Captain’s Report May 2012
May Game – Abu Dhabi Golf Club – The National Course – Friday 04 May 2012
Another very well organised and enjoyable Jiggers game was held at the Abu Dhabi National on Friday 04 May 2012. Thanks to our Vice Captain, Kelvin Tayfield, for standing in for me for the day. Unfortunately I was incapacitated due an injury to my arm which I would like to blame on the weight of my wife’s luggage whilst travelling on holiday but is more likely down to wear and tear after many years of bending the old elbow with a bottle of brown amber liquid in hand!
Thanks to Kevin Hudson for all the effort he put into organising this event. Again the notice was out well in advance and Kevin also ensured a good working relationship with the Club by visiting and discussing the procedure for the day – special check in counter, ease of ordering lunch, and a separate venue for prize giving and after match abuse! Kevin also emailed the club expressing our thanks for their organisation on the day. This will only hold our Society in good stead when it comes to organising our games roster next year. As you know it is becoming more difficult to secure weekend group bookings as the courses become busier and I would recommend that all organisers follow this approach of dealing with the clubs.
The course was in immaculate condition and, judging by the great scoring, was enjoyed by most of the guys. Suddenly 40 individual points didn’t even get a look in – no doubt our esteemed handicapper will work his magic to even out the playing field!!
We had 27 players (after another no show by one of our guests) including 20 Jiggers and 7 Guests - another good showing. Unfortunately one of our guests did not get the draw and notice of play. Please can each member who invites a guest take responsibility for ensuring they get notified in terms of the draw sheet as the organiser will ordinarily not have them on the email contact list. (By 1:00 pm on the day, I received notification that the club had charged my credit card for the green fees for the no show – so you can see they have become increasingly strict on this.) Please will all organisers make sure they use the most up to date Jiggers email list as well.
Welcome to our 7 Guests: -
• Scott Griffiths
• Richard Harris
• Arne Bergh
• Andrew Fish
• Mark Barr
• Simon Elliott
• David Maxwell
The Fines Master (for those of you who haven’t seen him for so long and didn’t recognise him – his name is Erik Dekker) did a great job in extracting a good number of Falcons from Jiggers’ wallets and the year end party fund is already looking in good shape.
Our new handicapper has again raised a few issues subsequent to the game – two guys played off incorrect handicaps (fines master will be notified for the next game) and also the quality and accuracy of the scorecards is still not up to the mark. Speaking from experience – the handicapping
and scoring responsibility is a fairly time consuming and onerous task – we all need to take responsibility to make our handicappers job that much easier.
An update on the Chairman’s much loved new 5 wood. It was found in the Emirates lost property box – but only after a personal investigation after he was reliably informed that no such piece of equipment had, in fact, been handed in. We can only assume, given the glowing and rapturous way in which the Chairman described his lost property that the poor person in charge assumed he had lost his wife and not his club!
Prize Winners
• Individual Stableford (open to Jiggers members only)
Rob Edgecombe 43 points
Peter Hedley 41 points
There were 5 other scores of 36 points and above – great scoring guys!
• Betterball Stableford
Rob Edgecombe and Arne Bergh 49 points
Craig Strydom and Peter Hedley 45 points
Ant Milne and Paul Webb-Jones 44 points
Another 4 pairs with 40 points and above!
• Individual Shotmakers
Nearest the Pin 0 – 14 handicaps Bill Collins (26 ft 11 inches) (We know our ex Skipper stands tall in the shower but this is the distance of the ball from the hole!)
Nearest the Pin 15 – 28 handicaps Charles Arnestad (20 ft 10 inches)
Longest Drive 0 – 14 handicaps Bruce Penn
Longest Drive 15 – 28 handicaps Paul Webb-Jones
A siren was heard signalling a stewards enquiry into the days scoring however nothing untoward was found – over to our handicapper to bring some sense and sensibility to the handicaps!
Matchplay
A number of matchplay games were played:
Player 1 Player 2 Score
Rob Edgecombe beat Kelvin Tayfield 6 & 4
Bill Collins beat Craig Strydom 4 & 3
Next Game
Friday 1st June at the Dubai Creek and Yacht Club
Confirmed tee times for 32 players
Green Fee: AED280
Organizer: Mike Berry
Fines Master: Doc Jones
Please note this game is being held on the 1st Friday of the month and not the usual 2nd Friday. This is because the Dubai Creek is commencing their major seasonal maintenance work on the course the week after we play.
Membership
Please note updated membership sheet attached – changes highlighted in red. Take note especially of changes in email ID’s. Highlighted in Red.
Another reminder for any of you who wish to propose any new members for future consideration – please let me know and make sure they get invited to play from time to time.
MatchPlay
Please make sure you try and keep up to date with the matchplays so that we avoid any pressure come the end of the year. There are a number of outstanding matchplays which need some urgent attention please. You can arrange to play these outside of Jiggers games as well if you cannot make the June game.
Trophies
Please could all trophy holders bring them to the next Jiggers game. We want to update some of the trophies and would like to assess the existing ones we have in play if you don’t mind parting with them for a short while.
Optimal Fitness Golf Academy
For those of you who wish to have a good technical analyses done of your swing, Glynn Meredith from the Golf Academy at Optimal Fitness in Studio City offers a special rate for members of Golf Societies – so if any of you wish to see your swing in slow-mo alongside Rory’s I suggest you mention your membership of Jiggers when you go along. He has some pretty state of the art equipment and can be contacted on 055 2756234 or [email protected]
