less than six months.“It came as a surprise to me when I heard she was running,” said her husband, Ian, who is the manager of the Spar Grand Prix.“We’d been on holiday in the Eastern Cape, and Sonja must have hidden her RAC clothes at the bottom of her suitcase, because we arrived in Port Elizabeth and she told me she was going to run.”Despite a swollen ankle and a still painful shoulder, Laxton was the third grandmaster to finish, well ahead of the 70 minutes Ian had predicted.Her daughter Kim finished in 16th place, in 36.13 minutes, and immediately made her way back to find her mother and escort her to the finish line.“I’m so proud of Sonja,” said Ian. “And the time she did is amazing, when you remember how badly she was injured.”

After successfully hosting the SA Mountain bike Cross Country and Downhill Cup in 2013, Thaba Trails MTB Park, based in Southern Johannesburg, will play host to the Prestigeous SA Mountain Bike Cross Country and Downhill Championships. The 2014 South African XCO Championships take place on 19 July and the exciting downhill SA Champs on 20 July.Mountain biking is growing at such a rate that it is becoming more difficult to choose which event will best suit you. In the Marathon discipline- the Cape Epic is the challenge for many riders. This multi stage hi-profile multi-stage race

draws riders from all over the world and as teams of two this has become the event on competitive riders annual to do list. Many of the top International XCO riders who come for the Epic use this event as their big mileage and high intensity training for the Olympic discipline of Cross-Country (XCO).It is often said by riders that if you can ride Thaba Trails, you can ride anything.
